Coming into the freshman year at Paul College, Sansa was concerned about her ability as an individual to make an impact on such a large community, for it was never hard for her to stand out from peers in high school. Luckily, each first-year student in Paul College takes part in what is called the First-year Innovation and Research Experience, commonly referred to as the FIRE Program, an extracurricular project assigned by the institution. She was able to forge invaluable connections with her fellow students and their peer adviser who had so much first-hand experience with what they all were going through.
The biggest highlight of her freshman year was working alongside her FIRE team on a Grand Challenge Project, in which every FIRE. team competed against one another in the Undergraduate Research Conference. Each team had to create a unique product that tackled one of the five following real-world problems: “Water is Life”, “Food”, “Threats from Cyberspace”, “Medical Breakthroughs”, and “Addictive Society”. Her team addressed the growing issue of “Addictive Society”. Doing research, collecting facts and organizing discussions or even debates were a huge amount of work before they went to vie with other teams.
After weeks of tireless preparation, their collective efforts bore fruit at the Undergraduate Research Conference. They earned a spot in the final round of the conference, where they competed against the top team from each of the other Grand Challenge groups. They were so overcome with pride when they were finally announced as the overall first-place team at the college!
If it hadn’t been for her group’s determination, excellent teamwork and their awesome peer adviser Hayley, they would not have been able to accomplish everything they did. This experience would be instrumental in her future.

A soundly sleeping brain monitors its surroundings. It also can respond to them without waking, a new study finds. For instance, even in a short sleep during the daytime, a person’s brain can sort words correctly into different categories. This is not the first study to show that the sleeping mind can do useful work. Two years ago, researchers in Israel showed the sleeping brain can learn.
Sid Kouider of the National Center for Scientific Research(CNRS)in Paris, led the new study. His team recorded brain signals from people—all wide awake—as they classified spoken words as either animals or objects. To do that, the participants would push a button with their right hand when they heard an animal name. Then they’d use their left hand to push a different button when the word represented some other type of object.
As each volunteer responded, the researchers tracked their brain activity. They did this by measuring the participants’ brain waves. Such recordings are known as EEGs, a record of electrical activity in the brain. And those EEGs showed that when an individual was about to hit the right button, the brain responded differently than when it was going to hit the left button.
Then each participant nodded off. The researchers again made EEGs recording brain activity. As this happened, the researchers played recordings of a different set of words. These showed that the volunteers’ brains continued sorting the words into their proper categories. When a sleeper heard “horse”, the EEGs looked as if that person was preparing to hit a button with her or his right hand, not the left. Kouider’s team reported its findings in Current Biology.
The new data demonstrate one way in which the brain monitors the outside world during sleep. Those results also may help explain why meaningful sounds, such as a baby crying, a spoken name or a siren(警报器)warning, may more easily wake someone than other sounds do.
28.What does the new study find about a sleeping brain
A.It can help people to learn. B.It can send signals to people.
C.It can respond to the surroundings. D.It can record sounds autonomously.
29.What were the participants asked to do in the study
A.Track their brain activities in person.
B.Take part in the whole test while sleeping.
C.Repeat the words following the researchers.
D.Identify different words by pushing two buttons.
30.Which is less likely to awake people
A.Electric current sounds. B.People’s names.
C.Babies’ crying sounds. D.Alerting signals.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.Brains React to Word Types B.Sleeping Brains Are Listening
C.Meaningful Sounds Do Count D.Words Are Sorted in Sound Sleep

Jenny, 18, suffering from coughing and speechlessness, came to Sigmund Freud. She’d become depressed, even having no desire to live. During one session, as he tried to help her uncover the source of her sickness, Freud observed Jenny toying with a small handbag. Interpreting the act as an expression of controlled desire, Freud concluded, “No people can keep a secret. If his lips are silent, he chatters with his finger-tips; the details reveal everything.”
Sometimes a handbag is just a handbag, but modern research does support the idea that secrecy can be a source of mental and physical sadness. Keeping a secret requires constant effort. In one recent study, subjects asked to hide their sexual orientation performed worse on a spatial ability task, reacted more rudely to criticism, and gave up sooner in a test of handgrip endurance(握力耐力). And the bigger the secret, the harder it is to keep. Another study found that subjects asked to recall a meaningful secret believed hills to be more dangerous and distances to be longer than those asked to recall a small secret. When researchers asked to help move books from their lab, the subjects harboring meaningful secrets lifted fewer piles.
Research shows an association between keeping a meaningful secret and illness ranging from the common cold to chronic(慢性的)diseases. It concludes that teens who open their mind to a parent or close friend report fewer physical complaints and less bad behavior, loneliness, and depression than those who sit on their secrets. One reason why secret keeping is such hard work is that secrets, like unwanted thoughts, tend to take up more brain space.
Researchers have identified a small class of “repressors”, who experience fewer intrusive (妨碍的)thoughts about sensitive information they are controlling: They may keep their secrets so tightly wrapped that they manage to hide them even from themselves.
32.What is Paragraph One aimed at
A.Providing an example of depression.
B.Showing us how Freud treated Jenny.
C.Introducing the topic of secret-keeping.
D.Presenting the importance of observing patients.
33.What can we infer from the second paragraph
A.Those keeping secrets didn’t need constant effort.
B.Keeping secrets can only cause mental discomfort.
C.Keeping a big secret is more challenging than a smaller one.
D.Subjects were asked to keep their sexual orientation secret.
34.What can be concluded about teenagers who tell their secrets to parents
A.They react more rudely to criticism.
B.Their immune systems are enhanced.
C.They have less physical and emotional trouble.
D.They don’t hide any secrets from themselves.
35.What does the underlined word “repressors” in the last paragraph refer to
A.People who often open their mind to families or friends.
B.People who keep secrets so well as if they didn’t exist.
C.People who are easily influenced by unwanted thoughts.
D.People who are sensitive to the information they are keeping.

High-hope people are optimistic about their future and they believe in possibilities. They see challenges as opportunities to grow and learn, rather than as obstacles(障碍). Here’s a tip sheet to get you into the habit of hope.
Goal-setting is as important as the action you take toward achieving your goals. 36 They know that without a clear goal, it’s easy to get distracted and lose focus. Meanwhile, they don’t let life happen to them. Instead, they actively make decisions and take action to move forward in their lives. They usually visualize their goals and create conditions that set them up for success.
Being around positive people is one way to keep an optimistic mind. Hopeful people tend to spend more time associating with those who share a bright attitude. 37 People high in hope don’t block themselves from folks who have a more pessimistic viewpoint. They know that seeing different perspectives allows them to be realistic.
Hopeful people are always grateful for what they have. 38 They recognize that even though they may not have everything they want, they’re still lucky to have so much good in life, thus making them focus more on what’s in front of them.
39 When it comes to high-hope people, no matter what life throws at them, they try to see the silver lining. They don’t let the circumstance define their emotional response. In addition to having a positive outlook, high-hope people are also creative problem-solvers. When faced with a challenge, they don’t give up easily. 40
A.People high in hope do both.
B.Keeping a positive outlook is also important.
C.Another trick is sticking with positive people.
D.This allows them to stay positive and take urgent action.
E.That keeps them appreciative and grounded in the moment.
F.Instead, they find solutions that help them overcome the obstacles in their way.
