When it comes to ocean, its pollution is becoming more and more serious. World Ocean Day, falling on June 8th, is aimed at raising awareness of ocean conservation.
Ocean plays a key role in our world. Not only does ocean offer us sufficient food, but also it maintains the balance of nature. Thus, it is imperative to protect ocean. First of all, what we can do is to place importance on our daily actions. For example, garbage can’t be thrown into ocean. What’s more, we can also hand out leaflets to call on more people to protect the ocean. The more people are involved, the better the ocean environment is.

World Ocean Day is celebrated every 8 June as a reminder of how integral our seas are to life on Earth.
The day is an opportunity to raise global awareness of the benefits humans get from the ocean and our individual and collective duty to use its resources sustainably.It is also a chance to celebrate and appreciate what the ocean provides, from the oxygen we breathe to the inspiration it provides artists.
The world marks the 14th World Oceans Day on Wednesday, which aims to raise awareness about the significance of oceans to the survival and development of humanity.
This year marks the 31st anniversary of World Ocean Day, a day of action that supports the implementation of worldwide sustainable development goals, while aiming to foster public interest in the protection of the ocean and sustainable management of its resources.

ABOUT WORLD OCEANS DAY
Did you know that 44% of the world's population lives within 150 kilometers of the ocean That is over 3 billion people in 148 countries around the world. Even those who do not live near the ocean play a critical role in the health and well-being of this truly global resource.
To mark the importance of the oceans and the resources they provide, the United Nations General Assembly has recognized June 8 each year as “World Oceans Day.” The goal of the day is to encourage everyone to learn more about the oceans, take an active role in protecting the world's oceans, and celebrate the many ways the oceans support us all.
This June 8, be sure to “wear blue and tell two.” Wear blue to show your support for protecting the world's oceans, and tell two of your family or friends to join you in celebrating World Oceans Day.

Why does World Ocean Day matter
Oceans cover more than 70% of the planet, produce at least 50% of the world's oxygen, are home to most of the Earth's biodiversity (生物多样性) and are the main source of protein for more than a billion people.
They also absorb about 30% of carbon dioxide produced by humans - a buffer for the detrimental (有害的) impacts of global warming.
A new YouGov survey of 1,696 adults has found that almost three-quarters (73%) of people in the UK say ocean wildlife needs more protection
The UN hopes World Ocean Day will help inform the public of human actions on the ocean and develop a worldwide movement to protect it and unite the world in sustainably managing the oceans.

The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface. It produces at least half of the planet’s oxygen and absorbs around 30% of the carbon dioxide produced by humans. The sea is home to most of our biodiversity and 3 billion people globally rely on this for their livelihoods, according to the United Nations. The UN says around 200 million people are employed either directly or indirectly in related industries.
Carbon emissions(碳排放) from human activity are causing ocean warming, acidification and oxygen loss. Coastal waters are deteriorating due to pollution and eutrophication which causes harmful algae blooms. With 90% of big fish populations depleted and half of all coral reefs destroyed, more is being taken from the sea than can be replenished.
World Ocean Day goals
This year’s event on 8 June continues to raise awareness and support the goal of safeguarding at least a third of the ocean through a network of highly protected areas by 2030.
World Ocean Day also builds on two recent victories – a High Seas Treaty agreement to protect the world's biodiversity in international waters, and a commitment from global leaders to 30x30, conserving 30% of our lands, water and ocean by 2030.
World Ocean Day has also created a “how-to guide” making it easier for participants to advance the 30x30 movement. It includes lesson plans for children, printable posters and banners, and merchandise for volunteers. Numerous events are planned worldwide, from beach clean-ups to special screenings and exhibitions.
The Youth Advisory Council, with 26 members from 23 countries, provides ideas and recommendations for ocean and climate conservation throughout the year. Young people are vital to the future of the movement and the planet, and this year, World Oceans Day is encouraging coordinators, participants and supporters to share why they are supporting the initiatives.
“To me, celebrating World Oceans Day means celebrating all the efforts that are made by individuals worldwide,” said Rada Pandeva, Youth Advisory Council member from Bulgaria, age 20. “It is a chance to recognize the progress we are making and to remind ourselves to keep going because our own wellbeing is dependent on our ocean’s wellbeing.”

This day’s significance is to celebrate the oceans, bring awareness to the increasing pollution in the oceans, take measures to preserve the marine life underwater, keep the beaches clean, and be happy looking at the vast blue waters as far as one can see.

Activities to Celebrate World Oceans Day
1. Skipper Your Crew to a World Oceans Day Event
Check out World Ocean Day’s website to find out what events are going on in your area. You can also list your own events and learn more about youth initiatives. From art contests to film festivals to hands-on exhibits, there are ocean activities taking place around the world and students can discover a whole community of passionate youth working to protect our oceans for future generations.
2. “Fish are Friends, Not Food”
Who doesn’t love battered or crumbed fish, juicy mussels, moreish shrimp, and the versatility of tuna Did you know that the oceans are the main source of protein for a billion people around the world That puts enormous pressure on fish stocks, the majority of which are overfished and in their populations in decline.
While this can all sound pretty depressing, you can teach students how to make informed decisions as consumers and teach their families how to be ocean warriors using their wallets at stores and restaurants. Discover which fish are the most eco-friendly to buy and consume. You can then do this worksheet on ocean zones so students know where the fish they buy is coming from.
3. Say No to Plastic
Plastics are one of the biggest threats to ocean health and one of the easiest things to change from a lifestyle perspective. Each year, trillions of pieces of plastic enter the world’s river systems and water ways and end up in the oceans. They slowly gather into gyres, some of which are bigger than the state of Texas.
Plastics in the oceans aren’t just a hazard to its inhabitants that eat it or get tangled up in it, but they break down into micro-plastics which then enter the food chain and we humans end up eating!
This year, teach your students about the impact of single-use plastics, like drinking straws and packaging, and the importance of recycling and responsibly disposing plastic. When done, you can then organize a beach clean up. If the ocean is too far away from you, remember, plastics can travel for hundreds of miles before entering the oceans, so even a plastic clean-up along rivers, streams, or your community will benefit the oceans.
4. Ocean Explorers
It’s much easier to protect something when you’ve got a connection to it. Google has an amazing feature called Google Ocean in which you can explore the vast waters much like street view has changed the way we explore areas of land. Discover images, locations, and other media with this this stunning collection.
If you’re able to, set your bearings to your local aquarium. Students of all ages will enjoy viewing and interacting with the amazing variety of sea life on display.
5.Action Starts with Awareness
Ahoy! Teachers, students, and families can join an Ocean Guardian Program and plan a school or community conservation project, submit ocean-themed artwork, stories, or poetry, and even become involved in diving!
6. A Good Day for the Beach
Head to the beach! What better way to celebrate World Oceans Day then by digging in the sand, discovering tide pools, and surfing the waves It’s a perfect opportunity for students to explore the environment while also teaching them the importance of not interferring with the local ecosystem by removing shells, catching small creatures, or turning over rocks.
7.There’s No Place Like Home
Movies like Finding Nemo《海底总动员》 are often box-office hits and seen by millions of people around the world. Unfortunately, while creating awareness, it can also increase the demand for the creatures featured in the films. Without careful research, would-be hobbyists can end up fuelling the illegal capture and trade of wildlife or products such as shells and coral, or worse yet, killing creatures through lack of knowledge.
Marine creatures belong in their natural environment and should only be kept by experts. Rather than buy marine creatures for enjoyment at home, visit a local aquarium (水族馆) that’s contributing to research and protection.
