M: Good memories can help us get through some difficult times in life. But according to scientists, many of our most prized memories may never have actually happened.
The researchers asked 1,600 students whether they had experienced a false memory. A fifth in the study said they had experienced “fictional” memories, mostly dating back to when they were four to eight years old. The finding reveals once again the inaccuracy of memory and explains why two people can have such different memories of the same event.
One volunteer claimed she had experienced vivid memories of being a hockey player, even though her parents confirmed she had never played hockey in her life. Another volunteer called Jennifer Brown claimed to have remembered seeing a living dinosaur. In many cases, people continued to have memories of events after their parents had told them they could not have happened.
“Such ‘fictional’ memories provide us with a sense of identity and they are usually accurate enough to help us negotiate our lives,” said researcher Giuliana Mazzoni.
Psychologist Jean Piaget vividly remembered being bullied in a park at the age of two, while being out with his nurse Patricia Hardie. He even had memories of the scratches on his nurse’s face. But 13 years later the nurse said that the story was made up.2024年3月

Recently, my college degree has just been completed. The last project was called “Smile”. The class was asked to go out to smile at three people and write down their reactions. I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway. So, I thought this would be a piece of cake.
My husband, the youngest son and I went out to McDonald’s. We were standing in line when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away. As I turned around, an unpleasant body smell came to my nose and two poor homeless men stood just behind me. As I looked at the short blue-eyed gentleman closest to me, he was “smiling”. The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend.
The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said, “Coffee is all, Miss,” because that was all they could afford.
Then I really felt it—I embraced the little man with the blue eyes. That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action. I smiled and asked two more breakfast meals and gave them to the men.
The blue-eyed gentleman looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Thank you.”
I turned in my project. My teacher asked, “Can I share this ” I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class. She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human beings share this need to make people happy and to be made happy.
In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald’s and every soul that heard the story in the classroom. But, I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn.

Wildlife populations around the world are facing dramatic declines, according to new figures that have led environmental campaigners to call for urgent action to rescue the natural world. The 2022 Living Planet Index(LPI), produced by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), reveals that studied populations of mammals, birds, reptiles (爬行动物) and fish have seen an average decline of 69 per cent since 1970, faster than previous predictions. The LPI tracked global biodiversity between 1970 and 2018, based on the monitoring of 31,821 populations of 5230 vertebrate (脊椎动物) species. Mark Wright of WWF says the degree of decline is destructive and continues to worsen. “We are not seeing any really positive signs that we are beginning to bend the curve of nature,” he says.
Freshwater vertebrates have been among the hardest-hit populations, with monitored populations showing an average decline of 83 per cent since 1970. The Amazon pink river dolphin, for example, has experienced a 65 per cent decline in its population between 1994 and 2016. Habitat loss and reduction is the largest driver of wildlife loss in all regions around the world.
In December, governments from around the world will gather in Montreal, Canada, for the COP15 Biodiversity Framework to agree on a set of new targets intended to prevent the loss of animals, plants and habitats globally by 2030. Robin, Freeman of ZSL, says “We need governments to take action to ensure that those goals deal with the complicated combined threats of climate change and biodiversity” says Freeman. But some researchers are critical of the LPI’s use of a headline figure of decline, warning it is easy to be misunderstood.
The findings don’t mean all species or populations worldwide are in decline. In fact, roughly half the populations show a stable or increasing trend, and half show a declining trend. “I think a more appropriate and useful way to look at it is to focus on specific species or populations,” says Hannah Ritchie. But Wright says the LPI is a useful tool that reflects the findings of other biodiversity indicators. “All of those show they all scream there is something going really very badly wrong,” says Wright.
What does Mark Wright mean in the first paragraph
A.It is no use trying to change nature.
B.The benefits of nature are underestimated.
C.It takes more to preserve the diversity of nature.
D.Measures of protecting nature are highly effective.
29.Why the Amazon pink river dolphin is mentioned in paragraph 2
A.To show the number of Amazon dolphins is on the rise.
B.To show some of the world’s wild animals are in decline.
C.To show there are no positive measures to protect nature.
D.To show freshwater vertebrates are at risk of extinction.
30.What can we learn about people’s response to the issue mentioned in the passage
A.It makes sense to focus on a particular species.
B.Preventing the loss of habitats by 2030 is certain to happen.
C.New agreement on the prevention of habitat loss will be in vain.
D.The Caribbean wildlife has been well protected in recent decades.
31.Which of the following is the best title of the passage
A.The COP15 Biodiversity Framework. B.Urgent Action to Save the Earth.
C.Wildlife Population Declining Sharply. D.Correct Explanation of LPI.
D
“Regrets are often painful. A study suggests that some people can overcome them,” said Jiawei Zhang, a psychology graduate at the University of California. “But this isn’t the case for everyone, ” he said.
The researchers wondered why some people report feeling improvement from regrets but others don’t. Does it lie in how people approach their regrets
In the study, the researchers focused on self-compassion(自我同情) as a potential factor in why some people have an easier time leaving their regrets behind them.
400 people attended an experiment. First, they were asked to write about their biggest regret. Half wrote something they did but wish they hadn’t done; the other half wrote something they didn’t do but wish they had. Then, the participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups:self-compassion,self-esteem and a control group. The self-esteem group was asked to respond by “talking to yourself about this regret from the aspect of confirming your positive qualities”.
The control group was asked to write about their favorite hobby rather than their regret. Then, they were asked about their feelings of forgiveness, acceptance and personal improvement following the exercise.
They found that the self-compassion group reported greater feelings of acceptance, forgiveness and personal improvement, compared with the control group and the self-esteem group. In other words, focusing on your best qualities is not what helps you feel better about a regret. Rather, being compassionate toward yourself is what may make a difference, the researchers found.
It’s possible that people who practice self-compassion are able to confront their regrets and see what went wrong, so they can make a better choice in the future, Zhang told Live Science. Self-compassion pushes people to accept their regret instead of running away from it.
The researchers used an example of this from a previous study on breast cancer patients who were asked to try thinking about their treatment in a positive light before it began. The women who did so reported greater feelings of personal growth later on.
32.What does the underlined word “confront” in Paragraph 7 mean
A.Handle. B.Forget.
C.Ignore. D.Show.
33.What were the students in the self-esteem group asked to do
A.Think of a way out.
B.Write about their regrets.
C.Record their favorite hobbies.
D.Treat their regrets in positive ways.
34.Why were the participants asked about their good qualities
A.To cover up their regrets.
B.To see if they have weaknesses.
C.To see if they have self-compassion.
D.To help them feel better about their regrets.
35.What was the aim of mentioning the researchers’ study on breast cancer patients
A.To show the method of the research.
B.To show the value of the acceptance.
C.To show the truth of people’s feeling.
D.To show the difficulty of the research.

Learning how to apologize is similar to learning any new behavior. It may feel awkward and may not be polished at first. 36 There are several tips that will help you as you learn how to apologize.
First of all, wait until the right time and you are in the right place. Although public apology is often appropriate, discretion (谨慎) should be used. 37 Remember, you will be raising a topic that may recall a bad experience or bad feelings. Be respectful as you approach this task.
Be direct and brief in your approach. Acknowledge the fact that injury has occurred and then take responsibility for what happened. Be sincere in expressing your regret and demonstrate your willingness to take ownership of the situation. 38
Even if you follow these steps, be prepared for rejection. Sometimes, the person apologizing has an expectation that the apology will lead to immediate forgiveness and acceptance. 39 If you think of the offense as an emotional bruise, think of the healing process as the color changes we see as a bruise heals.
40 Knowing when to keep one’s mouth shut is a virtue. Keeping quiet may be very difficult, as post-apology listening is not easy. We may hear unpleasant observations from another about our own shortcomings. We may hear the expression of anger. One of the ways we let others know we are truly responsible and accountable for our mistakes is by listening to the other party pour out the feelings associated with our actions.
A.Forgiveness and acceptance may take time.
B.To give or receive a good apology is an art.
C.But with practice, everyone can learn to do it.
D.Listening to the response to our apologies is important.
E.Most apologies can and should happen in a private setting.
F.In other words, avoid excuses and offer to repair the damage.
G.Taking responsibility doesn’t mean accepting blame for everything.

Alex sat quietly at the back of his Chinese class, his eyes fixed on the textbook before him. As a shy and unnoticed student, he felt like a lone wolf, struggling against the complexities of high school life. Ms Lau, his Chinese teacher, was a light in his otherwise dark world. Her warm smile and gentle behavior made her stand out among the sea of teachers. She was the only one who seemed to understand his conservative nature, always encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone.
One day, after class, Ms Lau approached Alex with excitement shining in her eyes. “Alex, I have an offer for you,” she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm. “I am organizing a cultural exchange program to China, and I believe it would be a great opportunity for you to explore a new world.”
Alex’s heart skipped a beat, the prospect of traveling to a foreign country both exciting and terrifying. He hesitated, unsure if he had the courage to start such an adventure. But Ms Lau’s firm belief in him gave him the push he needed to take a leap of faith.
Under Ms Lau’s guidance, Alex began preparing for the trip. He got really interested in Chinese culture and learned about its long history and traditions. Ms Lau became his mentor(导师), teaching him not only the language but also invaluable life lessons. She taught him the importance of being confident and not giving up, reminding him that growth only happens outside one’s comfort zone.
The day of departure arrived, and Alex found himself on a plane headed for China. He couldn’t help but feel amazed as he stepped off the plane and into a world so different from his own. The busy streets, bright colors, and unfamiliar sounds flooded his senses. Yet, Ms Lau’s comforting presence by his side provided him with the strength to face the unknown.
