When I was a kid, my siblings (兄弟姐妹) and I used to have ice cream for dessert. Every day, we would choose which ice cream flavor to have, whether to eat it in a cone or a bowl. Then we would happily wolf down our treat (款待) as fast as we could.
Once, though, when I was probably about 10 or 11, our grandpa came to visit us. Grandpa always had a unique view on things. On this particular occasion, my sister and I were making bets as to who could finish our ice cream first. With a smile, Grandpa said, “Why would you want to finish first If you eat slowly, it will last longer. You should have a competition to see who can finish last.” Even now, I always try to taste my ice cream, but of course this is about more than just dessert.
Too often, kids want to scramble (争夺) for more, whether it’s more ice cream, more toys, or more friends. This habit persists into our adult years, and we end up constantly scrambling for more. We never develop the skill of appreciating what we have. If we learn to recognize this pattern and change it, we can raise our kids a little differently, giving them the tool of tasting their widely known dessert, which could lead to a happier life for them.
What my grandpa taught me that day was really that if you take the opportunity to enjoy what’s in front of you, the pleasure will last longer and be more rewarding than if you rush through life always trying to get the next treat. It’s a lesson that, I think, has made my adult life happier, as well. These days, when I want something, I wait as long as I can before I allow myself to have it. Then, when I finally get it, I make sure to treasure it as long as possible, because I know that, no matter what it is, it will be gone all too soon.
24. The author’s grandfather advised her sister and her to_______.
A. stop eating ice cream B. learn something from their way of eating
C. stop the competition between them D. eat ice cream as slowly as possible
25. Which of the following best describes the author’s grandfather

26. What advice does the author give us in the passage
A. Value what you have. B. Keep longing for more.
C. Have a balanced diet. D. Save for the future.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The author benefits a lot from her grandfather’s advice.
B. The author doesn’t like ice cream as much as before.
C. The author just starts to understand her grandfather.
D. The author longs for the days when they ate ice cream.
C
There’s been lots of concern recently about the potential dangers of microwave popcorn (爆米花), but is this concern founded, or just overmuch fear-spreading The answer is that many of the chemicals that caused worry in earlier decades have been removed from microwave popcorn, but some critics still are not satisfied.
“You may consider popcorn to be a low-calorie, high-fiber snack, but microwave popcorn isn’t a healthy choice,” explains nutrition expert Dan DeFigio. That’s because microwave popcorn bags were coated with perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) to prevent oil substance from leaking out. One particular type of PFC, known as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), has been linked to certain cancers, but the American Cancer Society says the evidence is unsure and more research is being done about this.
Nevertheless, in response to concerns about PFCs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) worked with popcorn makers back in 2011 to remove PFOA from their packaging. Three more PFCs were banned in the next five years. So today’s microwave popcorn doesn’t have these chemicals, but critics say that the alternatives could cause problems as the old ones, but less is known about them.
That’s not the only problem, however. The chemical that for decades lent buttery deliciousness to popcorn has also been connected in rare cases with major lung damage. Known as diacetyl (二乙酰), it’s long been a documented problem with workers in popcorn making facilities, but also can be risky for people who just eat the snack a lot. A 2007 study published in the journal Critical Reviews found that more than 80 percent of chemical release happened when the bag was opened post-popping. Although diacetyl has been removed from most products, some critics claim that the alternative to diacetyl is also harmful.
Most of the exposure to diacetyl came from inbreathing rather than eating popcorn. Therefore, experts recommend at least waiting for the bag to cool before you open it to reduce potentially harmful chemical exposure. Better yet, make your own fresh at home with an air popper. If you like to flavor it, add organic butter or some cheese.
28. What can we know about PFOA from the text
A. PFOA doesn’t exist in Popcorn bags in America currently.
B PFOA can stop the leak of nutrition.
C. PFOA in popcorn bags leads to cancer.
D. PFOA has been removed from PFCs.
29. According to the text, who are most probably exposed to diacetyl
A. Critics claiming diacetyl is harmful.
B. Workers making popcorn in factories.
C. People making popcorn with an air popper.
D. Consumers eating microwave popcorn occasionally.
30. What does the last paragraph intend to tell us
A. How to flavor popcorn.
B. How to make popcorn at home.
C. How to make popcorn safer.
D. How to find alternatives to diacetyl.
31. What is the topic of the text
A. Is Popcorn a Healthy Choice
B. Should We Ban Microwave Popcorn
C. Should PFCs Be Removed from Microwave Popcorn
D. Is Microwave Popcorn Really Dangerous
D
Regular physical activity had nearly doubled cardiovascular (心血管的) benefits in individuals with depression or anxiety, compared with individuals without these diagnoses, according to a study presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 71st Annual Scientific Session.
The research findings add to mounting evidence that exercise improves cardiovascular health by helping to activate parts of the brain that counteract stress. Overall, the study found that people who achieved the recommended amount of physical activity per week were 17% less likely to suffer a major harmful cardiovascular event than those who exercised less. These benefits were significantly greater in those with anxiety or depression, who had a 22% risk reduction vs. a 10% risk reduction in those without either condition.
“The effect of physical activity on the brain’s stress response may be particularly relevant to those with stress-related mental conditions,” said Hadil Zureigat, MD, postdoctoral clinical research fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital and the study’s lead author. “This is not to suggest that exercise is only effective in those with depression or anxiety, but we found that these patients seem to get a greater cardiovascular benefit from physical activity.”
Rates of both depression and anxiety have risen during the outbreak of flu, and heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the US. The study findings underline the important role of exercise in maintaining heart health and reducing stress, according to the researchers.
“Any amount of exercise is helpful, particularly for those with depression or anxiety,” Zureigat said. “Not only will physical activity help them feel better, but they will also significantly reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease. It can be hard to make the transition, but once achieved, physical activity allows those with these common chronic (慢性的) stress-related mental conditions to hit two birds with one stone.”
32. Who can get the most cardiovascular benefit from regular exercise
A. Someone with little brain capacity. B. Someone with abnormal heart rates.
C. Someone diagnosed with depression. D. Someone with fear-related mental conditions.
33 What does the underlined word “counteract” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Double. B. Resist. C. Awaken. D. Transport.
34. Which of the following may the findings support
A. Physical exercise is vital to mental health.
B. Physical exercise can cure those people of flu.
C. Exercise merely works for those with depression.
D. Exercise accelerates the recovery of all mental patients.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Physical Activity Can Prevent Chronic Disease
B. Heart Disease Remains the Leading Cause of Death
C. Rates of Depression Have Risen During the Outbreak of Flu
D. Workout Is Very Good for Stress-related Patients’ Cardiovascular Health

“Mom, where do you suppose they are ” my ten-year-old son Danny asked for the twentieth time as he stared out of the window at the range (牧场). “They” were our horses, Ginger, and her three-year-old son, Charcoal, both of whom had been missing for days.
Our range and woods offered plenty of grass for six horses. However, spring thunderstorms during the past ten days had forced the nearby river out of its banks. The other horses had come to the barn (畜棚) during the downpour, but not Ginger or Charcoal.
When the rain stopped, I took Spot, our dog, to do some first-hand searching. We went through trees and brush in wet lowlands near the river. All my calling and Spot’s smelling were in vain.
The next morning, the sun struggled to shine through gray clouds, but dampness filled the air. Suddenly, Danny shouted, “Mom, come quick! There’s Ginger!” The horse stood at the range gate crying impatiently and moving back and forth as if to say “Follow me”.
“Hurry, Danny,” I said, “get the pot with some oats (燕麦). I will bring a rope.” Ginger walked in front and we followed. “I see him! I see him!” Danny shouted. Charcoal was lying on his side, not moving. His right back leg was badly injured.
“Oh, Mom. How long do you think he’s been lying here with no food and nobody to care for him ” Tears formed in Danny’s blue eyes. “Probably several days, but we’ll never know. Ginger took care of him, though, protecting him from attacks from hungry wolves or other wild animals,” I said.
“What can we do now ” Danny asked anxiously. “There’s no way to drive a vehicle down here in all this mud.” “We just have to get him up and lead him out” I said, keeping my voice confident. “Afterwards, we’ll have to call the vet (兽医) out.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
With our encouragement and the attraction of oats, Charcoal struggled and managed to stand up.

D. How to find alternatives to diacetyl.
31. What is the topic of the text
A. Is Popcorn a Healthy Choice
B. Should We Ban Microwave Popcorn
C. Should PFCs Be Removed from Microwave Popcorn
D. Is Microwave Popcorn Really Dangerous
A 29. B 30. C 31. D
根据第三段中的“Nevertheless, in response to concerns about PFCs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) worked with popcorn makers back in 2011 to remove PFOA from their packaging. Three more PFCs were banned in the next five years. So today’s microwave popcorn doesn’t have these chemicals, but critics say that the alternatives could cause problems as the old ones, but less is known about them.(然而,为了回应对PFOA的担忧,美国食品和药物管理局(FDA)早在2011年就与爆米花制造商合作,将PFOA从包装中去除。在接下来的五年里,又有三种全氟化合物被禁止使用。所以今天的微波爆米花不含这些化学物质,但批评人士说,替代品可能会像旧的爆米花一样造成问题,但人们对它们知之甚少。)”可知,美国食品和药物管理局(FDA)早在2011年就与爆米花制造商合作,将PFOA从包装中去除;因此,目前在美国爆米花袋中不存在PFOA。故选A项。
由第四段中的“The chemical that for decades lent buttery deliciousness to popcorn has also been connected in rare cases with major lung damage. Known as diacetyl (二乙酰), it’s long been a documented problem with workers in popcorn making facilities, but also can be risky for people who just eat the snack a lot. (几十年来,这种给爆米花带来黄油般美味的化学物质,在极少数情况下也与严重的肺损伤有关。它被称为二乙酰,长期以来,爆米花制作厂的工人一直被记载存在这一问题,但对那些经常吃零食的人来说也可能有风险。)”可知diacetyl(二乙酰)会损伤肺部,是生产爆米花工人记录在案的问题,说明在工厂制作爆米花的工人最易接触二乙酰。故选B项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。由最后一段“Most of the exposure to diacetyl came from inbreathing rather than eating popcorn. Therefore, experts recommend at least waiting for the bag to cool before you open it to reduce potentially harmful chemical exposure. Better yet, make your own fresh at home with an air popper. If you like to flavor it, add organic butter or some cheese.(大多数接触到双乙酰的人是通过呼吸而不是吃爆米花。因此,专家建议至少等袋子冷却后再打开,以减少潜在的有害化学物质的接触。更好的是,在家里用一个空气清新器。如果你喜欢调味,可以加入有机黄油或奶酪。)”可知本段主要告诉我们吃爆米花时,怎样减少潜在的有害化学物质的接触,即如何让爆米花更安全。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。文章第一段“There’s been lots of concern recently about the potential dangers of microwave popcorn (爆米花), but is this concern founded, or just overmuch fear-spreading The answer is that many of the chemicals that caused worry in earlier decades have been removed from microwave popcorn, but some critics still are not satisfied.(最近有很多人担心微波爆米花的潜在危险,但这种担心是有根据的,还是只是过度的恐惧传播?
33. What does the underlined word “counteract” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Double. B. Resist. C. Awaken. D. Transport.
C 33. B 34. A 35. D

根据第二段“Overall, the study found that people who achieved the recommended amount of physical activity per week were 17% less likely to suffer a major harmful cardiovascular event than those who exercised less.(总的来说,研究发现,每周达到建议运动量的人患主要有害心血管疾病的可能性比锻炼较少的人低17%)”以及划线词上文“The research findings add to mounting evidence that exercise improves cardiovascular health by helping to activate parts of the brain that”可知,运动通过帮助激活大脑中抵消压力的部分来改善心血管健康,这一研究结果进一步证明了这一点。
根据第四段“The study findings underline the important role of exercise in maintaining heart health and reducing stress, according to the researchers.(研究人员表示,研究结果强调了锻炼在保持心脏健康和减轻压力方面的重要作用)”可知,研究结果支持了体育锻炼对心理健康至关重要。故选A。

“There’s no way to drive a vehicle down here in all this mud.” “We just have to get him up and lead him out,” I said, keeping my voice confident. “Afterwards, we’ll have to call the vet (兽医) out.”

Paragraph 1:
With our encouragement and the attraction of oats, Charcoal struggled and managed to stand up. Though his eyes were dull with pain, he was brave enough to respond to our efforts. This was surely the force of life over death! Danny, with the pot, marched up the rocky slippery path through the woods, and I steadied injured Charcoal, encouraging him to follow. The hike which was ordinarily just 30 minutes now took over two hours. Charcoal could only hop with three legs for a few yards, and then rest, while we encouraged him to continue. Finally, our barn came into sight.
Paragraph 2:
Upon arriving at the barn, Danny started creating a bed for Charcoal. I hurried to phone the vet to come as soon as possible. After cleaning Charcoal’s wounds and medicating him, the vet told us, “His injury would heal, but you’ll need to treat the leg every day for several weeks, maybe longer.” He showed Danny exactly how to apply the medicine and cover the wounds. When I was watching my son carefully tend Charcoal, a thought just naturally came to mind: Bad things may happen somewhere, but love is everywhere, not only between humans, animals, but also between humans and animals.
