Growing Pains and Gains
Everyone meets problems when he grows up. Throughout my school life, I had not only pains but also gains.
When I entered Grade Nine, I faced a big problem, the 800-metre race. I always hated running, but I had no choice because of the sports exam. Although I practised hard every day, I couldn't run fast enough to pass the exam. I just wanted to give up. At that moment, the story about Spud Webb encouraged me a lot. Through hard work, Spud Webb became the shortest player in the NBA. He proved that size and body type do not matter-you can do almost anything if you never give up. His story gave me courage to solve all kind of problems.
Now, I'm not afraid of the 800-meter race any more. I have learned that nothing is impossible if we don't give up easily.2024年春学期3月份练习九年级英语试卷

Kunqu Opera, also called Kunqiang or Kunju, is one of the oldest operas in
China. It has a long history of over 600 years and it is called the Mother of Chinese
Operas. It’s known for its beautiful songs and style.
At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, Gu Jian, an artist in Kunshan near Suzhou,
worked together with other artists and they first created Kunshan qiang. Then in
the Ming Dynasty, Wei Liangfu, a great opera artist, changed it and a new kind of
opera, Kunqu Opera, came into being. After that, his student Liang Chenyu made more changes to Kunqu Opera and made the first Kunqu play in Chinese history- Huanshaji. Autistic(自闭的) children are also known as “children of the stars”. They may have difficulties
communicating with other people, but music, as a kind of artistic language, can open their hearts. By combining music with mobile technology, three students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University have tried to help them with an app called Starrypia.
Tan Yilan, Zhang Junwei and Cai Yu spent five months building their AR-gamified music therapy app for children with autism. Autistic children use the app to scan things around them and they get clips(片段) of music as well as cartoon images. Then they form these clips of music again to create songs, which would be recorded in their music diaries.
“This is actually a kind of music therapy, through which autistic children can better express themselves. The process also trains their abilities of cognition(认知), listening and concentration,” said Tan, . With AR interaction, the app encourages children to scan and tell the differences of all kinds of dolls, animals and plants. They even designed different levels, guiding users from their surroundings to nature.
According to the app's developers, traditional music therapy is usually taken in hospitals. Autistic children sit in front of computers learning some music courses. But Starrypia makes the process more like a game, drawing children’s interest, reducing children's resistance(抵触). Besides, it can be used anytime and anywhere, making the therapy lighter and easier.
Starrypia will soon be showed on the App Store. The developers are also preparing to sell the music works created by autistic children in the digital form of NFT(非同质化代币),and return the money to their families.
When they tested the APP on autistic children, they got good responses, not only in professional terms but on the children’s faces. “I saw their smiles as they played with Starrypia, making everything worth it,” said Tan.

A set of photos of a boy carrying his tennis rackets in a bamboo basket has been widely spread on the Internet. The boy, Wang Fa, 15, is a member of the Va ethnic group (佤族) in Yunnan. After winning the under-14 title at the ASICS Tennis Junior Tour in Guangzhou a year ago, an audience member
from Yunnan gave him the bamboo basket as a gift and the photos were taken.
“We always carry bamboo baskets when we work in the field. This is a
typical farming tool of the Va ethnic group. I carried my rackets in this basket
to honour my hometown,” Wang said after the match.
Before tennis, Wang was only an ordinary boy from a village. But in 2016, he was chosen by a local club as one of the first 10 local children to learn to play professional tennis. “I was nervous at the beginning because the outside world was so different from my home,” he said, adding that tennis has helped him make more friends and get a better education.
Over the past six years, Wang, along with other players at the Yunnan Wild Elephants Tennis Club, has trained hard to improve his skills. He thinks his physical strength also has improved. Every day, they must swing a racket more than 7,000 times and run 9 kilometers.
“If I weren’t chosen as a tennis player, I would still be helping out my family with farmwork back home,” Wang said. Wang’s parents didn’t want him to learn tennis at first because they couldn’t afford it. But the tennis club offered to teach him for free. His family were very grateful.
For Wang, winning the ASICS Tennis Junior Tour title was the beginning of a hopeful future. “I will aim for the top place on the professional stage,” the rising star said.
