Discuss on the video: This video is taken from a film called E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. The creature which has two big blue eyes and a long neck is an alien. Step 2 listening Listen and complete task A1 Introduce the tips of listening and judge if the statements are true, false or not given. Make preparations on task A1 according to the tips. Listen and check answers together. Listen and complete task A2 Introduce tips on how to listen for details. Make preparations on task A2 according to the tips. Listen with purposes and check answers together. Step 3 Pre-writing 1. Read for basic information 2. Read the comic strips and find out the basic elements. a. Read for the setting: Time: one night Place: in the park b. Read for the characters Paul, a boy Alf, an alien from the outer space c. Read for the plot Picture 1 Paul heard a big noise in the park and goes to investigate. A spaceship lands in the park and out steps an alien. Picture 2 The alien invites Paul to the spaceship Picture 3 Paul enters the spaceship with the alien. Picture 4 Paul and the alien fly into outer space to visit another planet. Step 4 Writing Task: write a story about aliens based on the comic strip What makes a good story: setting; structure; language Structure Language 1. To show that you are scared 1)I felt so scared that my throat tightened and my knees felt weak. (嗓子发紧,膝盖发软) 2)I froze with terror, too scared to move an inch.(吓呆了,不敢动弹) 3)I was seized by a strong sense of horror and my palms were sweating. (被深深地恐惧感所控制,手心出汗) 2. To show that you are happy 1) It seemed as if he was on top of the world. (非常开心) 2) His face beamed and his bright smile lit up the room. (眉开眼笑;笑容照亮房间) 3) His eyes danced with joy and sweetness. (充满愤怒;说不出话) Step 5 Practicing Let’s create a fantastic story about aliens based on the comic strip. Checking Sample Alf took Paul to his home planet first because he wanted Paul to see what life was like there. Paul was nervous but also excited to be the first human visitor to another planet. Walking out of the spaceship, Paul noticed that this was an unusual planet. He could see strange buildings, trees and animals. Suddenly, a green space monster with three octopus’ legs, one enormous yellow eye and a mouth full of sharp teeth moved quickly towards Paul. He realized that he was in danger! Paul tried to run back into the spaceship, but the door was locked. The space monster moved past Paul and jumped up at Alf. The monster was giving strange growls and was attacking Alf, so Paul looked for a place to hide. He ran into a building close by, running up the stairs as fast as he could. But it was too late—he could hear the growling monster coming after him up the stairs. Luckily, Paul saw a big cupboard and he quickly hid inside it. Paul could hear the monster’s heavy footsteps as it came into the room. He felt so scared that his throat tightened and his knees felt weak. Without warning the cupboard door flew open. The monster was getting ready to attack Paul when Alf came running into the room and grabbed the monster by the neck and shouted, “No!” Then, he held his hand out to Paul and helped him out of the cupboard and said, “Paul, I’d like to introduce you to my baby pet, Fluffy!” Fluffy looked at Paul, yawned, and promptly fell asleep. Paul was still shaken up but felt relieved to know that the “scary” monster was not dangerous after all, and actually just wanted to lick his face. Paul’s eyes danced with joy and sweetness. Alf told Paul he would take him to meet his family. Together, Alf, Paul and Fluffy went to Alf’s house nearby. After meeting Alf’s parents and sister, Paul realized that even though he and Alf were totally different species, they had some things in common. For example, they both had a sister and loved their family very much. Paul was also intrigued by the many differences between Alf’s planet and the Earth. He could not wait to explore other parts of the universe with his new best friend. Step 5 Homework Listen to the recording again.
