Do you notice the music playing in the background when you’re shopping in a supermarket Do you care about how fruits and vegetables are placed Though we may not realize these, most of us do pay attention to things like colors, sounds and even smells when shopping. So don’t go shopping when you’re hungry. And music also makes you want to buy more. One study found that people spend 34% longer shopping in shops where music is played.
In most supermarkets, many expensive goods are kept on shelves( 架子)at eye level, where they are easily seen and reached. Cheaper goods are placed closer to the floor, so you have to bend down to get them.

Peter loves baseball. Last summer, he helped to coach a school baseball team. When he first watched the team of 12-year-olds play baseball, his first impressions( 印象)were not really positive.
One player often left as soon as they started losing. Another player paid too much attention to all their mistakes during the game. Other boys preferred to dig up the grass when they weren’t in the play. A lot of boys threw their baseball bats when they lost the match.
While their baseball skills improved over time with more practice, there were still problems. The team had a long way to go. For example, some boys were hard on those who made mistakes. Instead of being supportive or encouraging, they blamed(责怪)each other.
Peter started one-on-one talks with each player to discuss things that he had noticed. Some were about skills like holding the bat up higher or opening their eyes when they were making a catch. But most were about staying positive and supporting each other.
Things began to change slowly. The boys began to take the duties for their play instead of blaming others for mistakes. They stayed optimistic even when losing. The team culture was improving.
Players began encouraging each other and supporting teammates. Peter was especially pleased to see some of the boys taking leadership roles and having their own one-onone talks with their teammates.
Peter didn’t think he made huge progress in teaching the boys how to throw, catch or hit the ball better, but he was pleased that their conversations around the character led to something positive. It is believed that robots could be our friends one day, but until now they have always seemed more machines than humans. A new study has found that in fact it’s possible for robots to fool us—they just have to be less than perfect.
Wykowska, a researcher, came up with a test using a child-sized robot called iCub. In the test, people were asked to press a button(按钮) when a green box appeared on a screen, while iCub reacted(反应)to red boxes. Wykowska programmed the robot to take different lengths ( 长度)of time to react, just like a person would. After that, people couldn’t tell whether they had been competing with a machine or a person according to the timings of pressing the buttons. She believes that making robots have more human reactions is the key to making better robots and creating more trust between humans and robots.
In another study with iCub, the robot and a man watched videos together. In the first test, iCub greeted the man, and asked for his name. It shared opinions about the videos, laughed and showed expressions such as surprise and joy. In the second test, however, iCub did not communicate and just made machine-like noises. The team found that people in the first test were more likely to believe that the robot had its own thoughts.
The team now wants to know if people can build up closer relationships with machine-like robots that still show human-like behaviors. They plan to repeat the tests using robots of different shapes and sizes, to check how people react.
