At 18, she studied medicine instead of marrying like most girls. 8 years later, she graduated from Peking Union Medical(PUMC) and became the first woman resident physician in the OB-GYN department of the PUMC Hospital. After working for a few years, she was sent to study in Europe in the US in 1939.Though invited to stay, she chose to return to serve the women and children at home, becoming the first woman director of the OB-GYN department of the PUMC Hospital in 1941. However, a few months later, the OB-GYN department was closed due to the war. But she opened a private clinic to help the poor patients. Although holding many important positions over the next several decades, she was more interested in tending patients.
Neither marrying nor retiring, she was known as the “mother of ten thousand babies” and delivered over 50000 babies in her lifetime. She died in 1983, leaving her life savings to others.
