Have you ever wondered how your favorite NBA team received its famous name All NBA teams have an interesting story or a history behind their names. Some of the names reflected the city’s culture or history, others came from previous owners and many were selected through “Name the Team” contests.
For teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and the Utah Jazz, the names were not always a reflection of the city. Even though Los Angeles has no lakes, the Lakers name has been a city treasure for almost 40 years. Before going to Los Angeles, the team originated in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1947, team officials changed the name to the Lakers to reflect the Minnesota State’s nickname, “Land of 10,000 Lakes”. The team name went unchanged after moving to Los Angeles in 1960.
Because the Utah’s team originated in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was called the Jazz. In 1974, New Orleans club officials chose the name to represent the city for its reputation as the “Jazz Capital of the World”. The name stayed with the team even after they found a new home in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979.
The original owner of the Chicago Bulls, Richard Klein, named the team the Bulls. He picked the name because a fighting bull is relentless and never quits. Klein, who founded the club in 1966, believed these qualities were necessary for a championship team and hoped his Chicago athletes would live up to the team name. The Bulls, the winner of the six NBA championships, has definitely followed the belief.
In 1967, the Indiana Pacers selected their team name in a different way from most other teams. Their decision was based on what they wanted to achieve in the NBA. Team officials chose the Pacers name because the organization wanted to set the “pace” in professional basketball.
28. Why is the Los Angeles’ team named “the Lakers”
A. The name was selected from a “Name the Team” contest.
B. The name shows that Los Angeles is a city with various lakes.
C. It was named after a city treasure, which had a long history.
D. The team got this name in another state, which had a lot of lakes.
29. Which of the following refers to the “Jazz Capital of the World”
A. New Orleans. B. Salt Lake City. C. Los Angeles. D. Minneapolis.
30. Why did Richard Klein name the Chicago’s team the Bulls
A. He had guessed the success of the team.
B. People in Chicago used to like watching bullfighting.
C. He wished the team to have the qualities of fighting bulls.
D. Chicago was then a city famous for fighting bulls.
31. In which part of a newspaper can you probably read the text
A. Life. B. Sports. C. Society. D. Education.
D
Scientists have done a lot of research on sleep. They’ve shown that sleeplessness can lead to both weight gain and poor performance in school. Might it also affect your moods (情绪) or your behavior A team of scientists based in Shanghai, China decided to investigate.
To do that, they took advantage of data (数据) from what’s known as the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. Begun in 2015, this study followed over 10,000 U.S. kids into adulthood. All were 9 to 10 years old when they started taking part. ABCD researchers have been collecting records from parents on how much their kids sleep on a regular basis. The scientists also have been surveying whether a kid might have a habit of getting into fights or breaking rules. They even note whether students have difficulty focusing their attention.
Wei Cheng, a mathematician from China, teamed up with other researchers, making a detailed study of the ABCD data. Cheng’s group found out that kids who on average slept less than 7 hours a night were more likely to have behavior problems than kids who slept more. Kids who missed out on sleep also had more mood problems, including depression. Feeling sad or blue for longer than a week or two can be a sign of depression. Poor sleepers were also more likely to have stomach problems and headaches.
According to Kyla Wahlstrom, a professor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, at night, your brain sorts information to link related facts but it takes the brain longer to organize negative (消极的) moods than positive ones. If you don’t get enough sleep, your brain might not have time to finish tidying up. If the brain runs out of time, you’re left with negative moods. That may explain why Cheng’s group found out not getting enough sleep was connected with mood problems, says Wahlstrom.
32. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. The data. B. The good performance.
C. The ABCD Study. D. The investigation.
33. How did Wei Cheng and his group conduct their study
A. By analyzing the data collected by others.
B. By observing the American kids’ behavior.
C. By gathering information on American kids.
D. By recording the American kids’ sleeping time.
34. Why is Kyla Wahlstrom mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To stress the importance of enough sleep.
B. To encourage people to sleep more at night.
C. To introduce the danger of negative moods.
D. To further explain the findings of Cheng’s group.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Keeping Fit by Sleeping Well B. Making Yourself a Perfect Sleeper
C. Remove Bad Moods by Having a Good Sleep D. Putting Yourself in a Positive State of Mind

“Here you go,” Melanie said, handing Ava a pink envelope.
“Thanks.” Ava said. “But what is it ”
“An invitation to my pool party. It’s Saturday at two. There will be a lot of fun things to do. You are going to love it so much. Do come, please.” Melanie kept talking but Ava wasn’t listening.
The words “pool party” echoed (回响) through her mind. Ava had a secret she didn’t even tell her best friend Melanie—Ava couldn’t swim. Every time she tried to learn, she’d wind up with water up her nose and she’d be out of the pool as quickly as possible.
“You’re coming, right ” Melanie said
“Huh ” Ava jumped.
“Do you think you could come a little early I could use your help inflating (使充气) the floating basketball hoops (篮筐) and the ball. And I will need you to help me set the tables.”
Ava didn’t know what to say. Melanie was one of her best friends. She couldn’t miss her party. But she didn’t want the whole school to find out she couldn’t swim. That would be too embarrassing. “I think I might be busy this Saturday,” Ava said, lowering her head. She saw the disappointment on Melanie’s face. “Maybe I could stop by for a little while, but I definitely wouldn’t have time to swim.”
Ava spent the rest of the school day trying to avoid Melanie’s questions about what she had to do on Saturday and why she couldn’t stay for the whole party. Ava felt awful. That night she asked her parents to ground (不准出门) her or make other plans so she couldn’t go to Melanie’s party.
“Ava, this is silly,” her mother said. “Melanie is your best friend. She won’t care that you can’t swim.” Ava wasn’t so sure.
“Just be honest with Melanie. She will understand you,” her father said.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When Saturday arrived, Ava’s parents drove her to the party right on time.Ava decided to tell the truth.

书面表达
Dear Peter,
I’m writing to share with you my experience of taking the Chinese traditional culture practice class in our school.
The course covers a wide range of topics, including calligraphy, paper cutting, Chinese painting, and tea ceremony. Through these courses, I have gained a deeper understanding of Chinese traditional culture and its rich heritage. Not only does it enhance my cultural awareness, but it also provides me with a platform to explore and appreciate the beauty of Chinese traditions.
If you have the opportunity, I would love to show you some of the skills I have learned.
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写
When Saturday arrived, Ava’s parents drove her to the party right on time. They had even convinced her to wear her bathing suit under her clothes. “You don’t have to go in the water, but you might get wet,” her mother insisted. Melanie ran up to Ava the moment she stepped out of the car. “You made it! The party would have been ruined if you weren’t here,” Melanie said excitedly. Ava felt very bad. “Melanie is a good friend and she deserves the truth,” she thought.
Ava decided to tell the truth. “Mel, I have to tell you something. I didn’t really have other plans. I was just afraid to tell you that I can’t swim,” Ava said sincerely, looking her friend in the eye. However, to Ava’s surprise, Melanie laughed and said, “Perfect! We won’t have to fight over who will be the judge of the pool games. No one ever wants to get out of the water to do it. ” Ava’s face lit up. “I could do that. It sounds like fun,” Ava said excitedly. “It will be,” Melanie said, putting her arm through Ava’s and heading toward the pool.

M: Hello. May I help you
W: Hi, it’s Laura Carlton here. We’ve just arrived at the holiday flat, but I can’t get the hot water and heating to work.
M: Don’t worry. In the upstairs cupboard you will find the water heater. You’ll see three main controls on the left. Switch it to the “on” position.
W: OK. While you are on the phone, we can’t find a few things we need, like extra pillows and some washing powder. Is there any
M: Pillows, Yes, if you look in the cupboard in your bedroom, there should be four or five on the top shelf. And if you want to do some washing, the powder should be near the door in the large blue box.
W: Thanks. What about visiting the town Could you give me some advice
M: As for places to visit, do go and see the art gallery. The exhibition is small, but really good. It gets very crowded on Sundays, so I suggest you visit it on a quiet day, later in the week. But not on Thursdays which are market days.
W: Got it! Thanks a lot!
Text 10
M: Does everyone dream Everyone does. When people say that they never dream, what they really mean is that they don’t remember their dreams or they don’t think their dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have had nightmares or haven’t had a sound sleep. One of my patients named Tom said that he used to be a great dreamer, but suddenly he stopped having dreams. I asked him what happened. It turned out that his brother died by heart attack and later he dreamt about it once. He felt so sad. Generally, when there was some bad event and the dream about it was too terrible, people prefer not to dream about it. As long as you dream even the dream is frightening, your mind is working on it. My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems. We see certain events take place in dreams. When a person is having dreams, he or she can actually have a better sleep. Because dreaming is another form of brain functioning. Also, dreams can prevent people from some diseases and help with daily problems. So, have a good dream and enjoy it.
