Kaycee always had a love for animals. Turtles,cats, dogs, hamsters - Kaycee loved them all. She had several pets growing up and was responsible for taking care of all of them. Despite her busy studies in high school, she even made time to volunteer at the nearest animal shelter. As son as Kaycee got her driver's license and a set of wheels, she would spend every weekend driving several miles to the outskirts (市) of Chicago to help walk the dogs and clean the cages.
For Kayce, these animals were in need of a loving and permanent home. In the chain-link fences of the shelter, no animal could feel truly at home. Still, Kaycee hoped that her actions would help give a sense of certainty and a source of love for these lonely creatures. Yet, as she would find out, the act of caring for animals may end up bringing light and warmth to your life as well.
One Saturday, while making her rounds at the animal shelter, Kaycee noticed a middle-aged man who was looking for a dog to adopt. After caring for so many dogs with rough pasts and a history of abusive treatment, Kaycee recognized a similar pain in the man's eyes as he wandered through the halls of the shelter, almost in a daze (迷茫) himself.
After showing the man around for half an hour, Kaycee finaly took him aside and asked, "Do you mind if I ask what's wrong You seem to be in pain from something". Feeling surprised, the man chuckled embarrassedly and sighed. "You're pretty bright for your age," he said, "My wife... She... died a few months ago and I still haven't gotten past it. I’m hoping that adopting a pet may help me to pick up the pieces (重整旗鼓)."

Guiding the man to the cages, Kaycee asked hime what kind of dog he’d like to adopt. Confused and dazed, the man stuttered , unable to give a name. Sighing deeply, he confessed that he was not the one who was interested in dogs,but his wire. Realizing the pain hidden under his tearful eyes, Kaycee comforted him with patience, leading him to pick from one dog to another while explaining every dog in details. Yet the gloomy cloud still hanging over his head, all efforts went in vain . At last, they came to a cage with a brown corgi inside. With strong hope, Kaycee introduced this corgi, who was abused and then abandoned with only three legs and one eye left. Despite his disability, he is the most optimistic one. Noticing their visits, the corgiwagged his tail (揺尾巴) merrily, staring at the man with his big bright eye. Struck by the short eye-contact and its stories, the man made an immediate decision to adopt the corgi. Surprised and delighted, Kaycee nodded her head in relief. After signing related documents, Kayce eyed them disappear at the gate. Caring for animals could bring light and warmth to both animals and human, she thought.

Kaycee felt a bit uneasy after hearing the man's story, but she nodded and held his hand."I am sorry for your loss. But you'll make it," comforted Kaycee, her tone soft and warm. Leading the man to the cages, Kaycee inquired him about the type of dog he was considering adopting while patiently explaining every possible details of each dog, but the man's eyes just kept drifting back and forth.Utterly dazed, the man, once again, chuckled embarrassedly and stuttered, " Thank you! But I just don't ...", his voice tinged with apology and gloom. Kaycee,, beaming a warm smile, encouraged the man and guided him to continue their research.
At last, they came to a cage with a brown corgi inside. Pressing his nose against the cage, the scarred dog affetionately gazed up at theman and Kaycee with his gem-like eyes, wagging its tail merrily. "He is Skip, a sweetheart. He was once abused but is always resilient." explained Kaycee. The man knelt down, stroking his fur tenderly. Their eyes locked together, the man held Skip into his arms, tears speakling, " He is the one. I'll take him". Kayce eyed them out of the shelter, quite sure that Skip found a permanent home and the man a loving companion. Caring for animals could bring light and warmth to both animals and humans.
