A quick walk onto a frozen pond (池塘) could have been a disaster for these two boys.
Cruz Genet, 11, and Anthony Skopick, 10, couldn’t agree more. Were the birds out on the ice ducks or geese There was only one way to find out. So on a cold January evening last year, the two friends walked onto the frozen pond near their homes to get a better look.
First, they threw a rock onto the ice to test it. Believing the ice would hold their weight, Anthony took a few steps, and then he crashed through the seemingly frozen surface. “There was no sound and no crack”, he told the reporter. “I just fell through immediately.”
Cruz rushed to help his frightened friend. And he fell in the pond, too. Cruz managed to lift himself out of the water and onto a harder part. He then carefully worked his way toward Anthony, but he fell in the pond again. This time, he couldn’t get out.
The two boys were in icy cold water and quickly losing feeling in their limbs (四肢). Cruz was sure that he was going to die.
Anthony’s older sister had seen the boys fall through the ice and started shouting for help. John Lavin, a neighbor driving nearby on his way to the store, heard her. He quickly pulled over. Seeing the boys, he took a nearby buoy (浮标), kicked off his shoes, and ran into the water. Lavin made his way to Cruz and Anthony and drew them back to land. They were taken to hospital, where doctors discovered that their five-minute stay in the water had lowered their body temperature nearly ten degrees.

On a break from his studies in the MIT Media Lab, Anirudh Sharma traveled home to Mumbai, India. While there, he noticed that throughout the day his T-shirts were gradually gathering something that looked like dirt. “I realized this was air pollution,or sooty(像煤一样)particulate matter (PM),made of black particles released from exhaust(尾气)of vehicles,” Sharma says. “This is a major health issue.” Soot consists of tiny black particles, about 2.5 micrometers or smaller, produced by incomplete burning of fossil fuels.
Back at MIT, Sharma set out to help solve this air-pollution issue. After years of research and development, Sharma’s startup Graviky Labs has developed technology that attaches to exhaust systems of diesel generators(柴油发电机)to collect particulate matter. Scientists at Graviky then turn it into ink, called Air-Ink, for artists around the world. So far, the startup has collected I.6 billion micrograms of particulate matter. More than 200 gallons of Air-Ink have been harvested for a growing community of more than 1,000 artists, from Bangalore to Boston, Shanghai, and London.
Posted all over Graviky Lab’s Facebook page today are photos of art made from the Air-Ink and pant, including street wall paintings, body art and clothing prints. At first, there was still no specific application for the ink. Then the startup decided to find new ways to further spread its mission. It chose to do so through art. “Art helps us raise awareness about where the ink and paint comes from. Air pollution knows no borders. Our ink sends a message that pollution is one of the resources in our world that’s the hardest to collect and use. But it can be done,” Sharma says.
28. What struck Sharma most during his break in India
A. Coal industry in Mumbai. B. Health issue of the locals.
C. Dirt on his T-shirts. D. Incomplete burning of fossil fuels.
29. According to the text, what is Air-Ink
A. It’s a cleaner of outdoor air B. It’s a printing technology
C. It’s a newly-founded company D. It’s a product made from PM
30. What can we infer about Air-Ink from the text
A. It raises environmental awareness. B. It makes pollution acceptable.
C. It helps Sharma make a profit. D. It improves artistic effect.
31. What might be the best title for the text
A. Arts know no borders B. Less pollution, more art
C. Waste has no price D. Creative thinking, effective painting

The Amazon rainforest, is as undisturbed a place as most people can imagine, but even there, the effects of a changing climate are playing out. Now, research suggests that many of the region’s most sensitive bird species are starting to evolve in response to warming.
Birds are often considered sentinel(哨兵)species — meaning that they indicate the overall health of an ecosystem — so scientists are particularly interested in how they’re responding to climate change. In general, the news has not been good. For instance, a 2019 report by the National Audubon Society found that more than two-thirds of North America’s bird species will be in danger of extinction by 2100 if warming trends continue on their current course.
For the new study, researchers collected the biggest dataset so far on the Amazon’s resident birds, representing 77 non-migratory species and lasting the 40 years from 1979 to 2019. During the study period, the average temperature in the region rose, while the amount of rainfall declined, making for a hotter, dryer climate overall. According to the report on November 12 in the journal Science Advances, 36 species have lost substantial weight, as much as 2 percent of their body weight per decade since 1980. Meanwhile, all the species showed some decrease in average body mass, while a third grew longer wings.
Because of the study's long time series and large sample sizes, the authors were able to show the morphological(形态学的)effects of climate change on resident birds. However, the researchers themselves are unsure and wonder what advantage the wing length changes give the birds, but suppose smaller birds may have an easier time keeping cool. In general, smaller animals have a larger rate of surface area to body size, so they dissipate more heat faster than a bigger animal. Less available food, such as fruit or insects, in dryer weather might lead to smaller body size.
32. Why are scientists fond of doing research on birds
A. They have small body sizes. B. They are ecological balance indicators.
C. They live in an undisturbed rainforest. D. They are sensitive to hot weather.
33. What can we learn from the new study
A. A third of species have been extinct for a decade.
B. About 26 species responded to climate change with longer wings.
C. Two-thirds of species showed a considerable decrease in weight.
D. 36 species lost 2% of their body weight every year.
34. What does the underlined word "dissipate" in the last paragraph mean
A. Take on. B. Lead to. C. Put up. D. Give off.
35. What would probably the researchers further study
A. Why it is easier for smaller animals to keep cool.
B. Whether bird species in North America will be extinct in 2100.
C. Why the Amazonian birds have lost substantial weight.
D. What effects the wing length changes have on birds.

第二节(满分25分)

Daniel’s mother, Debbie Ashworth struggled to raise her two kids. As the older child at home, Daniel was a good help to his mother, cleaning the room and caring for his younger brother, Tony.
On a cold winter morning, Debbie asked the kids to go to the supermarket for some groceries. A toy panda on the shelf caught Tony’s eyes. It was so adorable that he could hardly tear himself away from it. Knowing that they couldn’t afford it, Daniel told his brother to put it back. But Tony really wanted it and was unwilling to leave. “Please, I can wait until Mom’s salary came in on June 15th,” Tony said. Daniel hesitated for a while, then took out a pen and wrote a note, which read, “Please keep the toy panda for my little brother until June 15th, when my mother gets her salary to pay for it. Thanks.” Placing the note on top of the box, they left the supermarket relieved.
One of the staff spotted the note, who then showed it to the manager. The note melted everyone there and they decided to do something thoughtfully. They put away the toy panda so that it wouldn’t be purchased by other shoppers. After that, they tried their best to search for the two boys, but in vain. There was no other clue(线索)on the note to identify them. It appeared that they had no alternative but to wait until June 15th, which was about half a month away.
The big day finally arrived. Unexpectedly, the two boys didn’t show up. “Maybe they have forgotten all about the toy,” one clerk whispered. “Impossible. A toy animal might not mean much to an adult. But for a child, it could mean the world,” the manager said. “We must come up with a way to contact them.” They decided to turn to the Internet by posting the note and their phone number online, hoping it could bring a surprise.

第二节
The post eventually attracted the attention of Debbie. She immediately recognized that it was her son’s handwriting. Full of gratitude, she phoned the supermarket and thanked for their kindness. The manager invited the mom and her two sons back to the supermarket, presenting the toy panda to little Tony. Holding his beloved toy, Tony’s face lit up and his eyes were shining with great joy. “But why didn’t you come for the toy on June 15th ” the manager asked the two boys in a gentle voice. Hearing this, both of them lowered their heads.
“I lost my job last month,” Debbie sighed(叹气). She explained that knowing the news, the boys decided to keep the toy as a secret. So she had no idea about the case until she spotted the post online. Hearing this, everyone present was deeply moved. Turning to Debbie, the manager said, “I wonder if you are willing to work here as an assistant ” Hearing this, tears of gratitude welled up in Debbie’s eyes, and she held the manager’s hands, saying, “I couldn’t thank you enough.” Due to their help, the whole family felt warmth in the cold weather and believed that there was kindness in every corner of the world.
