Many animals use camouflage (伪装) to make them harder to see. Hunters do this so that the animals they want to eat don’t see them and run away. And prey animals, such as deer and zebra, use camouflage to avoid being eaten.
But why do large cats have such different patterns(图案) Lions don’t have any spots at all, but cheetahs(猎豹) have small black spots and tigers have large black stripes and orange fur.
Will Allen at the University of Bristol was interested in this question. He decided to study large cats to find out the reasons for these different patterns. To find out the answer, he also needed to talk to scientists from many different fields, such as psychology, biology, engineering and computer science. Experts from each of these areas of science helped him with his work.
His results show that there is a clear connection between patterns and environment. Cats in forests with lots of trees and plants have more complicated (复杂的) patterns than cats which live in areas without lots of trees. And cats that spend more time in trees have more irregular(不规律的) patterns than cats that hunt at night. Will explains that a cat’s camouflage depends on where it lives and how it hunts. Evolution(进化) has created the most suitable pattern for each particular hunter. His studies mean we can look at a big cat’s fur and predict its habitat and lifestyle.

① With her silver hair, 68-year-old Xu Lili stands out in a crowd of young people. Xu goes square dancing every night with her friends in the center of Harbin. Their dancing has strong rhythm and a wide range of movements, making it more like disco than the slow traditional Chinese square dancing. Xu is the organizer and the only senior taking part.
② Apart from Xu, most dancers are in their 20s. “Grandma Xu may be old, but we all learn from her,” says Zhang Dongkai, 23. “She is our leader.”
The contrast between her age and her dancing has not only endeared her to those around her, but also made her famous online, with many netizens praising her dancing and optimistic attitude. Instead of just looking after grandchildren, increasing numbers of elderly Chinese are enjoying their own lives.
Wang Yun, 72, goes to a dance class for seniors every week at Harbin University, which was founded in 1984 and is one of the earliest universities for the elderly in China. Hundreds of thousands have graduated from the institution over the past three decades.
③ The average age of Wang’s dance class is over 60. Teacher Li Yongxia says she has taught dance there for more than 10 years. Many students were not in good shape when they first came, but dancing changed their attitude toward life.
Harbin University for the elderly is very popular. Though there are branch schools in every district of Harbin, many courses are full soon after the online registration (注册) channels are opened.
Qu Wenyong, a sociology professor at Heilongjiang University who has been following the elderly care industry for many years, says the ages from 60 to 70 have become part of the “golden decade” for China’s elderly as the country’s average (平均的) life expectancy increases. “They are healthy, they have time and they require a higher quality of life,” Qu says.
④ Not long ago, a video of 66-year-old Deng Xiaohui walking a catwalk with her partner in Harbin’s Central Street received more than 1 million likes on social media.

More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, such teaching tools as iPads are used in a lot of courses, including language, history and science.
Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. Instead of spending valuable class time listening to texts or watching teaching videos, students can do this on their own and come to class prepared for discussion.
The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a dialogue only once and understand it, so they can save time for doing other things. Other students, however, might need to listen to the same dialogue again and again to understand it. Using iPads is especially helpful to students who are learning a language at different paces.
The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn (such as listening to stories and watching movies). The class has become much more interesting and creative.
There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can pay more attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are stored in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now. “I can listen to my language material or watch teaching videos on the bus, instead of having to wait until I get home,” a student explained.
Many adults complain that technologies such as iPads are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate students from each other. If a student spends more time watching videos on an iPad, he will have fewer opportunities to have face-to-face communication with others.
However, technologies are already a part of most students’ day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make changes with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.
22.What does the expression “at their own pace” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.According to their own timetable. B.Without their teachers’ help.
C.Because of their wonderful goals. D.Against their parents’ hope.

24.The writer probably agrees that ________.

Writing Help(s)Me Grow
As we progress through life, a variety of things or people contribute to our personal growth and development.
I used to be a shy person who never felt comfortable speaking in front of a crowd and I often felt like my voice didn’t matter. Growing up, I was often overlooked and felt like I was nobody.
But all of this changed when I discovered my true love for writing. It helped me find my voice. I started to express my thoughts and feelings through my writing freely, which helped me grow more confident. Through writing, I was able to learn more about who I was and what I wanted in life.
My growth and confidence have changed my life for the better. I have been able to realize my dreams with courage and faith. Writing has opened up many new doors for me and has made me into the person I am today.
