If you’re looking for the perfect activity to do with your teens — try board games! Here are three board games for teens that will exercise their brains in amazing ways.
Hive (Ages: 8 and up)
Hive is considered a board game, except there is no board. As each player adds pieces, the board is created. Hive comes with a rulebook that explains what each piece can/can’t do.
About the Game:
As more and more pieces are added, the game becomes a fight to see who can be the first to capture the opposing Queen Bee. You can become quite skilled soon because playing the game is easy — even though you have to be on your toes thinking through each move.
Blokus (Ages: 7 and up)
Blokus Board Game received a Mensa award for promoting healthy brain activity.
About the Game:
The goal of this game is for the players to fit all of their pieces onto the board. The piece cannot lie next to the other player’s pieces. But it must be placed touching at least one corner of their pieces already on the board. The player who gets rid of all of their tiles (棋子) first is the winner. The game can be repeated for more family fun.
Codenames (Ages: 14 and up)
Codenames is a family game for 4-8 players.
About the Game:
There are two opposing spymasters who know the identity of 25 agents. Their teammates know the agents only by their codenames. Spymasters give one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the board. Teammates try to guess words while avoiding those belonging to the opposing team. The team managing to contact all their agents first wins the game.

At 98, Dick Van Dyke still sings with his group, The Vantastix, and still makes it all look easy. When asked how important it is that he’s having fun when he’s doing it, Van Dyke replied, “My whole career has relied on that. It’s such a blessing to find a way of making a living that you love. I feel so sorry for people who hate their job. I look forward to going to work every morning!”
And some of his work helped define a generation. Take “The Dick Van Dyke Show”; it ran for five years on CBS, and it was such a hit that they’re bringing it back. This week, CBS aired a two-hour tribute (致敬), “Dick Van Dyke, 98 Years of Magic”, and for the occasion, they recreated the original Dick Van Dyke Show” set, down to that well-known sofa.
Early in his career Van Dyke was quoted as saying he only wanted to make films his children could watch. That got the attention of Walt Disney, who promptly cast him in “Mary Poppins”. And his next few films were equally family-friendly, like “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” which happened to have been co-written by James Bond creator Ian Fleming. From then on, Van Dyke was almost always assigned to play the good guy, though he claims to have missed out on a choice part: “Yeah, I could have been James Bond. When Sean Connery left, the producer said, ‘Would you like to be the next Bond ’ I said, ‘Have you heard my British accent ’ That’s a true story!”
It seems that in show biz the true legends never stop. In an interview from 2017 with his friends, Van Dyke described what it was like hitting 90: “People are more afraid of aging than they are of death these days. And I want to say that remain young in heart and there’s a lot of good living to do.”
24.What can we infer from Dyke’s reply in Paragraph 1
A.He enjoys his job. B.He hates morning work.
C.He sees his job as a burden. D.He prefers leisure to work.
25.What did CBS do for Dyke
A.They created a new set for his show.
B.They bought a famous sofa for him.
C.They made a special program for him.
D.They invited young generation to watch his show.
26.Which statement is true about Dyke’s career
A.His films are rarely family-friendly.
B.His films are only made for his children.
C.Van Dyke was always playing the good guy.
D.Van Dyke had the chance to play James Bond.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Forever Young. B.Work Comes First.
C.Always Have Fun. D.Legends Are Timeless.

African grey parrots (鹦鹉) help their peers complete tasks despite no immediate benefit to themselves, researchers have found in the first study to show that birds display such apparently “selfless” behaviour.
Writing in the journal Current Biology, Brucks and colleagues report how they tested African grey parrots in a task that involved the birds passing a token, in the form of a metal ring, through a hole in their section to a neighbouring bird of the same species. This token could then be passed by the second bird to a human, via another hole, who would exchange it for a piece of nut.
The team found African grey parrots helped their neighbours by passing tokens to their neighbour when a human held out their hand, allowing the second bird to drop it through-the hole and receive a tasty treat.
The same behaviour was seen when the roles of the birds were reversed (颠倒). The more tokens a bird had previously given, the more they received in return.
However, the team stress previously the birds did not know that their favour would be rewarded, suggesting it is something of a “selfless” act.
The team say it may be due to African grey parrots gathering in huge flocks at night but splitting into smaller groups during the day to forage (觅食). Brucks said such behaviour is thought to require strong social cognitive (认知) abilities, adding that being helpful might help the birds gain a good reputation with their peers, making it more likely they would team up for foraging and other tasks.
Dr Manon Schweinfurth, an expert in animal behaviour, said evidence of reciprocal (互惠的) behaviour in African grey parrots is quite interesting. “It has been thought that it is so cognitively demanding that only humans can show it. But we now get more and more evidence from other animals that they are able to show reciprocity,” she said.
28.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The methods of observation. B.The comparison of the species.
C.One feeding behaviour of parrots. D.One example of Brucks’ experiments.
29.Brucks’ study found that grey parrots help their peers complete tasks even if .
A.there was no human signal B.there was no neighbor request
C.they received no instant reward D.they got punished for a selfish act

A.Possible reasons for the research finding. B.Potential application of the research result.
C.A further explanation of the research method. D.A reasonable doubt about the research process.
31.What does the text mainly talk about
A.A scientific discovery about grey parrots. B.The development of parrots’ selfless spirit.
C.A practical experiment on animal behaviour. D.The protection of parrots’ living environment.

Have you ever seen your cat or dog eating grass They do so because it can help their digestion, and many wild species use natural substances to prevent and control diseases. This is called “zoo pharmacognosy” or, more commonly, animal self-medication.
Scientists have discovered that tamarin monkeys use a specific tree resin (树脂) as medicine. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, scientists followed several groups of them to collect data. During one of these daily studies, tamarin monkeys were observed rubbing their bodies on the trunk of a tree. At first, researchers thought that they were marking their territory, a common behaviour in this species. Botanical experts later confirmed that the tree was a species of cabreuva, which is well known for its medical properties.
Researchers decided to place camera-traps in different sites at the foot of the tree to record future visits by tamarin monkeys. The records surprisingly showed that many animals living in the forest visited it. Totally, ten species were observed. For many of them, it was the first time that behaviors similar to self-medication had been observed. More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other’s fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back parasites (寄生虫).
While further studies are needed to identify the properties of the resin and thus confirm that this is indeed self-medication, the use of it suggests that cabreuva represents a common and universal drugstore for the residents of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is likely to be a valuable resource helping the species maintain their magnitude by improving their health.
This discovery could have an important protection influence, as the disappearance of some trees could potentially affect the survival of some animals.
32.Why do tamarin monkeys rub themselves against the tree
A.They are trying to cure diseases. B.They would like to digest what they eat.
C.They feel like occupying the land. D.They are attracting companions’ attention.
33.What do researchers find through camera-traps
A.Many animals copy monkeys’ behaviors. B.Animals can help each other clean the fur.
C.The cabreduva is the habitat of tamarin monkeys. D.Resin can be used as medicine for some animals
34.What does the underlined word “magnitude” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Populations. B.Characteristics. C.Similarities. D.Flexibilities.
35.What is the possible significance of the discovery
A.Promoting evolution of creatures. B.Increasing the production of resin.
C.Contributing to forest conservation. D.Motivating the study of monkeys’ diet.

I brought home a homemade invitation to a party and showed it to my mother. “I’m not going,” I said. “She’s a new girl named Ruth, and Berniece and Pat aren’t going. She asked the whole class, all 36 of us.” As Momma studied the handmade invitation, she looked strangely sad. Then she announced, “Well, you are going! I’ll pick up a present tomorrow.” I couldn’t believe it. Momma had never made me go to a party!
When Saturday arrived, Momma rushed me out of bed and made me wrap the pretty pink mirror-brush-and-comb set she’d bought. She drove me over in her yellow and white car and then left. Ruth answered the door and guided me to follow her up the steepest, oldest staircase I’d ever seen.
Stepping through the door brought me great relief. The hardwood floors was shining in the sun-filled sitting room. Snow-white doilies (装饰小垫) covered the backs and arms of well-worn furniture. The biggest cake I ever saw sat on one table. It was decorated with nine pink candles, a messily printed Happy Birthday Ruth. Thirty-six cups filled with homemade fudge (软糖) were near the cake—each one with a name on it. “This will be wonderful if everyone gets here.” I thought.
“Where’s your mom ” I asked Ruth. Looking down at the floor, she said, “Well she’s sick.” “Oh. Where’s your dad ” “He’s gone.” Then there was a silence. Some 15 minutes passed… then 10 more. It occurred to me that no one else was coming. How could I get out of here As I sank into self-pity, I heard muffled (压抑的) sobs. Looking up, I saw tears in Ruth’s eyes. All at once my heart was filled with sympathy for Ruth. There we were two small girls and a cake, 36 candy-filled cups, three dozen party gifts, games to play and prizes to win.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

W: Last class, we talked about different diet cultures all over the world. Today, I will tell you something about the different table manners in different places around the world. Do you know how to behave at the table And how should we use knives and forks in a formal Western meal
When having a meal, Europeans usually hold the knife in the right hand, and the fork in the left. They use the knife and fork with both hands and keep them in their hands until they finish eating.
But Americans, on the other hand, may use just one hand whenever possible and keep the other hand on their lap. They use the fork in their right hand to pick up fried potatoes. When they have to cut meat, they change the fork to the left hand and cut it. Then, they put down the knife and change the fork to their right hand to pick up the sliced meat. Then, perhaps, they will suddenly think of their coffee or orange juice. So they have to put down their fork in order to drink the coffee or orange juice. As you can see, Americans are busy at the dinner table.
Europeans usually have their coffee after meals, but most Americans prefer to have coffee during the meal. If you are present at a formal dinner, you might be confused to find many forks, knives and spoons put before you. You might be lost as to what to do with them. But don’t worry. There’s a simple rule. You just use them in the order in which they lie—working from the outside in.

W: Yeah, I’ve already made some shapes to put on. Look. I think I’ll brush the top with some egg mixture, too — then it’ll be nice and golden once it’s baked!

【原文】
W: National Hugging Day started on January 21, 1986. The Reverend Kevin Zaborney from the USA created the event to promote the emotional benefits of hugging. In America, National Hugging Day is big in schools, nursing homes and hospitals. It is a wonderful way of letting people know how you feel about them and of showing your care. A word of advice — ask before you hug!
There is a lot of research that shows hugging is good for us. Dr. Jay Gordon wrote a book called ‘Brighter Baby’, which said hugging a child every day may enhance a child’s intellectual development. Unlike kissing, hugging is acceptable in most societies. It can be a form of greeting between friends, a way of celebrating a victory, or a way of showing your support for someone. Hugging also takes place in the animal world. Monkeys are very fond of a hug to show their friendship. We even see the Teletubbies TV characters showing off their hugging skills as they give each other a “big hug”.

For many of them, it was the first time that behaviors similar to self-medication had been observed. More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other’s fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back parasites

Dear Mike,
How is everything going I’m delighted to hear from you. I’m writing to tell you what subjects I’ll choose in my second year of high school. I intend to choose history, biology and chemistry. First, as a fan of historical events, I wouldn’t miss any chance to learn more about history. Also, biology is always appealing to me because of many interesting experiments, and I’m confident I’ll do well in biology. Although chemistry is known as a most challenging subject, it’s also a subject widely applied to many fields. It is believed that interest is the best teacher.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Then I announced to Ruth, “Let’s start our birthday party!” Hearing what I said, Ruth ceased sobbing with a little disbelief. When I handed her the mirror-brush-and-comb set as her birthday present, Ruth’s eyes widened in surprise, and a warm smile gradually spread across her face. While I was singing Happy Birthday to her, Ruth closed her eyes towards the sparking candles and made a wish for her and her family. Delighted and excited, we shared the cake and the homemade fudge. Soon we were laughing and playing games, immersed in the ocean of happiness. It was not until Momma came to pick me up that I reluctantly said goodbye to Ruth.
Showing Momma my prizes, I shared my experience at Ruth’s house with her. “It sounds like you had a great time.” said Momma in a quiet voice, indicating she’d discovered everything, including the fact that I was exactly the only guest. Momma put her hand on my shoulder and said with expectant eyes, “Well, you know what you should do next.” On the school day, I gave all my prizes to my classmates, saying that they were Ruth’s gifts. So surprised and regretful were they that they surrounded Ruth and apologized to her for their absence from her birthday party. Ruth hugged me tightly and we became the sweetest friends.
