I was surprised to find the congestion (拥塞) outside Layla’s primary school was unusually absent—I’d driven right into a parking space, and I was on time, for once. The school bell rang, and in a moment a stream of children made their way through the gate. But something was different—the kids were piling into vehicles in threes and fours.
Before I could enquire my daughter Layla, Mr Trent, the deputy head, approached. “Mrs Pavis, did you not read our letter ” Letter What letter I had a history of not looking out for them, and not reading them in most cases. “The letter Of course. It must have just slipped my mind—I’ve been away with work.”
Now I was digging around in Layla’s messy schoolbag at home. Eventually, I found several letters, all addressing the same topic—parking outside the school gates. Apparently with some parents parking illegally, the police were about to get involved. “Why didn’t you give me these letters ” I demanded. Layla shrugged. “I forgot.” I was about to launch into a severe lecture when it occurred to me that I had always forgotten—I had forgotten to give Layla her money for cookery that morning and forgotten to hang out the kids’ washed clothes.
I contained myself and figured out that they wanted the parents to car-pool (拼车). I spent the next half hour ringing round Layla’s friends’ parents, enquiring if they would like to car-pool with us. Unfortunately, they were all sorted. It was my own fault—I should have read those letters ages ago. “Er... I overheard others talking about it,” Layla said, “They said they didn’t know who would car-pool with us, because we’re always late.” I flushed instantly. We were a disorganised family, and I was the one to blame.
I resolved to change. With responsibility for my kids, I find I am never, ever late. It’s good for Layla and for her older brothers, and it’s good for me, because now I never leave the house unprepared. I’ve even started checking the kids’ schoolbags for notes from school.
24. What did the author notice when the school was over
A. It was hard to find a parking space. B. Children were picked up in groups.
C. Her daughter was absent from class. D. She arrived much earlier than others.
25. What stopped the author criticizing her daughter
A. The reflection of her daily routine. B. The realization of her carelessness.
C. The knowledge of her kid’s character. D. The awareness of her kid’s depression.
26. Why did others refuse to car-pool with them according to Layla
A. Because they contacted them late. B. Because they failed to keep the house tidy.
C. Because they couldn’t be on time. D. Because they ignored the school’s request.
27. What can we learn from the passage
A. Action creates motivation. B. Mother’s love never changes.
C. It’s never too late to mend. D. Patience is the key to success.

In July 1915, sick James Murray, one of the early editors of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), defined one final word. He had devoted 36 years to the dictionary. Knowing he would not see the project complete, he wrote his last entry: for “twilight”.
The story of Murray’s final days is one of many memorable tales in “The Dictionary People”. Conceived (构思) in 1857, the OED was a huge crowdsourcing project comprising 3,000 people. The idea was to create a “descriptive” dictionary that tracked words’ use and meaning over time. Volunteers read widely, mailing in examples of how “rare, old-fashioned, new” words were used. What is surprising about this random method is that it worked, achieving order through the large number of contributors.
The origin story of Sarah Ogilvie’s book is almost as improbable as that of the dictionary itself. Ms Ogilvie, an editor for the OED, went into the archives (档案馆) of Oxford University Press and came across an old notebook. It had belonged to Murray and contained the names and details of the dictionary volunteers, most of whom had previously been unknown. “The Dictionary People” is her work of detective scholarship, presenting the lives behind the names.
The dictionary’s contributors are an engaging cast, including one of Karl Marx’s daughters and J. R. R. Tolkien. For some, the dictionary was something addictive: one contributor supplied 165,061 quotations. Murray, too, was assiduous. He once wrote to George Eliot to ask about a word choice in “Romola”, published 17 years earlier.
Ms Ogilvie’s book is full of strange but interesting tales. Many dictionary lovers engaged in another crowdsourcing fashion: collecting and measuring rainwater. The presentation of the book is irregular, too, taking its structure from the work it describes. For example, in her first chapter, “A for Archaeologist (考古学家),” she relates the early life of Margaret A. Murray, a pioneering Egyptologist. There are 26 alphabetical (按字母顺序排列的) chapters, each celebrating a group of contributors. This is a clever concept.
28. What did the OED’s volunteers do
A. They deleted the words going out of use.
B. They listed instances of changes in word use.
C. They corrected the misuse of common words.
D. They added new words to keep up with the times.
29. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about “The Dictionary People”
A. What Ogilvie achieved with it. B. How Ogilvie told the stories in it.
C. What inspired Ogilvie to write it. D. Who helped Ogilvie to complete it.
30. What does the underlined word “assiduous” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Hard-working. B. Easy-going. C. Energetic. D. Flexible.
31. What does the author think of Ms Ogilvie’s book
A. Interesting and creative. B. Encouraging and influential.
C. Traditional and funny. D. Descriptive and surprising.

Digital mindfulness is the application of mindfulness practices in your digital life. According to Jon Kabat Zinn, a professor at the University of Massachusetts Medicine School, mindfulness is “a means of paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and non judgmentally”. Here two main key points are emphasized when it comes to mindfulness as a practice in your digital life.
The first point is that you must learn to do things on purpose. For instance, you use your phone as a habitual escape from boredom or stress, which is thought by many as a quick solution to all those negative feelings. But what if you get only negative responses from your phone—the news or posts are negative Instead of finding peace, you find more boredom and more stress. The solution that mindfulness provides is purposeful and intentional choice. Therefore, you are empowered to choose how to respond to the stimulus(刺激) behind such feelings as boredom, loneliness, and stress and not just treat the symptoms(症状).
The other key is going through the experience non judgmentally. When you feel sad or angry because of a post on social media, all you ever do is to go through the experience and let it flow. At its core, mindfulness involves the acceptance of your memories, feelings, and thoughts minus any judgment on yourself or others because of those things. These feelings, memories, and experiences come and go. After they have passed, you are still you and in control. You will become more aware of your inner world. It’s this internal monologue(独白) that pushes you to grab your digital technology (phone, Alexa speaker, TV, etc.).
Digital mindfulness is not about avoiding the negative things in life. Through mindfulness practice, you regain the power to learn from these experiences and healthily deal with the negative. Mindfulness will also teach you to be aware of all your emotions, so you learn to deal with the things that you used to avoid. Finally, digital mindfulness brings you peace of mind in an ever changing and increasingly connected world.
Now, I would rather prefer to think of it as one of many tools that we can use in our daily life.
32. What does the author suggest readers do when they feel stressed in their digital life
A. Find something interesting to do.
B. Use the phone as a habitual escape.
C. Keep away from the negative responses.
D. Deal with the root cause of the problem.
33. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. Negative feelings should be avoided or controlled.
B. Mindfulness involves both acceptance and judgment.
C. Mindfulness helps us fully experience life as it happens.
D. Digital technology is the key to understanding our inner world.
34. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. How Can You Avoid Negative Feelings
B. How Can You Define Digital Mindfulness
C. How Can Digital Mindfulness Help You
D. How Can Digital Mindfulness Harm You
35. What will probably be discussed in the next paragraph
A. Applications of mindfulness in communication.
B. Ways of practising mindfulness in the digital age.
C. Development of mindfulness in medical field.
D. Benefits of practising digital mindfulness in daily life.

Vertical (垂直的) farming involves using vertically piled layers and other innovative resources to help your crops grow. 36 You get to grow your plants while using the small space at home. Below are some benefits of vertical farming for small house owners.
Reduce water usage. Watering a vertical garden is easy, simple, and uses less water. If your plants are grown in a traditional way, you’ll need lots of water to keep up with your plants’ growth. 37
Save space. As a small, house owner, space is a big concern. However, vertical farming ensures that you can create a garden in your home and fully enjoy the experience. 38 So, if you aim to save space in your home and still have a garden, vertical farming is perfect.
39 Vertical farming is mainly done indoors and entirely depends on you to provide the best conditions. With commitment, you can continuously ensure consistent food production despite the seasons.
Cut down on chemicals and pesticides. Vertical gardens will not require you to invest in pesticides and chemical fertilizers to keep your plants alive. In addition, insects will not have easy access to your plants since you’ll be gardening in a controlled environment. 40
A. Increase food production.
B. Produce food consistently.
C. Having a garden means you need to work with the space available.
D. It comes in handy without causing any inconvenience to your living arrangements.
E. However, if you invest in vertical farming, your water usage will dramatically drop.
F. So the food grown is organic and safe for consumption making it an excellent choice.

Thomas, a skinny young boy, loved football with all his heart. Practice after practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But being half the size of the other boys, he got absolutely nowhere. At all the games, this hopeful athlete sat on the bench (板凳) and hardly ever played.
This teenager lived alone with his father, and the relationship between the two of them was very special. Even though the son was always on the bench, his father was always in the stands cheering. He never missed a game.
This young man was still the smallest of the class when he entered high school. But his father continued to encourage him. All through high school he never missed a practice nor a game but remained a benchwarmer. Besides, his faithful father was always in the stands, always with word of encouragement for him. The young man loved football and was determined to hang in there, and perhaps he’d get to play when he became a senior.
It was at the end of his senior football season and as he ran to the practice field shortly before the big playoff (夺标决赛) that the coach met him with a telegram(电报). The young man read the telegram and he became deathly silent: Biting his lip, he breathed, “My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today ” The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, “Take the rest of the week off, son. And don’t even plan to come back to the game on Saturday.”
Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In the second half when the team was two scores behind, a silent young man quietly slipped into the empty locker room and put on his football wear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach and his players were surprised to see their faithful teammate back so soon.

B 25. B 26. C 27. C

B 29. C 30. A 31. A
根据第二段中“Conceived (构思) in 1857, the OED was a huge crowdsourcing project comprising 3,000 people. The idea was to create a “descriptive” dictionary that tracked words’ use and meaning over time. (《牛津英语词典》诞生于1857年,是一个由3000人组成的庞大众包项目。当时的想法是创建一本“描述性”词典,追踪单词的使用和含义。)”可知,牛津英语词典的志愿者广泛阅读,寄来单词用法的例子,目的是追踪单词的使用和意义变化。故选B。
29. 推理判断题。根据第三段中“The origin story of Sarah Ogilvie’s book is almost as improbable as that of the dictionary itself. (Sarah Ogilvie这本书的起源故事几乎和字典本身的故事一样难以置信。)”以及“Ms Ogilvie, an editor for the OED, went into the archives (档案馆) of Oxford University Press and came across an old notebook. It had belonged to Murray and contained the names and details of the dictionary volunteers, most of whom had previously been unknown. (Ogilvie女士是《牛津英语词典》的编辑,她走进牛津大学出版社的档案室,偶然发现了一本旧笔记本。它属于Murray,里面有词典志愿者的名字和详细信息,其中大多数人以前都不为人知。)”可知,Ogilvie在牛津大学出版社的档案中发现了Murray的旧笔记本,其中记录了字典志愿者的姓名和详情。因此本段主要描述了Ogilvie写作《The Dictionary People》的灵感来源。故选C。
30. 词义猜测题。根据划线词前面的内容“For some, the dictionary was something addictive: one contributor supplied 165,061 quotations. (对于一些人来说,词典是一种令人上瘾的东西:一名贡献者提供了165,061条引用。)”以及后面的内容“He once wrote to George Eliot to ask about a word choice in “Romola”, published 17 years earlier.( 他曾经写信给George Eliot询问她17年前发表的《Romola》中的一个词的选择问题。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段中“Ms Ogilvie’s book is full of strange but interesting tales. (Ms Ogilvie女士的书中充满了奇怪但有趣的故事)”,“The presentation of the book is irregular, too, taking its structure from the work it describes.(这本书的呈现也是不规则的,它的结构来自于它所描述的工作)”以及“There are 26 alphabetical (按字母顺序排列的) chapters, each celebrating a group of contributors. This is a clever concept.(全书有26个按字母顺序排列的章节,每个章节都颂扬一群贡献者。这是一个聪明的想法)”可知,最后一段提到这本书的内容奇特而有趣,结构也颇为独特,按字母顺序排列了26章,每一章都展示了一组贡献者。这个“聪明”的概念显示了作者对该书的赞赏。A选项“Interesting and creative.(有趣又有创意)”符合作者的观点。故选A。

D 33. C 34. C 35. B
根据第二段中的“The solution that mindfulness provides is purposeful and intentional choice. Therefore, you are empowered to choose how to respond to the stimulus(刺激) behind such feelings as boredom, loneliness, and stress and not just treat the symptoms(症状).(正念提供的解决方案是有目的和有意的选择。因此,你有权选择如何应对无聊、孤独和压力等情绪背后的刺激因素,而不仅仅是治疗症状。)”可知,作者建议在面对无聊、孤独和压力等情绪时,要应对其背后的根源,而不仅仅是治疗症状。故选D。
33. 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“The other key is going through the experience nonjudgmentally. When you feel sad or angry because of a post on social media, all you ever do is to go through the experience and let it flow. (另一个关键是不带偏见地体验。当你因为社交媒体上的一条帖子而感到悲伤或愤怒时,你所做的就是经历这段经历,让它顺其自然。)”和第三段中的“These feelings, memories, and experiences come and go. After they have passed, you are still you and in control. You will become more aware of your inner world.(这些感受、记忆和经历来来往往。在它们过去之后,你仍然是你自己,并处于控制之中。你会更加了解自己的内心世界。)”可推测出,在进行正念练习时,要不带偏见地体验,顺其自然地经历这段经历,不让感受、记忆和经历控制自己,保持自我,由此可推测出,正念能够帮助我们顺其自然地充分体验生活。故选C。
34. 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段最后一句“Here two main key points are emphasized when it comes to mindfulness as a practice in your digital life.(当谈到正念作为数字生活中的一种练习时,这里强调了两个主要要点。)”
根据最后一段“Now, I would rather prefer to think of it as one of many tools that we can use in our daily life.(现在,我更愿意把它看作是我们日常生活中可以使用的众多工具之一。)”

A First Aid Experience
Last Sunday Tom’s left foot got injured on our way to climbing a hill and he was in desperate need of help.
Facing it, I dialed 120 without delay and performed first aid before the doctors came instead of getting into a panic. Having put his left foot in a comfortable position, I rushed to a shop to buy bags of ice, carefully applying the ice to the swelling to ease the pain. Eventually, I wrapped the injury loosely with a clean and dry bandage. Ten minutes later, an ambulance arrived and took Tom to the hospital.
Only then was I aware of what a difference a basic knowledge of first aid could make, especially in such a case.

“Coach, please let me play. I’ve just got to play today,” said the young man. He held out the telegram, tears glistening in his eyes. The coach took the telegram and read it silently, his expression softening with understanding. He nodded slowly, realizing the significance of this moment for the young man. “You go out there and play your heart out, son,” the coach replied, placing a reassuring hand on the young man’s shoulder. “Your father would’ve wanted that.” With a determined nod, the young man wiped away his tears and headed onto the field, ready to honor his father’s memory in the best way he knew how.
This little unknown, who had never played before, was doing everything right. As the game progressed, the young man seemed to be everywhere at once, chasing down opponents, making crucial tackles, and even intercepting a pass. His teammates watched in awe as he transformed into a powerhouse on the field, his father’s spirit seemingly guiding every move he made. With each play, he honored not just his father’s memory, but also his own unwavering determination to never give up.
