About a decade ago, Lawson was at a beach in Virginia watching his kids build castles right next to the waves.
“I kept trying to get them to come back because I thought it was a terrible idea,” he remarked. He wanted them to build their sandcastles closer to the dunes. But they found it more exciting to build right where the waves hit, seeing their sandcastles get destroyed, and then rebuilding them with whatever debris washed up from the ocean. “It seemed so symbolic, somehow, of how life works more than just building your perfect sandcastles,” said Lawson. When he decided to turn that sunny day into a children’s book, the idea came to just use pictures. “It seemed like it would work beautifully without words,” he said.
A Day for Sandcastles is illustrated by Qin Leng. It’s the second wordless picture book for Lawson and Leng since 2021’s Over the Shop. Leng’s illustrations stay pretty true to real life. Three siblings spend the day building sandcastles and watching them get destroyed by a flying hat. “To me it’s a celebration of childhood and the simple joys of life. These are the things I like to capture,” said Leng.
Leng spent part of her childhood in France, and she was inspired by European comic books. “What I love to do when I illustrate a picture book is add side stories to the main storyline. I always think about the readers and the longevity of the book, and I want them to be able to discover something new every time they revisit the book,” Leng explained.
At the end of the day, the sleepy-eyed kids pile into the bus that will take them home. “Those last pages are some of my favorite. They capture that feeling like at the end of the day on the beach, when it’s getting dark and you feel completely exhausted,” Lawson said. It must be a universal childhood feeling: happy with sand, sticky from the salt, hot from the sun, and ready to fall asleep the moment you get into the car.
24.Why does Lawson mention the scene where the kids built sandcastles
A.To suggest a way to enjoy leisure. B.To remind readers of the childhood.
C.To convince us of how life works. D.To tell us the inspiration for his book.
25.What do you know about the two books mentioned
A.They are purchased by kids universally. B.Readers can only find pictures in them.
C.They carry no elements of comic books. D.The stories are literally works of fantasy.
26.How does Lawson feel when telling us the last pages in the last paragraph
A.Relieved. B.Pleased. C.Disturbed. D.Exhausted.
27.What can be a suitable title for the passage
A.Childhood in sandcastles B.Beautiful childhood memories
C.Popular illustrated books D.Explore the mystery of nature

The streets, sidewalks and roofs of cities all absorb heat during the day, making some urban areas across the United States up to 6 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than rural ones during the day—and 22 degrees F hotter at night. These “urban heat islands” can also develop underground as the city heat spreads downward, beneath the surface. And basements, subway tunnels and other underground infrastructure also constantly bleed heat into the surrounding earth, creating hotspots. Now the underground heat is building up as the planet warms.
According to a new study of downtown Chicago, underground hotspots may threaten the very same structures that emit the heat in the first place. Such temperature changes make the ground around them expand and contract (收缩) enough to cause potential damage. “Without anyone realizing it, the city of Chicago’s downtown was deforming,” says the study’s author Alessandro F. Rotta Loria, a civil and environmental engineer at Northwestern University.
The findings, published in Communications Engineering, expose a “silent hazard (危险)” to civil infrastructure in cities with soft er ground — especially those near water — Rotta Loria says. “There might have been structural issues caused by this underground climate change that happened, and we didn’t even realize,” he adds. While not an immediate or direct danger to human lives, this previously unknown effect highlights the impacts of a lesser-known component of climate change.
Similar to climate change above the surface, these underground changes occur over long periods of time. “These effects took decades, a century, to develop,” Rotta Loria says, adding that elevated underground temperatures would likewise take a long time to dissipate (逐渐消失) on their own.
But other researchers interviewed for this story all say this wasted energy could also be recycled, presenting an opportunity to both cool the subsurface and save on energy costs. Subway tunnels and basements could be updated with technologies to recapture the heat. For example, water pipes could be installed to run through underground hotspots and pick up some of the heat energy.
28.What can we learn about the “urban heat islands”
A.They can develop underground structures.
B.They are impacted by global warming.
C.They can destroy the ground around.
D.They only exist in the United States.
29.Why does Alessandro F. Rotta Loria mention “silent hazard” in paragraph 3
A.To discuss structural issues.
B.To categorize climate change.
C.To explain underground heat.
D.To emphasize the neglected reality.
30.What will the author probably write about in the paragraph that follows
A.The future of tunnels and basements.
B.The reusing approaches of heat energy.
C.The cost of maintaining structures.
D.The evolution of underground environment.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Warming Underground, Weakening Surface
B.A Silver Lining of Global Warming
C.Urban Silent Islands in the Making
D.A Silent Crisis in Downtown Chicago

Scientists have discovered a new and renewable source of water on the moon for future explorers in lunar samples from a Chinese mission.
Water was stored in tiny glass beads (珠子) in the lunar dirt where meteorite (陨石) impacts occur. These shiny, multicolored glass beads were in samples returned from the moon by China in 2020. The beads range in size from the width of one hair to several hairs; the water content was just a very small part of that, according to Hui HeJiu of Nanjing University, who took part in the study.
Since there are billions if not trillions of these impact beads, that could amount to substantial amounts of water, but mining it would be tough, according to the team. “Yes, it will require lots and lots of glass beads. There are lots and lots of beads on the moon,” said Hui in an email.
“These beads could continually yield water thanks to the constant bombardment by hydrogen in the solar wind. The findings are based on 32 glass beads randomly selected from lunar dirt returned from the Chang’e 5 moon mission. Therefore, more samples will be studied,” said Hui.
These impact beads are everywhere, the result of the cooling of melted material pushed out by incoming space rocks. Water could be got by heating the beads, possibly by future robotic missions. “More studies are needed to determine whether this would be feasible and, if so, whether the water would be safe to drink. This shows water can be recharged on the moon’s surface… a new water reservoir on the moon,” said Hui.
Previous studies found water in glass beads formed by lunar volcanic activities, based on samples returned by the Apollo moonwalkers more than a half-century ago. These, too, could provide water not only for use by future crews, but for rocket fuel.
32.Why is it challenging to mine water from the glass beads on the moon
A.The water content in the beads is very small. B.The temperature of the beads is too high.
C.The beads are too hard to break. D.The beads are too small to see.
33.Why do glass beads keep producing water
A.Because of the impact of meteorite. B.Because of glass beads being heated.
C.Because of too many glass beads on the moon. D.Because of constant hydrogen from the solar wind.
34.What does Hui want to convey in paragraph 5
A.Water on the moon is stored in a reservoir.
B.Explorers can get water on the moon in the future.
C.Water on the moon should be used to produce electricity.
D.Explorers need to do more studies for water on the moon.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Glass Beads Will Be Used To Store Water B.Water Has Been Found In Lunar Glass Beads
C.Scientists Did Research On Water On The Moon D.China Successfully Took Samples From The Moon

It was a cold December. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own. My father had drowned in Pitt Lake five years earlier. Because Dad had no pension or benefits, there was not much money; we went on social assistance.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through a sending us kids to school. Every morning she would tuck a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our soles(鞋底) were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. This was bread deep-fried in lard(猪油). Constant moving was typical for my family in those days, and it didn’t look like we’d be in our current house much longer. Rent was $25 a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be forced out after Christmas.
The holidays were fast approaching, and we were entitled to $25 for Christmas from social services. An inspector came to our house and search edit thoroughly to be sure we didn’t have any food hidden away. When he didn’t find any, he issued the cheque to Mum. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our rent. That way we’d have a roof over our heads for a little while longer. Then she told us there would be no Christmas gifts.
Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling snow and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots—boots with no cardboard in the soles. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine, and cost $23.
The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the road to catch the bus into town. But on the way to the bus stop I noticed da house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized that we had no lights, no decorations and no Christmas goodies. I also knew we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas dinner. But at least there would be French toast.

【答案】18.B 19.C 20.C
M: Good morning, everyone. Welcome to our park. The subject of my talk today is this strange- looking tree that you see here in front of you. It is known as the bottle tree in some parts of the world. We prefer to call it by its more common name—the baobab. The baobab survives by storing water inside its trunk. The trunk can swell up enormously, and store up to 120,000 liters of water. You can see in this tree how the trunk is really fat and shaped like a bottle. Baobabs generally can reach heights of about 30 metres but this one, at 15 metre, is just a baby by comparison. Baobabs had been used as shops in the past. Nowadays, however, a baobab is often used as a bus shelter because it provides shade when it’s sunny and protection when it rains! This amazing tree has another name—the Tree of Life, and when you think how it can create a complete ecosystem, supporting the life of many animals, you understand why. Then think of the many ways humans use this tree. Yes, I think this is the best name of all: the Tree of Life. Does anybody have any questions

【答案】24.D 25.B 26.B 27.A
根据第二段中的“ But they found it more exciting to build right where the waves hit, seeing their sandcastles get destroyed, and then rebuilding them with whatever debris washed up from the ocean. “It seemed so symbolic, somehow, of how life works more than just building your perfect sandcastles,” said Lawson. When he decided to turn that sunny day into a children’s book, the idea came to just use pictures.(但他们发现在海浪袭来的地方建造更令人兴奋,看着他们的沙堡被摧毁,然后用从海洋冲上来的任何碎片重建它们。劳森说:“从某种程度上说,这似乎很有象征意义,说明生活不仅仅是建造完美的沙堡。”当他决定把那个阳光明媚的日子写成一本儿童读物时,他想到了只用图片。)”可推测出,孩子们建造沙煲的场景是他写书的灵感来源。故选D。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“A Day for Sandcastles is illustrated by Qin Leng. It’s the second wordless picture book for Lawson and Leng since 2021’s Over the Shop. (《A Day for Sandcastles》由冷琴插图。这是自2021年的《Over the Shop》以来,Lawson和冷的第二本无字绘本。)”可知,这两本书都是无字绘本,读者只能在里面找到图片。故选B。
26.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“‘Those last pages are some of my favorite. They capture that feeling like at the end of the day on the beach, when it’s getting dark and you feel completely exhausted,’ Lawson said. It must be a universal childhood feeling: happy with sand, sticky from the salt, hot from the sun, and ready to fall asleep the moment you get into the car.(Lawson说:‘最后几页是我最喜欢的。
全文围绕《A Day for Sandcastles》展开,这是一本描述孩子们在沙滩上建造城堡的无字绘本,再根据第三段中的“To me it’s a celebration of childhood and the simple joys of life.(对我来说,这是对童年和简单生活乐趣的庆祝。)” 故选A。

【答案】28.B 29.D 30.B 31.A
根据第一段最后一句话“Now the underground heat is building up as the planet warms. (现在随着地球变暖,地下热量正在积聚)”可知,“城市热岛”是受到全球气候变暖的影响。故选B。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段中 Alessandro F. Rotta Loria所说的““There might have been structural issues caused by this underground climate change that happened, and we didn’t even realize(发生的这种地下气候变化可能已经造成了建筑结构上的问题,我们甚至没有意识到)”以及最后一句话“While not an immediate or direct danger to human lives, this previously unknown effect highlights the impacts of a lesser-known component of climate change.(虽然这不是对人类生命的直接或直接威胁,但这种以前未知的影响突显了气候变化中一个鲜为人知的组成部分的影响)”可推知,提出“无声的危险”是想强调地下气候变暖这一被人忽略的事实。故选D。
根据第五段“But other researchers interviewed for this story all say this wasted energy could also be recycled, presenting an opportunity to both cool the subsurface and save on energy costs. Subway tunnels and basements could be updated with technologies to recapture the heat. For example, water pipes could be installed to run through underground hotspots and pick up some of the heat energy.(但接受采访的其他研究人员都表示,这些浪费的能源也可以回收利用,这为冷却地下和节省能源成本提供了机会。
故选A。

How to Plan a Surprise Party
●Pick a party theme. 36 They may come up wearing crazy clothes, see everyone else’s, and you will get the chance to use your creativity when it comes to decorations, prizes, and activities. The best part It can be anything: cartoon-themed, colour-themed or costume-themed.
●Pick a place your guests of honour frequents to avoid suspicion (怀疑). If you tell your party-persons that you’re heading to the nicest restaurant in town, they’ll know that there’s an occasion. However, if you tell them that you’re heading to the same restaurant you go to every Thursday night, suspicion will be kept at a minimum. 37
●Pick a date before the actual occasion. If this surprise party is for a birthday, holding a party on the day might be a little hard to turn into an awesome surprise. 38 Besides, choose a date when all of their friends are able to go.
●Choose your guests. 39 Here’s what to consider:
A small group. This is easier to manage, people can keep their mouths shut, and it creates a more warm environment. However, it’s less impressive and more people might be upset that they’re not invited.
A large group. This is harder to manage, the word might slip out, it’s harder to get a space, but in the end, your party-persons might be surprised by seeing everyone they love in one room.
● 40 There are three types of people in this world: those that don’t like surprise parties because they always want to be prepared, those that don’t like surprise parties because they think they’re being forgotten, and those that love a good surprise party in their honour. Make sure your party-persons fall into the third category!
A.So choose a place that seems “normal”.
B.It isn’t much better if something emergent happens.
C.To avoid that, plan something before the actual date.
D.Be sure your guests of honour would want a surprise party.
E.You have two options: a small gathering or a big get-together.
