Typhoons (台风) and hurricanes (飓风) are both strong winds, but they happen in different places and have different names. Typhoons happen in the Western North Pacific (太平洋),including the South China Sea. However, in the Atlantic, ■ astern North Pacific, these strong winds are called hurricanes. The naming of typhoons began in the early 20th century. An Australian forecaster (天气预报) named typhoons for the first time with a man’s name. These years, people from different countries give typhoons names. They use the names of things like animals, plants, and food, or they might use other special words. For example, you might hear of a typhoon named “Yutu” or “Wukong.”
These names are chosen by people from 14 countries, including China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Japan. There is a list of 140 different names for typhoons, and they use these names over and over again. However, if a typhoon causes very bad thin, the 14 countries can ask to remove that name from the list. For example, China’s “Longwang” and “Haiyan” caused a lot of problems, so they took those names away. This means those names won’t be used anymore.
