“Our temperature’s not what people think it is,” said Julie Parsonnet, MD, professor of medicine and of health research and policy in Stanford. “or our common sense that our normal temperature is 37℃or 98.6 F, is wrong.”
That standard of 37℃was made famous by German doctor Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich in a book in 1868. Modern studies, however, have called that number into question, suggesting that it’s too high.
In a latest study published in eLife, Parsonnet and her colleagues explore body temperature trends and conclude that temperature changes since the time of Wunderlich reflect a true historical pattern, rather than measurement errors or biases (偏见). The researchers propose that the decrease in body temperature is the result of changes in our environment over the past 200 years, which have in turn driven physiological changes.
The researchers analyzed temperatures from three officially-recorded datasets covering different historical periods, using the 677,423 temperature measurements from these datasets to develop a linear model (线性模型) containing the temperatures over time. They determined that the body temperature of men born in the early to mid-1990s is on average 1.06 F lower than that of men born in the early 1800s. Similarly, they determined that the body temperature of women born in the early to mid-1990s is on average 0.58 F lower than that of women born in the 1890s. These calculations match a decrease in body temperature of 0.05 F every 10 years.
The decrease in average body temperature in the US could be explained by a reduction in the amount of energy being used. The authors believe this trend may be due to a population-wide decrease in inflammation (炎症): “Inflammation produces all sorts of proteins and cytokines that speed up your metabolism (新陈代谢) and raise your temperature,” Parsonnet said. Public health has improved sharply in the past 200 years due to advances in medical treatments, more convenient environment, greater availability of food and improved living standards. The authors also argue that comfortable lives at constant surrounding temperature contribute to a lower metabolic rate. Homes in the 19th century had irregular heating and no cooling; today, central heating and air conditioning are commonplace. A more constant environment removes a need to expend energy to keep a constant body temperature.
28. What does the underlined phrase “call ... into question” in Paragraph 2 mean

A survey by the Kennel Club has found almost one in five would rather have a dog than be in a relationship.
The research, which asked 2,612 dog owners for their thoughts on romance, found just under a quarter agreed that having a dog would make them feel less concerned about not being in love.
Perhaps the findings are unsurprising, as celebrities have long used dogs as their plus-ones. Hollywood legend Glenn Close took her Havanese dog Pip to the Oscars last year, describing her pet as “the best date a girl can have”. Jennifer Aniston has credited her dogs and female friends with making her happy, stating: “I’ve had more fun post-40 than I can remember.”
Bill Lambert, a spokesman for the Kennel Club, said: “There certainly seems to be a growing number of dog-lovers who would rather share their lives with a four-legged friend instead of a human partner. This could be due to the many benefits that come with dog ownership — from the psychological to the physical. Dogs help their owners relax, whether that’s with a daily walk in fresh air, or with a cuddle (依偎) on a sofa. They can also be great listeners, help their owners fight stress, and can play a part in improving the health and fitness of their two-legged owners.”
Nevertheless, for those dog owners who are still looking for love, the research suggests their pet might help.
More than a fifth of those questioned said they had been asked out on a date or found love while out with their dog, with beagles, springer spaniels and German Shepherds appearing best for attracting a potential partner. People who owned golden retrievers and corgis were also very likely to say their pet may have helped them out romantically.
Mr Lambert said: “This is quite unsurprising when you consider that dogs are a great ice-breaker, when strangers may otherwise not look twice at each other, and that we tend to have very positive associations about people who love dogs.”
Among those responding to the survey, 21 percent said they were more likely to date someone who also had a dog.
32. How would a single with a dog react when asked for their opinion of love
A. Behave like a cat on hot bricks. B. Stay calm or even a little carefree.
C. Feel quite worried about being single. D. Still be hopeful about love and marriage.
33. Why does the author mention the celebrities in Paragraph 3
A. To tell us some romantic stories about them.
B. To show that the result of the research is true.
C. To persuade us to follow these people’s example.
D. To give us some tips on how to be in a relationship.
34. According to Bill Lambert, why do many people tend to live with dogs
A. Because of the advice given by their doctors.
B. Because the dogs can remind them of somebody.
C. Because they can’t find their true love in reality.
D. Because of the good their dogs bring to their life.
35. What can you do if you are to find your likely partner
A. Learn some basic knowledge about dogs.
B. Set up a homeless dog shelter on your own.
C. Bring some dog food with you in the street.
D. Walk your beagle in the park after supper.

The library was typically so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. But on this Wednesday afternoon, there was a roar of laughter that spread through the halls. It was coming from a table in the back. Books were piled so high that one could barely see the source of all the noise. Brian and Josie were hiding behind the mountain of history texts, their faces bright red from laughing.
Mrs Cane, the librarian, followed the laughter and then approached the table. As she cleared her throat and looked over the piles of books, Brian and Josie looked up to meet her gaze. Mrs Cane looked at the books, then at the kids. “And what is it you two are supposed to be working on ”
Brian hesitated a moment, and then answered, “We’re working on a paper for our history class.”
“I see,” Mrs Cane said harshly. “Perhaps one of the private reading rooms would be a better place for you to concentrate and study. Quietly.”
The kids collected their books and their backpacks and followed Mrs Cane down a long hallway until they got to a dark row of doors. Mrs Cane pulled out a ring of keys from her pocket and unlocked a door. She turned on the light, which shone brightly overhead. The kids placed their books on the dusty table and reluctantly (不情愿地) climbed into the chairs. Brian and Josie shrugged (耸肩) and opened their books, finally focusing on the project at hand.
Time was ticking away. After what seemed like hours, Brian and Josie decided to take a break and when Josie opened the door of the room, Brian’s eyes opened wide. The library was completely dark. Looking at his watch, he let out a gasp. “It’s 9:30! The library closed an hour ago!”
Paragraph 1:
Brian looked through his backpack for his cellphone.

根据第四段最后两句“Similarly, they determined that the body temperature of women born in the early to mid-1990s is on average 0.58 F lower than that of women born in the 1890s. These calculations match a decrease in body temperature of 0.05 F every 10 years.(同样,他们确定,20世纪90年代初至90年代中期出生的女性的体温平均比19世纪90年代出生的女性低0.58华氏度。这些计算结果与每10年体温下降0.05华氏度相符)”可知,与出生时的体温相比,女性55岁时的体温会降低0.05×5+0.025≈0.28,故选C项。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“The decrease in average body temperature in the US could be explained by a reduction in the amount of energy being used. The authors believe this trend may be due to a population-wide decrease in inflammation (炎症): “Inflammation produces all sorts of proteins and cytokines that speed up your metabolism (新陈代谢) and raise your temperature,” Parsonnet said. Homes in the 19th century had irregular heating and no cooling; today, central heating and air conditioning are commonplace. A more constant environment removes a need to expend energy to keep a constant body temperature.(美国人平均体温的下降可以用能量消耗的减少来解释。
故选A项。

Last Friday, a heavy snowstorm hit our city, posing a potential safety risk for citizens. In response, our class launched a volunteer activity right away to clear the snow in the street.
At 5:30 after school, our classmates set out to clear the heavy snow in teams. The cold air was filled with laughter and chatter as we worked together tirelessly, forming a heartwarming scene. Our efforts didn’t go unnoticed. Passersby never failed to offer words of encouragement and gratitude, which in turn fueled our motivation, making the task seem less difficult.
It was through our efforts that we not only cleared the paths and ensured everyone’s safety but also strengthened our unity, reflecting the spirit of responsibility as well.

【答案】Paragraph 1
Brian looked through his backpack for his cellphone. Unfortunately, there was no cellphone inside. “I left my phone at home so we can not call anyone for help!” Brian cried out, and looked at Josie anxiously. Josie turned back, “Calm down, Brian. I remember seeing a telephone at the entrance to the library, maybe we can reach Mrs Cane on the telephone.” Then, in a hurry, Brian put the books into his backpack and left the room with Josie. It was dark outside, and the two kids tried to figure out where they should go. Slowly, they were inching towards the entrance, comforting each other.
Paragraph 2
They heard a noise that sounded like a telephone ringing. They felt their way in the darkness toward the sound, and found a telephone on the wall. Trembling with excitement, Brian answered the phone, and heard Mrs Cane’s voice on the line: “Sorry, Brian. I forgot you and Josie were in the library. Now I’m coming to get you guys out.” Hanging up the phone, Brian breathed a sigh of relief. Just in a second, Mrs Cane arrived. Excited and overjoyed, Mrs Cane rushed forward and hugged the kids tightly, praising their calmness. It was through this accidental experience that Brian and Josie learned there is always a way out when a problem arises.
