Do you know what birds use to build their nests You may say that birds usually build their nests with sticks, leaves or grass. But do you know that birds are also building their nests with rubbish these years The rubbish includes cigarette butts (烟头) and plastic bags.
A group of European scientists looked into about 35,000 studies on bird nests. They found that birds have used man-made things in nests almost everywhere on Earth except Antarotica. Some rubbish seems to be helpful. This is why birds “like” putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have special smell, so they can keep insects away and protect the baby birds. Plastic bags are useful in keeping the animals warm, and other hard things, such as paper cards, can make nests stronger.
However, in the end, human rubbish may only bring more harm to birds. The toxic (有毒的) chemicals in cigarettes hurt the baby birds. They may get sick or have shorter lives, according to a study. To make matters worse, if the cigarette still burns when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set fire to the nest. Pieces of fishing net may also trap birds, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves. If the baby birds eat other kinds of rubbish by accident, they will also get hurt. Our bird friends in the air are feeling the bad effects of humans polluting the environment.
24. How does the writer lead into the topic about bird’s nests in Paragraph 1
A. By telling a joke. B. By setting an example. C. By asking a question.
25. Which of the following things is NOT used by the birds to build their nests according to the text
A. Paper cards. B. Plastic bags. C. Wooden boards.
26. What does “it” refer to in Paragraph 3
A the cigarette. B. the bird C. the plastic bag
27. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The bad influence that human rubbish has on birds.
B. The harm that the environment brings to the wild animals.
C. The reason why birds like using rubbish to build their nests.
C
Scientists who study happiness have evidence (证据) to show that being kind to others can result in happiness. Acts as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can lift a person’s mood (情绪), for example, everyday life is full of chances for such actions, yet people do not always make the most use of them.
In studies, behavioral scientist Nicholas Epley and I examined a possible explanation: people who do kind acts underestimate (低估) how much the ones receiving kindness value their behavior.
In the experiments, about 1,000 people were asked to do some actions to make someone else feel good. We asked both the person performing the kind act and the one receiving it to answer some questions. The performers were asked to report their own experience and to guess how the receivers might feel. We wanted to understand how valuable people considered these acts to be, so both the performer and receiver had to rate (评分) how “big” the act seemed. In all cases, we compared the performer’s expectations of the receiver’s mood with the receiver’s actual experience.
For one, both performers and receivers experienced more positive moods. For another, the receivers felt much better than the kind performers expected. The receivers also rated these acts as “bigger” than the people performing them did.
At first, we studied acts of the kindness done for familiar people, such as friends, classmates or family. But we found that performers underestimated their positive influences on strangers as well. In one experiment, performers in a public park gave away hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day to people that just happened to be nearby. Again, the kind act brought more happiness than the performers expected.
These findings suggest that what might seem small could matter a great deal to the person we do it for. Considering these warm actions can improve our own mood and brighten the day of another person, why not choose kindness when we can
28. In the experiments, the performers did the following things EXCEPT that ________.
A. they reported their own experience
B. they rated how valuable their acts of kindness were
C. they compared the receivers’ expectations with their actual results
29. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about
A. Difference purposes of the research.
B. Another explanation of the research methods.
C. Possible influences of the research findings.
30. The studies and experiments show that ________.
A. kindness can have far more positive influences than expected
B. performing kindness produces as much happiness as expected
C. receiving kindness is more difficult than expected
31. The passage is probably written to ________.
A. introduce a successful study
B. encourage people to show kindness to others
C. call on people to be a receiver rather than a performer

第四部分 综合技能(共2节,满分25分)
第一节 (共5个小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Did you know that bread is one of the earliest human inventions
Bread is a food made of flour and water. Other ingredients and shapes can also be found. Scientists have learned that humans have been eating bread in some form or another for 30,000 years.
Archaeologists(考古学家) have discovered pictures of bakeries(面包房) and bread in ancient Egyptian(埃及的) archaeological sites. It is believed that bread bakeries and home-bakers used the same skills. In fact, because they had no potatoes or rice, bread was the most important in the ancient Egyptians’ diet.
Egyptians used a grain much similar to wheat for their bread. The grain was broken by hand into flour on stone. The flour was mixed with water and salt. It was placed in a pot and baked in a clay oven. This Egyptian bread was a flatbread. Indian naan, similar to pizza, is a good example of flatbread eaten today. However, around 300 BC, Egyptian bakers added to their bread an important ingredient: yeast (酵母). It makes bread rise. Most breads today are made using those four basic ingredients: flour, yeast, salt, and water.
Bread production today is more complicated, which needs more time, patience and hard work. Yes, you can still bake your own bread at home with store—bought flour and yeast. You can also buy bread made at small bakeries. But the bread you see in grocery stores is made in large factories.
