The dog who barked backward
试题呈现:
There once was a stray dog (流浪狗) named Rufus who was the most amazing dog on Kumquat Street. He could hear a ladybug blowing its nose. He could see a pill bug eating a black licorice candy at midnight. Rufus could even smell a caterpillar that hadn’t washed its feet.
You would think that Rufus, being so amazing, was also happy, But he wasn’t, You see, there was one thing that kept Rufus from being adopted by his favorite human. And that was... Rufus barked backward. Here's what he sounded like: “Wob- wow! Wob-wow! Fra-fra-fra! Krab-krab!”
Rufus could stand being laughed at by every squirrel and cat in the neighborhood. What he couldn’t stand was that his bark kept him from living with Janie Johnson.
Janie never laughed at Rufus when he barked. More than anything else, Rufus wanted to be her pet. He wanted to play catch in her yard every day and sleep at the foot of her bed each night.
But Janie's father, Mr. Johnson, wouldn't hear of it, “What A dog that barks backward We'd be the laughing stocks of Kumquat Street! We Johnsons didn't get where we are today by adopting dogs that bark backward. No. Janie. It's out of the question.”
“I’m sorry,” Janie told Rufus one morning as they sat on her front porch. “I keep telling Daddy how great you are. He just won't listen.”
“Krab-krab!” said Rufus.
“Yes, sometimes he is bad-tempered," said Janie “I’ll keep trying, though. Don't worry.”
But Rufus did worry. That evening he talked it over with his friend Bill Bulldog. “I don't think Mr. Johnson will ever like me,” Rufus said, “As long as I bark backward, he'll never let me live in his home.”
“Have you tried treatment ” asked Bill.
Rufus said, “I've tried everything. Nothing helps, It's just the way I bark.”
“You're a great dog Roof, Anyone can see that," said Bill. “It just takes some humans longer to figure it out, that's all, Hey, want to go with me to Succotash Street I've heard that their garbage is fantastic.”
Rufus yawned, “No, thanks," he said, “I'll take a nap.”
When Rufus woke up, it was late afternoon. As he was lying there, his sharp ears heard Mr. Johnson saying, “It's almost suppertime. Is Janie still roller-skating We Johnsons didn't get where we are today by being late for supper.”

Rufus ran down Kumquat Street to look for Janie. With his sharp eyes, he looked everywhere along the street, but not even a single sign of Janie and her roller-skating shoes. With his sharp nose, he sniffed for any smell of Janie, but what greeted him was nothing but the unpleasant smell of the caterpillar’s unwashed feet. With his sharp ears, he could only sense the ladybug blowing its nose. With the efforts of all the senses going in vain, Rufus decided to turn to his unique weapon - bark backward. Though it meant that he would be laughed at by his neighbours, he hoped that in this way he could attract Janie’s attention and find her. All his courage summoned up, Rufus barked backward all the way down Kumquat Street. This time luck went with him and it was just a while before Janie heard his bark and roller-skated all the way to him.
At the sight of Janie and Rufus, Mr. Johnson ran up. This time, instead of saying “We Johnsons didn't get where we are today by...”, he asked Janie what had happened, concern and affection written all over his face. Swelling with pride, Janie explained how she got lost and how Rufus’s unique bark led her back. “I wouldn’t get where I am now without Rufus’ bark. Dad, please!” Janie begged, one hand shaking Dad’s and the other stroking Rufus’ silky fur. Touched by his lovely daughter’s words, Dad felt his heart softened and nodded in approval. And the dog, seeming to understand everything, barked backward merrily, as if announcing his being adopted. Together, the three headed back home, one striding forward, one roller-skating onward, and one wagging his tail and barking backward -“Wob-wow! Wob-wow! Fra-fra-fra! Krab-krab!”
Grow by accepting mistakes and team efforts
试题呈现:
For me, growth begins immediately after I am able to accept my mistakes and admit team efforts. 点题句
When I was elected president of student union, campus officials congratulated me saying I was quite adequate for the job. Before long, we had built a community of people who liked climbing the mountain near our campus. We started out with a small group of hikers, and then the number of participants increased.
One day on campus, I met a woman in a wheelchair called Grace. I asked her if she had ever been to the top of the mountain. She said she hadn't and she would never. I told her to stay positive and not to give up admiring the beauty of the summit. Grace agreed to have a go. We all took turns grabbing a corner of her chair as we carried her 1.7 miles to the top. This was probably one of the most magical and deeply meaningful things I did in college.
With the support of my community and hikers, no one was surprised that I had won the election. The first thing I did as president was hang a sign outside the Associated Students office that read, “Under New Management!” I was proud of my coming accomplishment.
Absolute power changed me absolutely. My ego, my arrogance(傲慢) and my pride were out of control. I began speaking down to people, demanding they listen to me because I thought I knew what was best. Seldom did I join the hikers to climb the mountain, arguing it was a waste of time. My friends and supporters tried to communicate to me that I had changed, that I was abusing my position, but I wasn't listening.
A public conflict with the female vice president about where to build a coffeehouse opened the floodgates for others who were upset with me. They claimed that I had made wrong decisions and that I was unqualified for the job. "Resign! Resign!" the posters of their requests would soon be everywhere on campus. My whole world collapsed. I couldn't figure out why a wonderfully enriching experience as president suddenly turned into one of my worst nightmares(噩梦).

Several days later, I caught sight of a familiar figure in the wheelchair, peering at my poster. It was Grace, the very girl that made it to the mountain top with our encouragement and joint efforts! Seeing her reading what was on the poster made me feel ashamed, I turned around and was ready to avoid her, afraid that she would look down upon me. But the next moment her call of my name entered my ears and I looked back. With a reassuring written on her face, Grace looked into my eyes, “Anyone can make mistakes. Please promise me to stay positive and never give up.” Her words, just like a beacon, instantly brightened up my gloomy world. Then and there, I decided to brave my wrongdoing and make every effort to win back their support and trust.
I went to the campus lawn, began to admit my mistakes in public and promised that I had learned my lesson. And changes could be easily seen in me. Not only did I apologize to them for my speaking down to them and being arrogant to them, I also became open to different opinions. I went to the female vice president, expressed my heartfelt apology to her and discussed the construction of the coffeehouse with her, on which we reached an agreement. More than that, I started to rejoin the hikers in climbing mountains, finding back the long-lost delight and friendship. With everything back on track, I found smiles creeping back on my face and felt really grateful to this enlightening experience, which helped me grow, ready to admit mistakes and embrace team efforts.

Several days later, I caught sight of a familiar figure in the wheelchair, peering at my poster. Feeling a warm blush burning my cheeks, I bowed my head, trying to escape her attention. But after a brief hesitation, I collected myself and edged towards her. When our eyes met, a faint smile flashed across her lips as if to comfort me. A strong sense of shame mingled with awkwardness engulfing me, I stood to the spot, at a loss what to say. It was Grace who broke the silence, saying, firmly and affectionately, “Stay positive and never forget you are not alone.” Her words were like a warm stream flowing into my heart. Greatly inspired, I promised her I would cheer myself up and do everything I could to win back the students’ trust and respect as president.
I went to the campus lawn, began to admit my mistakes in public and promised that I had learned my lesson. Afterwards, I sprinted back to my community and sincerely apologized to them for my arrogance and dictatorial manner before. Then, the following few weeks witnessed me cooperating with my fellows, extensively seeking advice and listening patiently to their opinions. We discussed the siting
of coffeehouse together, exchanged ideas and decided on the best scheme. With joint efforts, not only was the coffeehouse successfully set up, but my job as president also went smoothly. It dawned on me that only by being a humble and inclusive listener can we achieve great success; after all, many hands make light work. / It dawned on me that only by depending on collective wisdom can we succeed.
合作的重要性
Our school holds an annual book fair each January, where new and used books are available for students to purchase. Our librarian, Mr. Egan, is the school sponsor(主办者) for it. Traditionally, the tenth-grade students are responsible for the planning, set-up, and selling at the fair. I am sure that Mr. Egan consulted our teacher, Ms. Cates, for suggestions as to who would be the student directors, and I was pleasantly surprised when he approached me to be one of the students in charge. I was even more surprised when he told me that the student I would be working with was Charlie Lyons.
Charlie and I have known each other since kindergarten but have never been close. Ever since we were partners for the science project last year, there is very little we choose to say to each other. Needless to say, the science project fell short of our expectations. In light of that event, I was shocked that Mr. Egan and Ms. Cates found us a suitable match.
At the meeting with Mr. Egan, we divided the responsibilities between us. I would be in charge of setting up the room and getting the volunteers to work the sale for all three days. Charlie would be in charge of all the books. We were both quite satisfied with our jobs, and even more satisfied that there would be little contact between us.
With only two weeks to plan, I knew I could not waste time. I asked John and Rachel to help me with the set-up and twelve other classmates to work at the fair. I figured that, between Mr. Egan, the friends who volunteered to help, and me, we would be just fine.
Meanwhile, I tried on two separate occasions to start a conversation with Charlie about the progress he was making, but each time his response was, “Everything’s cool.”
On the day of the set-up, my friends and I arrived, only to find Charlie with his head in his hands, surrounded by a million boxes of books. I asked him, “Charlie, what’s wrong ”

He responded in despair, “There are a lot more books here than I expected.” My initial impulse was to say, “This is your mess. Figure it out yourself.” But instead, I said, “Let me see if I can get some help.” Charlie nodded, appreciating the support. Then, we, together with other helpers, rolled up our sleeves and started sorting them by genre. Hours passed by as we worked side by side. Slowly but surely, the chaos began to transform into a perfect fair, and our avoidance of contact into smooth communication. I was surprised that the book fair was a success and even more surprised that we could actually work well together. (98 words)
After the book fair was over, I couldn't stop wondering why Mr. Egan put us together. I approached him, eager to figure out his intention of this unlikely pairing. However, his reply was quite simple, “I knew that this would be a great experience for both of you. It wasn’t so much about running the book fair as it was a lesson in how important it is to communicate and to work alongside others when necessary.” Hearing what he said and thinking of what happened between Charlie and me, I couldn’t help but smile. Sometimes, the most valuable lessons are learned amidst the challenges we face and the people we least expect to be our allies. (100words)
