Have students answer the two questions on page 16 before reading the newsreports.(1)Not all tornadoes start in thunderstorms, but they all have the same sign—afunnel. A sign that a tornado could appear during a thunderstorm is darklow-hanging thunderclouds. They can create the funnel which touches theground to cause a disaster. The fast, strong winds in the funnel make a loudnoise, which is a sign that it is coming closer. The tornado funnel can be seenfrom a distance, so it is a sign for people to move to a safe place.(2)It is important to stay calm. If I am indoors, I must stay there and waituntil the shaking stops. I must find a safe space, such as under a strong table.I must use the stairs and not the lift to get outside safely. If I am outdoors,I must stay away from any buildings or large objects.2.
