When I went to Spain, I thought it was important that I lived with Spanish people, so I didn’t speak English all the time. I did know some friends who were in Madrid as well but I didn’t stay with them. I lived with two Spanish girls and we got on really well. In the beginning, they used to speak really slowly and loud to make sure I would understand. But I often felt like a bit of a fool. Soon they realized that I could understand even though sometimes I might not know what to say in response. It was not difficult to find a house. But the most difficult thing when I first arrived in Spain was to figure out the rental agreement, I didn’t understand it at all, because it was full of legal terms. The house owner was about 85 years old and she didn’t speak any English. She didn’t really understand why I couldn’t understand what I was reading. Those are the challenges you have to face when you move to a new country and there are things you have never considered before. But you have to get through them when you are over there.
Obviously, the aim of your year abroad is to live in the country where they speak the language you’re learning. Just talk to the locals and learn as many everyday phrases as possible. Learn what people really say, instead of just things that you learn from textbooks and from your classes at university.

However, he considerately helped me to go to the toilet. He then advised me to wash up in the toilet while waiting for my parents’ arrival. Meanwhile, he even tried to comfort me and promised he would clean the classroom so that there was no need for me to feel embarrassed. Tears were welling up in my eyes, dripping down into my mouth and tasting like a mixture of embarrassment and gratitude. Shortly after that, my parents arrived. Having known everything from the class monitor, they took me to the hospital immediately. It turned out that I had food poisoning.
After fully recovering from the food poisoning, I returned to school. Instead of trying to cover everything up, I shared what had happened to me publicly in front of my classmates and teachers, extending my parents’ and my own heartfelt gratitude not only for the class monitor’s generous assistance but also for his kind consideration. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been increasingly good at fooling people. A series of photos showing former US president Donald Trump being aggressively arrested by police have caught people’s attention. They were fake but very convincing.
Created by the AI program Midjourney, the photos were highly realistic, from the characters’ movements to the surroundings. However, many details can give away the fact that they are made by AI. The Washington Post’s technology writer Shira Ovide shared her tips. The main idea is to spot the problems — anything that would look strange in a photo.
AI software has a history of generating human hands incorrectly. It sometimes can create hands with more than five fingers. This is because AI isn’t sure what a “hand” exactly is, according to Popular Science. The data AI uses to learn often show hands and fingers in various gestures, which can be very confusing for AI.
AI-generated images also usually contain details that are against reality. To spot this, focus on items like accessories. For example, people in an image may be missing earrings or one part of their sunglasses. If there’s text in an image, such as a newspaper or poster, it’s usually garbled (篡改), even though the text may look realistic from a distance.
Another thing AI is terrible at handling is the background. If there’s a crowd in the image, people’s faces in the background are usually blurry — or they don’t have faces at all!
The development of AI-generated art also raises alarm bells about how these fake images could be used to spread misinformation. “I think misinformation is going to hit an all-time high,” Jamie Cohen, a digital culture and AI expert in the US, told New York Post. Generating an AI artwork is to “create reality”, Cohen argued, adding that, being able to tell whether the work is real or not requires high media literacy(素养) skills. “The world may not be ready for how realistic the images have become,” Shane Kittelson, a US researcher, told The Washington Post.

When you walk on a sandy beach, it takes more energy than walking down a sidewalk—because the weight of your body pushes into the sand. It turns out that the same thing is true for vehicles driving on roads.
“The weight of the vehicles creates a very shallow indentation(凹痕) in the pavement — like it's continuously driving up a very shallow hill,” said Jeremy Gregory, a scientist at MIT. This system could also be a way to shave carbon emissions without some of the usual barriers. “Usually, when it comes to reducing emissions in the transportation department, you're talking about changing policies related to vehicles and also driver behavior, which involves millions and millions of people — as opposed to changing the way we design and preserve our pavements. That's just on the order of thousands of people who are working in transportation agencies.” And when it comes to improving our streets and highways — those agencies are where you might say the rubber meets the road.
