Stacy Dean, an official at the US Department of Agriculture, was inspired by a visit to Watkins Elementary, in Washington, D. C. Students grow vegetables in their school garden. They also roll up their sleeves in the school's kitchen to participate in a FRESHFARM FoodPrints class, which integrates cooking and nutrition education.
"Who's next " asks instructional coach Regina Green, as kids throw vegetables into the pan and the smell of fresh ginger and onions fills the air. "We grew these in our garden," Jessie Gibson, one of the students, says proudly. Then he measures and pours dry ingredients into a bowl.
"Our family has tried new things because of the program," says Catie Kelley, whose two children have participated in the FRESHFARM program. "They come home with the recipes," Kelley says. "It's fun because it's things that we don't usually make at home," so it has encouraged them to try novel combinations. She says the kids take more of an interest at the grocery store to identify foods they've tried in the program.
Dean wants to have the science around health y eating integrated. A block to scaling up these types of programs is money. The program relies on grants and receives some federal funding, but it's not enough to expand the program to all the schools that could benefit.
In fact, there are other problems. At a time when diet-related disease is a leading cause of death, and unhealthy eating habits are rooted in US culture, it's unrealistic to think that a cooking curriculum could overcome such a sweeping, societal problem. "We know from years of evidence that we need multiple things to come together to support healthy eating," says Angela Odoms-Young, a professor of maternal and child nutrition at Cornell University.
Despite these challenges, programs like FRESHFARM can help kids expand their choices by introducing them to new tastes. At first, many kids are turned off by the bitter taste of greens. But through the magic of cooking, processing the onions, and blending in fresh ginger, kids can be inspired.
24. What inspired Dean during the visit to Watkins Elementary
A. The coach's skillful performance.
B. Students' getting more access to nature.
C. The integrated hands-on cooking.
D. Students' gardening and cooking.
25. How does the program benefit Kelley's family
A. They pay more attention to healthy eating.
B. They have a more harmonious relation.
C. They show more interest in shopping.
D. They have enriched their recipes.
26. What can be inferred from paragraph 5
A. Advocating healthy eating needs joint efforts.
B. A cooking curriculum should be promoted.
C. Nutrition helps put students on a healthy path.
D. Food is fundamental to life and good health.
27. What does the author think of the program
A. Complex. B. Widespread. C. Effective. D. Easily-operated.

Heading to the beach is a popular option for lots of people on a hot summer's day. It's there that you'll find plenty of sand. But could sand be more important than we've ever realized A team of scientists have found a very different use for the tiny grains that we like to play with on the beach.
They've come up with a type of measurement which will allow them to figure out what's known as the "age distribution fingerprint" of the mineral zircon, which is found within sand. The researchers believe this could provide them with new information on how the Earth's surface has changed over the last few thousand million years.
Some minerals, like zircon, have stood the test of time, and are thought to carry clues of Earth's history. By studying the zircon found in grains of sand from rivers and rocks, the scientists are able to work out previously hidden details about the Earth's past. "Strong and lasting minerals like zircon paint a vivid picture of the planet's history, including changing environments, the evolution of continents, and the accumulation of mineral resources at ancient p late boundaries," said Dr Milo Barham, who worked on the research.“The world's beaches faithfully record a detailed history of our planet's geological past, with billions of years of Earth's history marked in the geology(地质状况) of each grain of sand and our technique helps unlock the information.”
The scientists tried out their new technique by taking a look at sediment(沉淀物) in South America, East Antarctica, and Western Australia and they found some interesting differences. "The sediment on the west and east coasts of South America is completely different because there are many young grains on the west side that were created beneath the continent. However, on the east coast, all is relatively calm geologically and there is a mix of old and young grains," said professor Chris Kirkland, who also worked on this research.
28. What do the underlined words "a very different use" in paragraph 1 refer to
A. Sand can provide a geological history of the Earth's surface.
B. Sand can reconstruct the conditions of mineral formation.
C. Sand can help discover the age distribution fingerprint.
D. Sand can be used to kill time on a hot summer's day.
29. Why do the scientists choose to study sand
A. Its cost is extremely low. B. Its zircon is hard and long-lasting.
C. It exists all over the world. D. It's experienced many changes.
30. What can be learnt about South America from the last paragraph
A. The west coast is relatively calm geologically.
B. The east coast is more active than the west one.
C. Its beaches have revealed the Earth's mysteries.
D. The grains on the west and east coast have different ages.
31. What can be the best title for the text

Lip-reading involves tracking facial movements to determine what someone is saying. Many lip-reading devices point a camera at the user's face. Others rely on sensors stuck around the speaker's mouth. Neither approach is suitable for daily use, says Ruidong Zhang of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. His team built a new lip-reading tech on a pair of eyeglasses, which uses acoustics—sound—to recognize silent speech. Zhang presented this work on April 19, 2023 at the ACM Conference in Hamburg, Germany.
"Imagine the sonar system whales use, " says Zhang. They send a sound into their environment and listen for echoes(回声). From those echoes, they locate objects in their surroundings. "Our approach is similar, but not exactly the same," Zhang explains. "We're not just interested in locating something. Instead, we're trying to track moving patterns."
Zhang calls the new tech EchoSpeech, consisting of two small speakers under one lens of a pair of glasses, two small microphones under the other lens, and a circuit board attached to one of the side arms. When EchoSpeech is switched on, its speakers play high-pitched sounds. People can't hear them. The sound waves move in every direction. Some travel around the user's lips and mouth. While speaking, the user's facial movements change the paths of those sound waves. That, in turn, changes the echo patterns picked up by the microphones. These patterns are sent to the wearer's smartphone over Bluetooth. Using AI, an EchoSpeech app then interprets the echo patterns. It matches each pattern to commands the smartphone then follows.
EchoSpeech currently recognizes 31 voice commands and recognizes numbers that are three to six digits long. According to Zhang, future versions could recognize a much larger vocabulary. If so, users could write personal text messages via silent speech. In a noisy restaurant, they could use that approach to send messages to friends who're hard of hearing.
People who've had their vocal cords(声带) removed have been contacting Zhang's team. They want to know if this interface could read their lips and then speak out loud for them. Zhang is now exploring whether EchoSpeech could do this in a person's own voice.
32. Why does Zhang mention the sonar system used by whales in paragraph 2
A. To make their new tech more convincing.
B. To highlight the advantages of their new tech.
C. To explain the inspiration for their new tech.
D. To make their new tech more understandable.
33. What is the basis for the operation of EchoSpeech
A. Sound travels in a straight line.
B. One's facial movements are unique.
C. Sound waves are reflected from an object.
D. Microphones are sensitive to loud sound.
34. What can we learn from the fourth paragraph
A. People can hear sounds created by EchoSpeech.
B. EchoSpeech will be put into use before long.
C. EchoSpeech can enhance interpersonal communication.
D. Users can use EchoSpeech to write personal messages.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. New glasses read your lips and tell your phone.
B. Lip-reading devices can understand voice commands.
C. Lip-reading techniques are springing up worldwide.
D. Recognizing silent speech has already become possible.

You may have heard of the "fight or flight" response—an evolutionary system that allows us to enter a survival state in the presence of physical or psychological threats.
Your fight-or-flight mode is activated by the sympathetic nervous system. It's meant to force you into action in order to temporarily protect or prepare yourself for something bad. 36 . Exposure to stressful situations may be perceived by your brain and body as intense and repetitive, locking you into a fight-or-flight state that may continue to exist for days, months or even years. We asked experts about signs that your mind and body have not returned to their normal, resting state.
37
When stress is long-lasting, the body's response system becomes overwhelmed, causing a collapse that may leave you unfeeling to everything. This emotional situation can make you feel like you're on autopilot or disconnected from yourself and others. You might not be able to respond to emotions, which can lead to forgetfulness, difficulty of focusing, tiredness, hopelessness and self-destructive behaviors.
You're always tired, but can't rest
38 . It keeps the mind and body alert and in survival mode to protect themselves. Sleep disturbances and muscle tension can be caused by biological changes. Other sleep problems can include nightmares, early waking, restless sleep and difficulty of falling asleep. Long-lasting exposure to cortisol, the stress hormone in the body, can put us in a constant state of awareness to our surroundings.
How to calm your fight-or-flight response
Eliminating long-lasting stress can be difficult. 39 . Physical ways to ensure you're taking care of yourself include exercising, eating regularly and getting enough sleep. 40 . Most of all, it's important to recognize when you need help, which can mean getting support from available resources.
A. You're emotionally unfeeling
B. But sometimes, that can go out of control
C. A common symptom of nonstop stress is overalertness
D. Making time to process your emotions is important in coping
E. Some stress can be healthy, contributing to cognitive benefits

In a small quiet coastal village lived a fisherman named James and his faithful dog, Oliver. Oliver was more than just a pet; he was James's companion and close friend. They spent their days together, out on the fishing boat, with Oliver's ears flapping in the wind.
One day, a terrible storm was brewing, and the villagers urged James to stay onshore. But James needed to go out to sea. Oliver, sensing the danger, barked and whined, trying to stop James. But James reassured Oliver and promised to return safely.
Out at sea, the storm grew fierce. The waves towered, and the wind howled. Hours turned into days, and the villagers lost hope for James's return. Only Oliver waited, day and night, at the end of the pier(码头), eyes fixed on the horizon. Only he refused to give up hope. He knew that James was a strong and experienced sailor, who would do everything he could to survive the storm.
After three agonizing days, a broken boat drifted ashore. The villagers found James, extremely weak but still alive. Oliver's joy knew no bounds; he leaped and danced around James, licking his face and wagging his tail happily. The friendship between the two was evident to everyone.
Time went by, and the incident became a story, but for James and Oliver, it was a life-changing experience. James realized that Oliver's instincts were right, and he vowed never to ignore them again. The relationship between James and Oliver deepened. They understood each other in a way that transcended mere human-animal interaction. Their connection was spiritual, soulful, and strong. But as the years rolled on, Oliver grew old. His movements slowed, and his eyes dimmed. James took care of him with the same love and patience that Oliver had shown him. They spent their last days together, cherishing every moment.

M: That's what I am thinking about. Three years is a long time.
(Text 2)
W: Deb, would you like to see a movie
M: What's playing now
W: Let me check. There is a new action movie with The Rock, a few horror movies and a romantic comedy with Will Smith.
M: I don't like horror movies or action movies.
(Text 3)
M: Excuse me.
W: Yes
M: This is not what I ordered. I ordered two cheeseburgers rather than two beefburgers.
W: I'm sorry, sir. I will check it for you.
(Text 4)
W: So Mr Torres, how did you hear about this job
M: I had previously learned about your company from a friend and then I saw your advertisement of the job online. I clicked on it and it brought me to your company's website, where I applied for the position.
W: Make sense.
(Text 5)
M: Did you enjoy the concert yesterday
W: Yes and no. It was amazing until I tried to catch a taxi to go home and realized I left my wallet in the cafe where I stayed before the concert began.
M: Oh no. That's terrible.
(Text 6)
M: Hi, Lydia. Are you staying for our badminton practice today
W: I'm sorry I can't. I have to go home early to prepare for my mom's birthday.
M: Oh, tell her I said happy birthday.
W: I will. Thank you.
M: Have you talked to the coach yet
W: Yes, don't worry. He's fine with that.
M: Have you prepared the birthday cake
W: My brother will bring it home.
(Text 7)
W: Oh hey there, Matt! It's quite a coincidence seeing you here on the bus, isn't it
M: Absolutely, Lisa! I usually drive to work, but my car's at the mechanic shop today. How about you
W: Same here! My car's battery died. Guess it's a car trouble day for both of us. Any plans for the weekend
M: I am planning to have a barbecue at my place. You should come over!
W: Sounds delightful! I'd love to. Do you need me to bring anything
M: Just bring yourself. Though if you have a preference for a special dish, feel free to bring it along!
W: Great! I can make a potato salad. I'll bring some of that. By the way, have you met the new neighbors
M: Not yet, but I saw them moving in. They seem to have a lot of outdoor devices. Maybe they are daring types.
W: Interesting! Well, I'd better head off here. See you on the weekend!
M: Looking forward to it, Lisa! Take care.
(Text 8)
M: Do you know why I love summer vacation, Mom
W: You can eat all kinds of ice cream, and you don't need to go to school, right, Tony
M: No.
W: Then, don't tell me it's because you can go fishing every day.
M: You are so right. No one knows me better than you do.
W: Oh, don't even think about that. You promised me that you'd go with me to your grandparents'.
M: Could we make it next weekend I was just wondering if you could let me do whatever I want this weekend.
W: That's okay. But don't forget what you said today.
M: OK. I won't.
W: Now finish your meal and go to bed soon.
(Text 9)
W: Hey Mark, I've been thinking about adopting a pet but I am unsure about which one to go for. What do you think
M: Oh, that's a delightful idea, Laura! Pets bring so much joy. It really depends on your lifestyle. Do you want a pet that requires a lot of care or something low-maintenance
W: I have a regular 9 to 5 job, so I think a low-maintenance pet would suit me better.
M: In that case, perhaps a cat would be a good fit. They are fairly independent and don't require walks like dogs do.
W: That sounds like a match. In fact, I was considering a fish. They seem easy to care for.
M: True, but remember, the fish tank does need regular cleaning.
W: Right, I hadn't thought about that. I also like birds; they are colorful and cheerful.
M: Birds are lovely!
W: Thank you, Mark. You've given me good things to consider. I'll weigh my options carefully.
M: Anytime, Laura. It's exciting and I'm sure whichever pet you choose will be lucky to have you!

I had a great time on my trip to the Great Wall. It was an unforgettable experience that I will cherish forever.
第二节
One possible version:
Oliver's last days were peaceful, filled with love and comfort from James. He and James would sit by the shore, Oliver's head resting on James's lap, both soaking in the memories of their shared adventures. The once lively dog's eyes still sparkled with joy when he was with James. When Oliver's time came, he passed away in James's arms, his tail giving one last wag, as if to say goodbye. It was a peaceful farewell.
James buried Oliver near their favorite spot on the shore, marking it with a wooden cross. The enduring legacy of their relationship continued to live in James's heart and the hearts of those who knew their story. Their bond went beyond ordinary companionship, evolving into a symbol of love, loyalty, and friendship. James often visited the grave, feeling that the connection they had was everlasting. Their story continued to inspire villagers, becoming a timeless lesson on the depth of connection between a human and an animal.
