(22-23八年级下·江苏南通·期中)“I wish I had straight hair”; “I’d like to be taller”. At times, we all want to look a bit more like someone else. However, the pictures we see on TV and social media can give us wrong ideas about how our bodies “should” look. The truth is that everybody is different—and that’s a good thing. Accepting and feeling good about our bodies is really important for our self confidence. Body confidence is when someone accepts and behaves kindly towards their body. That includes our size and shape, skin color, appearance(外貌) and any physical disabilities. Jade Parnell from the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), says that having body confidence is “about being accepting of your body and what it does for you”.
If you feel positively about your body, you are more likely to take care of it. Research has even shown that you are more likely to take part in activities and perform well in school. However feeling agitated about your body could make you step back, do less well at school and even feel down. Parnell says that the cost of trying to achieve the “perfect” appearance is high. She says, “If you’re spending a lot of time trying to look a certain way, you will have less time to spend with friends and to make important memories.”
It’s important to remember that everybody is different. To develop a positive body image, Parnell says, “Try to talk positively about your own body and other people’s bodies. Try not to pay too much attention to appearance. Instead, think about what your body does for you; do your legs make you run really fast ” She also suggests treating your body well by eating different kinds of foods, exercising to feel good and to have fun, and getting plenty of sleep. Remember that you are more than how you look.

C.spend more money on your appearance D.remember what you used to be like

A.To encourage readers to take more exercise.
B.To remind readers not to eat too much food.

During the test flight, the balloon reached an altitude of 37 kilometers where passengers would be able to look at the Earth from the blackness of space, according to Daily Mail. When the flights are available, the company aims to carry 3,000 passengers on 400 trips every year.
How does a space balloon work The balloon is usually filled with helium or hydrogen, which are both much lighter than air, and it flies up.
According to NASA, the balloon is filled with the amount of gas that will give it enough lift to get off the ground and rise. As it rises, the gas inside the balloon grows larger.
The balloon stops when the density of the gas inside and the air outside is about the same, it begins to fall down as gas goes out slowly.
So the whole trip is not intense. The Space Perspective in US says that the trips are about relaxation. The balloon rises slowly at 12 miles (about 18.3 kilometers) an hour, and it takes about two hours to get to the 37 km altitude. It also takes another two hours to go back to the land.
Since its successful test flight in June 2022, Space Perspective Company started selling tickets for spaceflights in 2024—and it has already sold out. The company now buys ships to turn them into “floating spaceports”, reported Daily Mail. By lifting the balloon from ships on the sea, there will be more chances to enjoy the tour, such as flights at sunrise and sunset.

For example, people might look at what others have, like expensive clothes or nice cars, and wish they could have the same. But the things that money can buy cannot bring happiness to a person for long.
But is that really true Studies have found that money can, in fact, make people happier. But it’s not having money that brings happiness. However, it is giving money to others that makes people happy. It could be buying a present for a friend or family member. It could be buying a homeless person food to eat. It could be giving money to a person in need. Just think about the last time you used your own money to do something for someone else. How did you feel Whether it is a small or large amount (数量)of money, people feel happier when they give. This is because making someone else happy makes the giver happy, too.
This idea of connecting (联系) your happiness to the happiness of others is described as ubuntu in an African language. There is even a story about a man visiting Africa who asked some kids to race to a nearby tree. The first child to touch the tree would get a sweet treat (甜食). Surprisingly, all the children held hands and ran together. They all touched the tree at the same time. The man asked why they had done this. The children simply said they could only enjoy eating the treat if everyone had one. Clearly, those children understood that the key to happiness is making others happy.

These large islands of Hawaii that are open to visitors each offer something a little different, so where you go will depend on (取决于) what kind of holiday you like.
Molokai (莫洛凯岛)
If you go on holiday to experience local culture and history, then there is no place better than the island of Molokai. There are many reasons to enjoy drinking tea. However, you should let the hot tea cool down a little before you drink it. Why A new study reported in the International Journal of Cancer gives the answer.
“Many people enjoy drinking tea, coffee or other hot drinks. However, according to our report, drinking very hot tea can increase the risk of esophageal cancer (食道癌), so you’d better wait until hot drinks cool down before drinking,” the lead writer of the study, Dr. Farhad Islami of the American Cancer Society, said.
For the study, Islami and his team followed more than 50, 000 people aged between 40 and 75 years old. They found 317 of those people had esophageal cancer. The National Cancer Institute reported that about 17, 290 Americans had esophageal cancer in a year, and that only about 19 percent of sick people survived. However, five years later, they died.
The scientists found that drinking 700 ml drinks (about three cups) every day or more at a higher temperature (60°C or hotter) would have a 90 percent higher risk of esophageal cancer, compared with people drinking the same cups at temperature below 60℃.
This is not the first report showing a person drinking very hot drinks has the risk of cancer. In 2022, the World Health Organization showed a report. It found that drinking very hot drinks of any kind could increase the risk of cancer.

Eyes are important in our everyday life. We use them to read books, see colors and the beautiful things of the world. But sometimes, we use them too much and it hurts them.
In the past, nearsightedness (近视) was a common eye problem among children. This is mostly because of their bad eye habits, such as watching TV too long and reading books in bed.

People with digital eyestrain may get headaches, dry and red eyes, eye pain, watering and other eye problems.

1) When you are watching electronic screens, keep them at least 30 cm from your eyes. Try not to use your smartphone in sunlight.
2) Blink (眨眼) more often when you are looking at the screen. This can help to stop dry eyes.
3) Remember to take a 20-20-20 break: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet (about 6 meters) away.

It didn’t take long for the bigger boys to make us stop fighting, but in fact I lost. My head was seriously hurt. After the fight we didn’t talk with each other any more.

He wondered what the wise young judge (法官) was going to say. “Well,” said the young judge, “I have read the contract carefully, and it does not say anything about taking his blood (血). It says ‘a pound of flesh’. You can take your pound of flesh, but you may not take one drop of his blood. If you take any of his blood, the duke (公爵) will take everything you own!”
Now it was Graziano’s turn to bless the judge and call him wise (智者).
“You wanted justice (公平),” Portia told Shylock, “and you will have more justice than you wanted.”
Shylock didn’t want to give everything he owned to the duke. He decided not to take his pound of flesh. He said he would take the money.
“Give me ninety thousand dollars,” he said, “and I will have pity on Antonio and let him go.”
Bassanio was happy to give him the money. He was very pleased that his friend Antonio would not die.
“Wait!” Portia said again. “He does not want the money. It is not written in the contract.”
Shylock said he just wanted to have his money back and wouldn’t even need interest (利息). Bassanio was ready to give it to him, but again Portia stopped him.
“He said he wanted only the thing written in the contract.”
Shylock understood that he would not get his pound of flesh. He understood that he would not get his money. He decided to go home.
“Wait!” said Portia, for the third time. The law of Venice, says that if you plan to kill a citizen (公民) of Venice, you will lose everything that you own. Half of what you have will belong to the person you tried to kill, and the other half will belong to the duke.

Space tour is not all about rockets—large space balloons can do it too! The company HALO Space in Spain completed the first test flight of its balloon in December, 2022. This means another company joined the competition of making space tour a reality.

73.Why does the writer advise people not to drink very hot drinks
A.Because they may cause serious disease. B.Because drinking hot drinks takes longer time.
C.Because people’s mouths may get hurt. D.Because they don’t taste good at all.
74.How does the writer show us the reason for not drinking very hot drinks
A.By telling us about his experience. B.By asking some questions.
C.By sharing some information online. D.By giving some information from reports.
75.What does the underlined word “survived” mean in Chinese
A.幸存 B.失败 C.遇难 D.受伤
76.Who may have a 90 percent higher risk of esophageal cancer
A.Jane—she usually drinks cold drinks after lunch.
B.Alan—he has a cup of hot coffee every morning.
C.Steve—he drinks 4 cups of very hot tea every day.
D.Mary—she usually drinks warm milk before sleeping.
77.What’s the main idea of the passage
