Felix “Andarin” Carvajal was a born runner. As a boy, he spent his childhood running up and down nearby hills. Years later, as a postman, Carvajal became well-known in the city of Havana, and finally, he began to put his fame to use for donations, so he might represent Cuba as a marathon runner at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri. At the time, there was no state support for Olympic athletes in Cuba.
But even with the money, Carvajal nearly didn’t make it there. His journey to the Games took him first to New Orleans, where he lost all the money he had saved up for the trip. In a foreign city, Carvajal began to walk north up along the Mississippi River to St. Louis. It was hundreds of miles, but between walking and hitching (搭便车) rides, he was able to reach St. Louis in time for his event.
It was August in St. Louis and Carvajal stood in the staging area, hungry and out of shape and tired. Carvajal took off to a commanding early lead despite the fact that he had not eaten for two days. Carvajal had never particularly believed in pacing himself. Carvajal was mostly self-trained and his ideas about running had always been straightforward: to run far and run fast and run until you can’t go anymore. But 26.2 miles is a long distance. Carvajal was reported to have picked and eaten five green apples while running and became badly ill with a stomachache. Miraculously, Carvajal managed to return to the race and finish in fourth place.
The 1904 Olympics was the peak of Carvajal’s international career. But he remained a runner for the rest of his life. At 55 years old, Carvajal ran the entire length of Cuba along the country’s main highway, a distance of nearly 700 miles. Toward the end of his life, he performed a short running demonstration (演示). “This is to show you that I still run.” he told the crowd.

An orchestra is attempting to bring people living with dementia (痴呆) back into the present. The work being done by Manchester Camerata has never been more important, given that there are about 900,000 people with the condition in the UK, a number that is predicted to nearly double by 2040.
People with dementia often find listening to music can reignite old memories from long ago. Much more overlooked, though, is the impact that making music can have on the present. While some with dementia can often feel trapped in the past, some researchers believe the act of creating music—as well as listening to it—can help to reconnect then to the here and now.
A new BBC documentary—Dementia, Music and Us—follows the work of Manchester Camerata and its principal flautist (长笛手) Amina Hussain. who, also a professional music therapist, leads classes across the north-west of England that have been described as life-changing. Classes for the community consist of improvisation (即兴创作), singing, and writing their own music.
Keith, 62, was diagnosed with dementia when he was 53. Like many, he really struggled to come to terms with his new reality. He found the sessions to be genuinely life-changing. “I think the thing that saved us was the first ever music group we went to because from that group it opened other groups up for us.” he said. “The workshops make you smile, enjoy life and it just brings the best out of you.”
Researcher Dr Dowlen is seeking to better understand the “in the moment” benefits of music-making for people with dementia. She believes the improvisational music workshop experience allows people to “create something that is held now in the moment.” She added, “Improvisational music-making is particularly important for people with dementia, especially when it comes to building their confidence and their self-esteem.”
8. Why is the work being done by Manchester Camerata important
A. Music is an important part of daily life. B. Music is an effective cure for dementia.
C. More people are pursuing a musical career. D. A growing number of people live with denentia.
9. What does the underlined word “reignite” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Keep alive. B. Bring back. C. Push away. D. Take up.
10. How have the workshops affected Keith
A. He has become more socially active. B. He has adapted to life with dementia.
C. He has demonstrated his music talent. D. He has recovered his long-lost memory.
11. What can we learn about the workshops from Dr Dowlen
A. They bring mixed results, B. They enjoy great popularity.
C. They promote people’s welfare. D. They need to focus on the moment.
D
Whenever anyone asks me what tech I’d like to see invented, I always say the universal translator, which lets you understand and speak any language.
Meta AI recently announced the start of the universal speech translator (UST) project, which aims to create AI systems that enable real-time speech-to-speech translation across all languages, even those that are spoken but not commonly written. Meta says that today’s AI translation models are focused on widely-used written languages, and that more than 40% of primarily spoken languages are not covered by such translation technologies.
According to Meta, the model is the first AI-powered speech translation system for the unwritten language Hokkien (闽南语), a Chinese language spoken in southeastern China. The system allows Hokkien speakers to hold conversations with English speakers, a significant step toward bringing people together wherever they are located.
To build UST, Meta AI focused on overcoming three important translation system challenges. It addressed data scarcity by getting more training data in more languages and finding new ways to use the data it had found. It solved the modeling problems that arise as models grow to serve many more languages. And it sought new ways to improve on its results.
Meta AI claims that the techniques it pioneered with Hokkien can be extended to many other unwritten languages — and eventually work in real time. For this purpose, Meta has released the Speech Matrix, a large collection of speech-to-speech translations, which enables other research teams to create translation models for other languages.
Artificial (人工的) speech translation could play a significant role in our world. For interactions, it will enable people from around the world to communicate with each other more smoothly, making the social net more interconnected. For content, using artificial speech translation allows you to easily localize content.
Yashar Behzadi, CEO and founder of Synthesis AI, believes that technology needs to enable more natural experiences if the digital world is to succeed. He says that one of the current challenges for UST models is the computationally expensive training that’s needed because of the wide range and very slight differences in meaning or sound of languages. Also, to train strong AI models requires vast amounts of typical data. A significant bottleneck to building these AI models in the near future will be to ensure training data collect the privacy in agreement with rules and law.
12. What text type is this passage
A. Exposition. B. Argumentation. C. Narration. D. Prose.
13. What is the feature of the UST project
A. It changes spoken languages to written forms.
B. It attracts wider attention to written languages in translation.
C. It adds 40% of spoken languages into translation technology.
D. It enables real-time speech-to-speech translation across all languages.
14. What do we know about UST
A. It is expensive to collect typical data.
B It increases the use of a certain language.
C. Its techniques are finally developed for Hokkien.
D. It helps inspire interactions and content localization.
15. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. AI Translation: Make Translation Faster B. AI Translation: Meet You in All Languages
C. Unwritten Language: Bring People Together D. Unwritten Language: Translation Challenge

Social networking dominates our life in so many ways. I am the one who is addicted to it. Sometimes I set deadlines for myself : I will start doing my homework at 8 pm and finish it in two hours. At 7:50 pm, I’m scrolling through my friends’ silly posts and photos. Before I know it, it’s 9:30 pm and I haven’t moved an inch from the sofa. I download song after song, video after video, but I’m not really paying attention. The stimulation is in chasing after the next song or video rather than truly enjoying it. Since I spend so much time socialising online, I keep delaying things that are important in my real life: homework, tasks, my good friends and so on. Especially, I miss connecting with my family members in a meaningful way. So it is with my sister.
注意:
1. 续写内容应为150词左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On a family holiday last summer, my sister spent all her time complaining that she needed to charge her phone.

But even with the money Carvajal nearly didn’t make it there.
4. What did Carvajal use his fame to do
A. Get a job as a postman.
B. Inspire more people to run.
C. Support professional athletes in Cuba.
D. Raise money for his trip to the Olympics.
5. What happened to Carvajal according to paragraph 2
A. He lost all his money.
B. He got lost in a foreign city.
C. He traveled round New Orleans.
D. He walked to the Mississippi River.
6. What did Carvajal believe in
A. Keeping pace with most runners.
B. Running fast from the beginning.
C. Speeding up in the middle of a race.
D. Running at an average speed all through a race.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Carvajal
A. A man devoted to charity.
B. A runner born for medals.
C. An Olympic athlete always in need.
D. A man always on the move.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. B 7. D
【解析】

【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Years later, as a postman, Carvajal became well-known in the city of Havana, and eventually, he began to put his fame to use, seeking out donations so he might represent Cuba as a marathon runner at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri. At the time, there was no state support for Olympic athletes in Cuba.(多年以后,作为一名邮递员,卡瓦哈尔在哈瓦那市声名鹊起,最终,他开始利用自己的名声,寻求捐款,以便在密苏里州圣路易斯的1904年夏季奥林匹克运动会上代表古巴参加马拉松比赛。当时,古巴没有国家对奥运会运动员的支持。)”可知,在Carvajal出名后,Carvajal利用自己的名声为自己能代表古巴参加1904年夏季奥林匹克寻求捐款。故选D项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“But even with the money, Carvajal nearly didn’t make it there. His journey to the Games took him first to New Orleans, where he lost all the money he had saved up for the trip.(但即使有了钱,卡瓦哈尔也差点没能到达那里。他的奥运之旅首先把他带到了新奥尔良,在那里他失去了所有为这次旅行积攒的钱。)”可知,在去参加奥运会的途中,他首先去了奥尔良,在那里他失去了所有为这次旅行积攒的钱。故选A项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Carvajal was mostly self-trained and his ideas about running had always been straightforward: to run far and run fast and run until you can’t go anymore.(卡瓦哈尔基本上是自学成才,他对跑步的想法一直很直接:跑得远,跑得快,跑到你再也跑不动为止。)”

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

C. Narration. D. Prose.

C. It adds 40% of spoken languages into translation technology.
D. It enables real-time speech-to-speech translation across all languages.
14. What do we know about UST
A. It is expensive to collect typical data.
B. It increases the use of a certain language.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. D 15. C

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写内容应为150词左右;

【答案】On a family holiday last summer, my sister spent all her time complaining that she needed to charge her phone. It was then that I realised how much social networking had become a part of our daily lives. Even amidst the beauty of nature, we found it difficult to disconnect from the virtual world and engage with our surroundings. My sister and I often laughed about videos we found hilarious, but we hardly ever laughed over our own jokes anymore. We were in the same space yet miles apart, engrossed in our own virtual communities.
Then my father recently declared that every Sunday would be “No Screen Sunday” in our home. This new rule meant we had an entire day to ourselves without any screens, which initially seemed impossible. But as weeks passed by, we found ourselves looking forward to these Sundays. The rich and uninterrupted conversations we had, the board games we played, the meals we cooked and ate together, everything felt so real and warm. No Screen Sundays may not have completely removed our dependency on social media, but it certainly helped us value what was more important in life - spending quality time with our loved ones.
