1. Have students read the blog post and complete the chart below.
(1) I was a smartphone addict and I wanted to make a change.
(2) What happened during the week without my smartphone.
(3) The first day was the hardest and I felt disconnected from everyone and
everything.
(4) I began to feel free to do lots of things and was able to appreciate the
beauty in life with my own eyes.
(5) My offline relationships benefited as well.
2. Have students find the details which support the topic sentences.
1)I was a smartphone addict.
● My eyes were glued to the little screen whenever I walked down the street,
had dinner with friends or lay in bed at night.
●The first thing I did when I woke up in the morning was reach for my phone.
●I always asked for Wi-Fi connections when I went to a new restaurant or
coffee shop.
●A dead battery in my smartphone would make me feel stressed. 批 注
2)My offline relationships benefited as well.
●My relationship with an old friend improved.
●I also made sure to spend more time with my parents.
3. Have students answer the following question.
What does Alan learn from his experience of stopping using his smartphone for
a week
Those seven days have given him a great appreciation for life beyond the
screen. He has realized that real life and real relationships are more important
to him. Life beyond smartphones is richer and more beautiful, and he is going
to take advantage of it. He wants to cut back on the amount of time he spends
on his smartphone every day.
4.Have students finish part A on page 40.
Before: Looked at his smartphone all the time. Reached for his smartphone first
in the morning. Always asked for Wi-Fi connections in a new place. Felt it
necessary to make a change but did not know how.
After: Had time for reading, writing and exercise. Appreciated the beauty in
life with his own eyes. Maintained offline relationships with both friends and
family.
5. Have students finish part B on page 40.
If I had to live without my smartphone for a week, I would spend more time
doing physical activities. For example, I could take my camera, go for a walk
to my local park and take photos of interesting things. If the weather is not
good, I will stay indoors and play some board games with my family. I could
probably also spend more time studying or tidying up my bedroom. I might help
my mother cook dinner too.
6. Have students finish part C on page 40.
Look up from your phone: live life the real way!
