Parades, music, art, and food from many different cultures…if this sounds fun to you, then you can’t miss the Mombasa Carnival, a huge multicultural street party that takes place every November in Mombasa, Kenya. It’s a
festival that celebrates not only African culture, but also cultures from other countries.
Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya, Africa, and since the 12th century, it has been a stopping place for many foreign traders. Indians, Arabians, as well as the Spanish, all came there and left pieces of their cultures
behind.
During the festival, businessmen line the streets, selling products. Some traditional artists show and sell their works, and local bands play Afropop and other types of music while traditional and modern dancing all take place
on stage and in the streets.
Men and women wear traditional clothing, such as the kikoy. It’s a large piece of cloth that covers around the
body and is tied at the waist or below the armpits with bright colors, usually worn by both men and women. The
cloth can also be a skirt or even be used as a bag to carry babies. This type of clothing represents African culture.
There’s plenty to eat and drink for sale, like mnazi, a drink made from coconut, and madafu, which is fresh
coconut milk. There are vegetables or meat dishes, often very hot and served on rice. Or try nyama choma, made by
beef over a fire.

What goes into mind when you think of kung fu, also known as wushu Maybe the image of Shaolin monks
fighting with a serious look in their eyes, or popular children’s movies like Kung Fu Panda.
Recently, Laurence J. Brahm, a documentary filmmaker from the United States, Brahm began a journey of a
kung fu pilgrimage(朝圣) , traveling to cities in China and the US to search for the origin(起源) .
Brahm himself is a kung fu lover who has been practicing for more than 40 years. For him, practicing this
craft was more than fun.
Around 10 years ago, Brahm was unable to use one of his legs for about two years. But by practicing martial
arts (武术) , he was able to recover step by step. Now, kung fu has become a daily activity for him.
“Martial arts can help us connect our body, connect our blood flow, and also help connect us into our
environment to increase our awareness.” Brahm said.
Still others find other meanings in the practice.
“Chinese kung fu is full of Chinese philosophies(哲学) and core values”, HongKong actor Bruce Leung told
Xinhua.
Non-fight is one of these values, which is shown both in the name and the practice. Wu, is made up of two
characters—age, and zhi, meaning “to stop”. So Brahm’s sees Kung fu as “a mirror of Chinese culture” .
The traditional values of kung fu, actually, are in the minds of all Chinese people. Why does China want to be
in harmony with other nations “It’s part of the psychology(心理) . Brahm also believes that today’s world needs
to restart equal exchanges between countries, and that culture and sports, such as kung fu.”
23 .What does Laurence J. Brahm explore in Searching for kung Fu
A .Styles of kung fu. B .People’s impressions of kung fu.
C .Functions of kung fu. D .The history and meaning of kung fu.
24 .Which of the following would Brahm agree with about kung fu
A .It’s a way to kill time. B .It’s a way to make money.
C .It’s a way to stay healthy. D .It’s a way to keep awake.
25 .The purpose of Paragraph 8 is to explain .
A .the core value of Chinese kung fu B .the history of Chinese kung fu
C .the structure of the Chinese word “wu” D .the beginning movement in kung fu
26 .Which of the following proves kung fu is “a mirror of Chinese culture”
A .It influences China’s policy about sports.
B .It can spread Chinese culture worldwide.
C .It shows the world the importance of Chinese culture.
D .Its values are seen in China’s attitude to other countries.

Medicine development is a dangerous and expensive business. Many possibly useful medicine fails to cut the mustard during the experiments. One reason is that medicine which works on lab animals may not work quite so
well in human tests.
Being able to pick winners and losers as early as possible would save money, and the One Health Company
thinks it may have found a way. It is offering to help medical groups test their cancer medicine on sick pets.
There are several advantages. By treating animals with cancers, it hopes to avoid a problem with modern animal research, which is that the “model”animals and diseases that are used to test medicine are not always good
stand-ins (替身) for the natural illness. For example, mice used to test cancer medicine may have had their tumors
(肿瘤) placed into their bodies (免疫系统) weakened with medicine.
Another advantage is that pet owners who are very knowledgeable about their four-legged friends can take care of their pets. They are likely to report even small changes in behaviors. However, lab animals are checked far
less often.
Perhaps the most useful aspect of using pets for medicine experiments, however, is that there is no law on animals’ medical records. One Health has been able to get 98% of records on animals from hospitals—a number
that is impossible for humans.
That allows the company to find the right animals for a medicine experiment.
Based on the advantages above, the company hopes that pets will prove useful in other diseases in addition to cancers. Horses, for example, seem to be good stand-ins for humans when it comes to arthritis ( 关节炎) . Cats,
meanwhile, may be useful in breast cancer research.
27 .What do the underlined words “cut the mustard” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A .Reduce the pain B .Reach the goal
C .Change the test results D .Tell the differences
28 .Which of the following is NOT an advantage of One Health’s idea It makes sure .
A .the animals with natural diseases are used.
B .the model animals are checked more often.
C .most animals’ medical records are possible to get.
D .the model animals are in healthy condition.
29 .Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage
A .
B .
C .
D .
30 .The best title for this passage would be .
A .How to improve medicine experiments
B .Help sick pets, help human beings
C .The development of medicine experiments
D .How to deal with some pet diseases

I’m Li Hua. Great changes have happened to me in the past three years.

Another change is my way to learn English words. You can’t imagine how difficult it was for me to master
words. Now I learn by reading a lot and it’s really helpful.
However, the relationship with my parents is becoming worse. We’re not so close as before. I often shout back loudly when they prevent me from doing something. I think I’m old enough to make my own decision. How I wish
we can understand each other better!
