“I watched it 150 times before I posted it because I’m just watching it and its making me emotional watching it and I just wanted people to feel what I felt watching it,” Lobdell said of his motivation to share the video of him and his son Isaiah.
Lobdell said even though he often showers his sons, Hudson and Isaiah, with hugs and kisses, the boys, who are now 6 and 8, still like to stop him before he leaves for work and occasionally request one more hug from him.
“They’ll catch me in the garage or come out, like Isaiah did that morning, and they’ll stop me for an extra hug,” Lobdell, an ironworker in Constantia, New York, explained. “They just do it randomly from time to time and I just love that they do that.”
“I always try to make sure that I’m reciprocating that love that they’re trying to show me,” he continued. “It’s a rough world out there and I don’t ever want my kids to ever feel that they can’t show me love or feel in any way that they’re not totally and completely loved by their parents.”
Lobdell said he encourages other parents to “be as present as possible” with their kids and take the opportunity to spend time with them because “time flies by so fast”. Kids everywhere love to play. And they know a ball is a perfect thing to play with. Now scientists at London’s Queen Mary University report that bumblebees seem to know the same thing, making bumblebees the first insects known to play. When people talk about “play”, they’re describing an animal doing something that doesn’t really seem to help it. They’re not doing the action to get food or shelter or another similar “reward”. Play usually happens when a creature is relaxed and is often repeated.
However, scientists think many animals and birds’ playing is a kind of training for things they’ll have to deal with in later life. But before this, there were no reports of insects playing.
Scientists at Dr. Chittka’s lab, carried out an experiment. First, they tagged (贴标签) 45 young bumblebees, both male and female, between 1 and 23 days old. The tags made the bees easier to identify and follow.
The scientists setup a clear pathway from the bumblebees’ nest to a feeding area. On either side of the open pathway, the researchers placed small colored wooden balls. On one side of the path, the balls were attached and couldn’t move. On the other side, the balls could roll around. It turned out that the bumblebees weren’t interested in the unmovable balls, but they made lots of visits to the rolling balls.
Grabbing the balls with their legs, the bees would flap(拍打) their wings to pull on the balls, causing them to roll. The 45 tagged bumblebees rolled balls 910 times during the experiment. Though some only did it once, others did it a lot. The younger bumblebees spent more time rolling balls. Males seemed more likely to play than females.
“It’s not clear why the bees roll the b also r whether they enjoy it. But the experiment raises important questions about how the insects’ minds work and whether they have feelings. With further research, the future will hold surprises and answers in store for us,” said Dr. Chittka.
28. What is the purpose of animals’ play according to scientists
A. To find ideal shelter. B. To receive extra rewards.
C. To develop survival skills. D. To get their fellows’ attention.
29. What did Dr. Chittka’s experiment focus on
A. Bumblebees’ categories. B. Bumblebees’ habitats.
C. Bumblebees’ intelligence. D. Bumblebees’ behavior.
30. What was the result of the experiment
A. Younger male bumblebees preferred to roll the balls.
B. Bumblebees possessed different wing beat frequency.
C. Bumblebees could distinguish balls of different colors.
D. A specially-built pathway helped bumblebees find food.
31. What is Dr. Chittka’s attitude to their future research
A. Uncertain. B. Doubtful. C. Optimistic. D. Critical.

More people who feel stressed about living in cities have been seeking protection in green spaces for the proven positive impacts on physical and mental health, but the benefits of “blue space”—these a and coastline, but also rivers, lakes, canals, waterfalls, even fountains—are less well advertised, yet the science has kept in place for at least a decade: being by water is good for body and mind.
“Many of the processes are exactly the same as with green space—with some added benefits,” says Dr Mathew White, a senior lecturer at the University of Exeter.
White says there are three established pathways by which the presence of water is positively related to health and happiness. First, there are the beneficial environmental factors, such as less polluted air and more sunlight. Second, people who live by water tend to be more physically active. Third—and this is where blue space seems to have an advantage over other natural environments—water has a psychological recovery effect. When you are sailing, surfing or swimming, says White, “you’re really in step with natural forces there.”
Catherine Kelly is a wellness practitioner who teaches classes in “mindfulness by the sea”. She says the sea has a quality that can make people thoughtful.
“To go to these a means letting go,” says Kelly. “It could be lying on a beach or somebody handing you a cocktail. For somebody else, it could be a wild, empty coast. But there is this really human sense of: ‘Oh, look, there’s the sea’—and the shoulders drop.”
32. Why are blue spaces less popular than green spaces
A. Because green spaces are good to people’s health.
B. Because the benefits of green spaces are better advertised.
C. Because green spaces have more benefits than blue spaces.
D. Because little research has been done on blue spaces.
33. Where is blue space better than other natural environments according to White
A. Water helps people restore mental health.
B. Where there’s water, there’s fresh air.
C. People living near water are healthier.
D. The sea can make people lost in deep thought.
34. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. The sea will put you at ease.
B. The sea will hurt your shoulder.
C. The sea will bring you loneliness.
D. The sea will make you feel down.
35. What is the best title for the passage
A. People in cities prefer green spaces.
B. Blue spaces benefit your body and mind.
C. Green spaces have been out of date.
D. Ways to keep us healthy.
