Lesson Plan for PEP B4U1 Reading and Thinking: TU Youyou Awarded Nobel Prize & Learning about your Language: Build up your vocabulary 二、教学过程(共2课时,每课时20分钟) Activity 1: Self-directed questioning before actual reading This activity is designed to prepare for Aim 1. Step 1. Show Ss a picture of TU Youyou. T: Are you familiar with her Do you know anything about her Write down Physiology or Medicine on the blackboard. Q: What did she do to win the prize T writes artemisinin and malaria on the blackboard, underlines the syllables, and leads students to read aloud. 【设计意图】在热身阶段,执教老师利用屠呦呦姓名出处,激活学生对屠呦呦的已有认知,并且导入本课中关键生词,带领学生根据音节来拼读单词。生词的导入会减轻学生后续阅读和形成回答过程中的认知负荷,从而比较流畅地完成后续任务。 Step 2. Self-directed questioning 1. Present the title of the passage: TU YOUYOU AWARDED THE NOBEL PRIZE, 6 October 2015 Q: Focus on the title. Can you guess where you would most possibly find this passage A: From a newspaper, because there is a very clear date. 【设计意图】通过对文体的理解,学生会有一个非常清晰的话题导向型预测,即专题报道的主要内容构成,可以对后文进行有效预测,来帮助他们更有针对性地搜索信息,从宏观视角下深入理解语篇内容。 Activity 2: Self-directed reading to probe into the NEWS and the STORY This activity is designed for Aims 1 and 2. Step 1: Deep learning Direct answers to the basic questions The teacher underlines the answers directly on the screen. Q1: Who is Tu A: She is a committed and patient scientist. Q2: What motivated her to find artemisinin A: In 1967, the government formed a team of scientists with the objective of discovering a new treatment for malaria. Q3: And why did she win the prize A: Her research led to the discovery of malaria. 【设计意图】训练学生快速定位关键信息的阅读能力,并且以身示范,培养学生随手记笔记和圈画关键信息的阅读习惯。 What is the significance of finding artemisinin Show students the first paragraph with two boldfaced words: crucial and vital. Q1: Can you guess the meaning of these two words according to the context A: It means essential, extremely important, or key part. Q2: Can you find any evidence to show why artemisinin is crucial and vital A: hundreds of thousands of; millions of; Over 200 million; about 600,000; 100,000 lives Q3: Are there more small words indicating the same idea Circle the word “new” on the screen as an example. A: around the world; each year; a year; alone… They do not only show that the disease was spread all over the world, killing countless people, but also show the frequency of the high death rate. 【设计意图】学生能通过上下文猜测crucial和vital的词意。然后关注到行文中间的相关证据,比如较直观的,具有新闻特点的大数字。为了感知语言,在教师带领下去关注比较容易被忽视的形容词和副词,从中感悟到语言以内容为导向,为内容服务的特点。 How did Tu feel about being awarded the prize Q1: So how did Tu Youyou feel about being awarded the prize Where can you find the answer A: In the last paragraph. The teacher shows them the fourth paragraph on the slide. Underline or circle the words and phrases as students mention them. Write down the feeling words next to the underlined or circled phrases respectively. Q2: After analyzing what is the significance of finding artemisinin to the world, then what is it to China A: Traditional Chinese medicine was never recognized by the international medical community, but when artemisinin proved its value, it also stood up for the great Chinese medicine and Chinese culture! 【设计意图】引导学生在文本语言和深层内涵中建立联系。 从屠呦呦的引言中,查找一些她独特的表述方式,诸如反复强调的Chinese这一信息中感知她民族自豪情绪。即使没有直接的信息,学生依然可以感知她的获奖感受和态度。 How was artemisinin discovered Q1: Have you ever done any science experiments Say, chemistry, biology, or physics So, in general, what would you do before you start the experiments A: You start with reviewing the textbook, then doing experiments and testing results! Let’s read and find out the stages of discovering artemisinin. The teacher shows a sample stage to students and lets them list stages with summarized subheads. Stage 1: Studying malaria patients A: Stage 2: reviewing ancient texts Stage 3: Trying different ways to get the extract Stage 4: Testing the medicine Q2: Can you categorize the research-related verbs in the following stages into Column A: “what did Tu/her team do ” and Column B: “What was the purpose/result ” a. Categorize research-related verbs b. All categorized research-related verbs presented and teacher leads students to sense the language Q3: Seeing the whole procedure, what impresses you How would you feel about the scientific research A: Many repeated verbs, like “tested” and “find”. It probably shows that the scientific research is dull, full of repeated work and constant failures. Q4: Then can you sense what kind of person is Tu from this procedure A: She is committed and patient. She never gave up. Q5: Then can you find more descriptive words/supporting details to show her qualities 【设计意图】将一般实验阶段迁移到青蒿素的发现过程,再将其词汇提炼概括到屠呦呦的人物品质,学生深刻体会这一教学环节的关键所在:动作描写体现出人物内心信念和力量,外在表现反映真我。在描写性语言的学习中,领会动作与性格的一致性,以读促写。 What kind of person is Tu T: Tu said it was a team work, but still the Nobel Prize was presented to her alone. Teacher shows Ss the subjects of every research process. Q1: What role did she play in the team A: leader, head, soul, backbone… Q2: Very impressive finding! From your perspective, what kind of person is Tu A: Responsible, self-sacrificing, brave; leadership, core, spirit, soul … Activity 3: Develop a framework to evaluate whether Tu is a person of achievement, success and/or value and author a presentation. This activity is designed for Aim 3. Show students the quote from opening page “Try to become not a man of success, but try rather to become a man of value.” And let them discuss: Based on what we have learned about Tu Youyou, would you make a presentation on A person of achievement with your understanding of these three concepts: achievement, success, and value 【设计目的】学生在通读文章之后,经过自己和老师引领地分析,对“成就”、“成功”和“价值”三者地内在关系有了一个更深刻而成熟的认识。他们运用已习得的知识在课堂中展示自己对上述三个概念的理解认知,并结合屠呦呦的故事展开讨论,复现运用课堂所学词汇,锻炼思维迁移,内化加深文本含义。融合新老知识,形成属于自己的观点和理论支撑。 Assignment Polish your presentation on A person of achievement and put it into a written piece. S1: I think she was the true leader of the team. Because she is very decisive and intelligent. She was the one who decided the route of TCM research to find effective substance.
S2: She is also the backbone of the team. When plenty of experiments failed, her team members must want to give up on wormwood. But as the text says, Tu would not acknowledge to defeat. She insisted on carrying on with the research, which finally led to success.
Try to become not a man of success, but try rather to become a man of value.

discussion
S: I think success is what all human want to get. It is a nature. But value is the essential bridge to help us get there. Take Tu Youyou as an example, she spent a life-long time on finding effective substance to treat malaria. Despite all the difficulties and failures that she encountered, she never acknowledged to defeat. This is virtue. And even knowing the danger and risks, she still insisted on testing medicine one herself. It is moral. Those are the most valuable things that helped Tu Youyou become a person of success and person of achievement.

I said, "dad, you might leave now.” But he looked out of the window and said,” I’m going to buy you some tangerines. You just stay here. Don't move around.” I caught sight of several vendors waiting for customers outside the railings beyond a platform. But to reach that platform would require crossing the railway track and doing some climbing up and down. That would be a strenuous job for father, who was fat. I wanted to do all that myself, but he stopped me, so I could do nothing but let him go. I watched him hobble towards the railway track in his black skullcap, black cloth mandarin jacket and dark blue cotton-padded cloth ling gown. He had little trouble climbing down the railway track, but it was a lot more difficult for him to climb up that platform after crossing the railway track. His hands held onto the upper part of the platform, his legs huddled up and his corpulent body tipped slightly towards the left, obviously making an enormous exertion. While I was watching him from behind, tears gushed from my eyes.
Writing sample
I quickly wiped them away lest he or others should catch me crying. The next moment when I looked out of the window again, father was already on the way back, holding bright red tangerines in both hands. In crossing the railway track, he first put the tangerines on the ground, climbed down slowly and then picked them up again. When he came near the train, I hurried out to help him by hand. After boarding the train with me, he laid all the tangerines on my overcoat, and patting the dirt off his clothes, he looked somewhat relieved and said after a while,” I must be going now. Don’t forget to write me from Beijing!” I gazed after his back retreating out of the carriage. After a few steps, he looked back at me and said, "Go back to your seat. Don’t leave your things alone." I, however, did not go back to my seat until his figure was lost among crowds of people hurrying to and from and no longer visible. My eyes were again wet with tears.教学设计
