I remember my grandmother preparing fried dumplings and curry mutton, jazz music playing in the background. Food was our greatest treasure. Food brought the family together. Food celebrated new beginnings and eased the wounds of life’s untimely endings. When I was 8, I was diagnosed with a muscle disease, which caused me to spend most of my childhood in hospital. rooms and wheelchairs, slowly gaining weight by swallowing prednisone (肾上腺皮质激素) hidden inside mint chocolate chip ice cream. My mom made it her duty to help me lose the weight through strict dieting. I’ve tried every single one. In fairness, my mother did the best she could. As a single mom, she felt this brought us closer. However, as an adult, I began to experience a paralyzing fear of food. My “I’ll start a new diet on Monday” mind-set lasted for 16 years as I uncontrollably ate and abused my body. I was worried that I was not attractive enough. So obsessed and afraid no one would hire me as an actress if I didn’t win the battle with the numbers on the scale, in February 2011 I was send to hospital. We do extreme things to our bodies because of those numbers, numbers that cannot talk with us or love us. I have had to stop judging my belly, stop starving myself, stop getting on the scale and staring at those numbers. I have come to the realization that my life is more important than those numbers on the scale and that the quality of the life I live is more important than how I look in the mirror.24.What role did food play in author’s childhood A.It strengthened the family bends.B.It was a source of family income.C.It’s the only treasure the family had.D.It’s the way to celebrate Jamaican tradition.25.What might be the initial reason of the author’s strict dieting A.The beauty trend. B.Her muscle disease treatment.C.Her mother’s expectation. D.Anxiety about her career.26.How did the author feel about her dieting A.It was fruitful. B.It way useless.C.It made her frightened of food. D.It brought her and Mom closer.27.What attitude does the author have to the numbers on the scale now A.Uncaring. B.Deeply skeptical.C.Dismissive. D.Particularly concerned.CProper questioning has become a lost art. The curious four-year-old asks a lot of questions-incessant streams of “Why ” and “Why not “ might sound familiar-but as we grow older, our questioning decreases. In a recent survey of more than 200 of our clients, we found that those with children estimated that 70-80% of their kids’ dialogues with others were comprised of questions. But those same clients said that only 15-25% of their own interactions consisted of questions. Why the drop of Think back to your time growing up and in school. Chances are you received the most recognition or reward when you got the correct answers. Later in life, that motivator continues. At work, we often reward those who answer questions, not those who ask them. Questioning conventional wisdom can even lead to being distanced, or considered a threat.Because expectations for decision-making have gone from ”get it done soon“ to ”get it done now“ to ”it should have been done yesterday, “ we tend to jump to conclusions instead of asking more questions. And the unfortunate side effect of not asking enough questions is poor decision-making. That’s why it’s vital that we slow down and take the time to ask more and better questions. At best, we’ll arrive at better conclusions. At worst we’ll avoid a lot of rework later on.Aside from not speaking up enough, many professionals don’t think about how different types of questions can lead to different outcomes. We should lead a conversation by asking the right kinds of questions, based on the problem we’re trying to solve. In some cases, we’ll want to expand our view of the problem rather than keeping it narrowly focused. In others, we may want to challenge basic assumptions or confirm our understanding in order to feel more confident in our conclusions. Therefore, asking the right kinds of questions is what counts in achieving a goal.28.What does the underlined word ”incessant“ in paragraph 1 most probably mean A.Constant. B.Random. C.Noisy. D.Innocent.29.What accounts for the decline of questioning in adulthood A.One poses a threat to the company if they ask questions.B.Those who ask questions don’t necessarily get positive feedback.C.One doesn’t have as many opportunities as they did in childhood.D.Those who question popular beliefs don’t have interpersonal skills.30.What can we infer from paragraph 3 A.Redoing is unavoidable despite thoughtful questions.B.Better questions can surely result in desirable outcomes.C.Some people think it can’t be too fast to make a decision.D.We’ll make reasonable decisions as long as we ask questions.31.What might the author continue talking about A.Proper questions that should be raised.B.Important goals that we are to achieve.C.Right kinds of answers to the questions.D.The reasons for the loss of questioning art.DFor the perfect cup of tea, does one add milk to boiling water, or the opposite Neither, based on a new research in the journal Current Biology. What must be prepared first, instead, are the microbes(微生物).Previous studies have shown that the presence of the right microbes can enhance the absorption of critical nutrients like iron, phosphorus (磷) and nitrogen (氮).Tea experts Wei Xin and Wenxin Tang at Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in China were attracted by it because tea plants rely upon nitrogen-rich ammonium (铵)in the soil around their roots to produce theanine, an amino acid (氨基酸) that generates their special pleasant flavors. Collecting the roots and leaves of 17 different tea types at different times of year, Dr Xin and Dr Tang found that theanine production varied widely, even among similar teas. Some highly valued oolong teas, such as Rougui, produced a lot of the compound, whereas others, such as Maoxie, produced less. After growing these two types under identical conditions, the researchers collected soil samples and used genetic analysis to identify which microbes were present around the roots. The microbes of the two were very different. Crucially, Rougui had more microbes associated with nitrogen than did Maoxie. Consequently, Rougui also showed a greater ability to absorb nitrogen from ammonium in the soil. These differences were particularly clear in the autumn, when the roots were accumulating theanine. To explore further, the researchers created a community of microbes that resembled the community found around autumnal Rougui roots and applied them to the roots of Maoxie plants. They report that this not only enhanced root growth in Maoxie seedlings by giving them a nitrogen boost, but also nearly tripled the theanine in the leaves.Flavors aside, what they found has the potential to make a wider environmental impact. Most farmers add some form of nitrogen to their soil to enhance growth. While some of this is absorbed by plants, most runs off during heavy rains and ends up polluting natural water bodies. When the researchers applied their microbial mixture to soil, they found that, just as with Maoxie, the newcomers enhanced nitrogen uptake. This suggests that these microbes have the potential to create new flavors while also reducing agricultural pollution. That should be everyone’s cup of tea.32.Which is the key factor in enhancing tea’s flavor A.Iron. B.Phosphorus. C.Theanine. D.Oxygen.33.Why are Rougui and Maoxie grown in the research A.To set an example. B.To make a comparison.C.To prove a conclusion. D.To attract Chinese readers.34.Based on the text, which of the following is TRUE A.Nitrogen is commonly used in agriculture. B.Tea has more health benefits than expected.C.When to add milk to a cup of tea is unknown. D.Maoxie can taste like Rougui after improvement.35.What can be a suitable title for the text A.Tea and its flavor B.Microbes and teaC.Tea’s new benefits D.Everyone’s cup of tea第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Lying awake for hours before falling asleep is a common problem. Even if you can finally fall asleep, taking too long to fall asleep can lead to too few hours of sleep altogether. 36 So people having trouble falling asleep always wonder how they can sleep well.Parents know from experience that gentle music can help babies fall asleep. Science supports this, showing that children of all ages, from babies to elementary school children, sleep better after listening to comfortable music. Fortunately, children aren’t the only ones who can benefit from gentle music before bedtime. 37Listening to music likely improves sleep for more than one reason. Music can promote sleep directly by affecting your physiology (生理机能). 38 Besides, it can also promote sleep by becoming a healthy bedtime habit. Many people can’t fall asleep quickly because stressful and worrying thoughts keep them awake at night. By listening to music, the mind has something else to focus on. With time, the practice of listening to music at bedtime becomes more effective as the brain positively associates music with sleep.39 Studies have looked at many types of music and playlists but there isn’t a clear answer about the best music for sleep. What we do know is that researchers have typically used either a self-made playlist or one that has been designed especially with sleep in mind. One of the most important things on how music affects a person’s body is their own musical preferences. 40 For those who don’t want to design their own playlist, online music services have stepped in and usually offer playlists for sleep or relaxation.A.It can guarantee sufficient sleep.B.It’s natural to wonder about the best type of music for sleep.C.The quality and quantity of our sleep become poor as we age.D.Listening to music can reduce your stress and inspire positive feelings.E.This can have a serious effect on a person’s quality of life if it continues.F.People across age groups report better sleep quality after listening to soft music.G.Useful personal playlists may include relaxing songs that have helped with sleep in the past.第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共15小题:每小题1分,满分15分)阅读下面短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。I am employed in an educational institution. She was just living on leftovers and junk. What’s worse, she hadn’t paid the house rent.Standing before the ATM, Mrs. Johnson put in her card and entered her password. Upon reaching her apartment door, she saw an envelope with her name on it in the mailbox.Once she entered the house and kept the grocery bag on the kitchen counter, she slid the envelope out and opened it. It was an invitation for reunion from the school where she had taught all her life, but she didn’t feel like going there. After having dinner, the old lady picked up her phone, hoping to find a job. Well, it is really great to be back at university again. The thing that I wanted to tell you today is this: Education is important. When I came to the US, I was only thinking about being a cook, but I could not read the newspaper. And I could not understand the news on television or movies or anything like this. So, I entered the city college to take English classes for foreign students. I was very proud that I was going to a college because no one in my family ever went to any college or to any university. You know, when you’re 15 years old in my country, you finish school and then you learn something to make a living. And that’s exactly what I did. A year later, I came to America. Luckily, I met a very good teacher who encouraged me to take some math classes, business classes, and history classes, and I became a full-time college student. And today, when I look back, I’m so happy because you never know where life will take you. Gradually, I started making money because I was really good at math. You know, working out problems with math is so important. This is something that I learned when I started my own business, which is doing really well.第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。AThe Best Brand AwardsThe Best Brand Awards is an international competition that recognizes the concept and design of brands from around the globe. D.Particularly concerned.【答案】24.A 25.B 26.C 27.A【导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者因为体重的数字对自己做出极端的事情,然后意识到生命比这些数字更重要,自己生活的质量比自己在镜子里的样子更重要。24.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“Food brought the family together.(食物使一家人团聚在一起。)”可知,在作者的童年,食物是加强家庭联系的纽带。故选A。25.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“When I was 8, I was diagnosed with a muscle disease, which caused me to spend most of my childhood in hospital. rooms and wheelchairs, slowly gaining weight by swallowing prednisone (肾上腺皮质激素) hidden inside mint chocolate chip ice cream. My mom made it her duty to help me lose the weight through strict dieting.(当我8岁的时候,我被诊断出患有肌肉疾病,这导致我童年的大部分时间都在医院里度过。 根据文章第二段“However, as an adult, I began to experience a paralyzing fear of food.(然而,作为一个成年人,我开始体验到对食物的极度恐惧。)” 可知,作者因为过度节食而对食物感到害怕。故选C。27.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“I have come to the realization that my life is more important than those numbers on the scale and that the quality of the life I live is more important than how I look in the mirror.(我开始意识到,我的生命比体重秤上的数字更重要,我的生活质量比我在镜子里的样子更重要。)”可推知,作者现在对自己的体重毫不在意。故选A。CProper questioning has become a lost art. B.Random. C.Noisy. D.Innocent.29.What accounts for the decline of questioning in adulthood A.One poses a threat to the company if they ask questions.B.Those who ask questions don’t necessarily get positive feedback.C.One doesn’t have as many opportunities as they did in childhood.D.Those who question popular beliefs don’t have interpersonal skills.30.What can we infer from paragraph 3 A.Redoing is unavoidable despite thoughtful questions.B.Better questions can surely result in desirable outcomes.C.Some people think it can’t be too fast to make a decision.D.We’ll make reasonable decisions as long as we ask questions.31.What might the author continue talking about A.Proper questions that should be raised.B.Important goals that we are to achieve.C.Right kinds of answers to the questions.D.The reasons for the loss of questioning art.【答案】28.A 29.B 30.C 31.A【导语】这是一篇说明文。短文介绍了恰当的提问已经成为一门失传的艺术,分析了原因以及鼓励人们恰当的提问。28.词句猜测题。根据第一段“The curious four-year-old”(好奇的四岁孩子以及)“以及as we grow older, our questioning decreases”( 但随着年龄的增长,我们的提问会减少)可知,这个好奇的四岁孩子问了很多问题——没完没了地问“为什么 ”和“为什么不呢 所以划线词的意思是“持续不断的”。故选A项。29.细节理解题。根据第二段“Think back to your time growing up and in school. Chances are you received the most recognition or reward when you got the correct answers. Later in life, that motivator continues. And the unfortunate side effect of not asking enough questions is poor decision-making.”( 因为对决策的期望已经从“尽快完成”变成了“现在完成”,再变成了“昨天就应该完成”,我们倾向于直接下结论,而不是问更多的问题。没有问足够多的问题的副作用是糟糕的决策。)可知,有些人认为做决定不能太快。故选C项。31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Therefore, asking the right kinds of questions is what counts in achieving a goal.”( 因此,问正确的问题是实现目标的关键。)可知,接下来要讨论应该提出适当的问题。故选A项。DFor the perfect cup of tea, does one add milk to boiling water, or the opposite Neither, based on a new research in the journal Current Biology. D.Maoxie can taste like Rougui after improvement.35.What can be a suitable title for the text A.Tea and its flavor B.Microbes and teaC.Tea’s new benefits D.Everyone’s cup of tea【答案】32.C 33.B 34.A 35.B【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要探讨微生物如何在茶叶种植的过程中给茶叶带来了更好的口味。32.细节理解题。根据第三段“Tea experts Wei Xin and Wenxin Tang at Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in China were attracted by it because tea plants rely upon nitrogen-rich ammonium (铵)in the soil around their roots to produce theanine, an amino acid (氨基酸) that generates their special pleasant flavors.(中国福建农林大学的茶叶专家辛伟和唐文新被它所吸引,因为茶树依靠根部周围土壤中富含氮的铵来产生茶氨酸,这种氨基酸能产生独特的宜人味道)”可知,提升茶味的关键因素是茶氨酸。故选C。33.细节理解题。根据第四段“After growing these two types under identical conditions, the researchers collected soil samples and used genetic analysis to identify which microbes were present around the roots. The microbes of the two were very different. Crucially, Rougui had more microbes associated with nitrogen than did Maoxie. 40 For those who don’t want to design their own playlist, online music services have stepped in and usually offer playlists for sleep or relaxation.A.It can guarantee sufficient sleep.B.It’s natural to wonder about the best type of music for sleep.C.The quality and quantity of our sleep become poor as we age.D.Listening to music can reduce your stress and inspire positive feelings.E.This can have a serious effect on a person’s quality of life if it continues.F.People across age groups report better sleep quality after listening to soft music.G.Useful personal playlists may include relaxing songs that have helped with sleep in the past.【答案】36.E 37.F 38.D 39.B 40.G【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了音乐可以改善睡眠,解释了背后的原因。36.根据上文“Even if you can finally fall asleep, taking too long to fall asleep can lead to too few hours of sleep altogether.(即使你最终能睡着,花太长时间入睡也会导致睡眠时间太少)”以及后文“So people having trouble falling asleep always wonder how they can sleep well.(所以入睡困难的人总是想知道他们如何才能睡得好)”可知,本句承接上文,说明花太长时间入睡的情况对人们的影响,后文给出解决方案。故E选项“如果这种情况持续下去,会对一个人的生活质量产生严重的影响”符合语境,故选E。37.根据上文“Parents know from experience that gentle music can help babies fall asleep. She was just living on leftovers and junk. What’s worse, she hadn’t paid the house rent.Standing before the ATM, Mrs. Johnson put in her card and entered her password. In no time, she saw a five-dollar bill slide out of the machine. The old lady was so focused on the dollar bill that she barely looked at the screen.Holding a bag full of about-outdated food items, the old lady slowly walked towards her house. A message caught her attention, which was a notice from her bank regarding her cash withdrawal. She read the message and was about to exit it when the remaining account balance caught her attention. A hundred thousand dollars! ! !The next day, Mrs. Johnson visited the bank, thinking this was a big mistake. After checking, the bank told her the records showed that Norma Tyler transferred the money to her account. There was no mistake. However, Mrs. Johnson didn’t know any Norma Tyler! After thinking about all her friends, relatives and acquaintances, Mrs. Johnson could only think of one Norma— one of the students who never performed well in class. The following evening, Mrs. Johnson entered the event. A young lady was introducing herself, saying her name was Norma Tyler. Upon hearing the familiar name, Mrs. Johnson stopped and turned around. Mrs. Johnson could see the then-shy girl now full of confidence, making her feel so proud. But why did Norma send her a hundred thousand dollars Norma said she wanted to thank a special teacher who never gave up on her. She pointed towards Mrs. Johnson. Suddenly, all the heads in the room turned towards Mrs. Johnson before a round of applause broke the momentary silence. Norma learned about Mrs. Johnson’s struggle after her husband’s death and immediately decided to start an online collection to help her, and in no time, classmates raised a hundred thousand dollars for her.
