Instructional design for Unit4 History and Traditions Reading: What’s in a name

Analysis of text Theme and content (What ) The theme of this unit is “human and society” and the topic is history and culture. What’s in a name is an exposition that talks about the name’s changes, history and culture of the UK. Structure (How) This article follows a clear structure and use the time order to introduce the UK logically. Author’s intention (Why) To introduce the history and culture of the UK to help students have a better understanding of this country.
Analysis of students Cognitive psychology: Most students are poor in English, but they are very active and have a good attitude towards learning English. They have interest in knowing the history of the UK and want to know more about what is behind this name. Knowledge base: Students have mastered some basic reading skills like skimming and scanning. However they are still not familiar with the related vocabulary, so they may feel difficult and even fear to answer questions. Therefore pair work and group discussion can help ease the emotional baggage.
Teaching objectives (At the end of the class, Ss will be able to:) Language competence comprehend the history and development of the UK. know how to tell the story of a country according to time order. Learning ability improve cooperative spirit by pair work and teamwork. Thinking quality draw a mind-map of the article compare the similarities and differences between the UK and China. Culture awareness know the significance of learning history, broaden their horizons and develop the awareness of national pride.
