Students enthusiastically participated in the activities, showing a great interest in wildlife conservation. (第二节 满分25分) 参考范文
Paragraph 1: Things in the shopping cart like the soap all dropped on the ground. I watched in shock as the lady bent down slowly and tried hard to collect her things. I turned to my friend and asked, “Shall we go and help her ” “It is not we who knocked her shopping cart over,” my friend said impatiently, walking ahead. I stood there for a moment, suddenly feeling sorry for this pitiful lady. “I'll help her,” I said with determination.
Paragraph 2: Then my friend continued walking on while I went to the lady. “Let me help you,” I said as I helped her get the cart up. The lady looked up and said tearfully, “Thank you!” Then I helped her put things back into her cart. To my surprise, some passers-by joined me, including my friend. With everything put into her cart, my friend and I helped push it to her house. If it were not for the incident, we would have had delicious ice cream to eat, but we didn't feel regretful, for what we did was meaningful.

M: Our listener’s question this week comes from Kenny Bailey who has been listening to our program since 2006. And he wants us to give some advice on budget hotels on Mexico’s Pacific coast. We’ll focus on the top 3 today.
The first one on our list is Hotel Posada Freeman. This 12-storey hotel sits just across the street from Olas Altas Beach. It has bright, comfortable rooms with ocean views, a top-floor bar and an outdoor pool on the 11th floor. A single room costs only about $15 a night.
Then there is Casa Roxana Bungalows. It’s the perfect choice for an adventurer, as the hotel is located in an area that is known for its jungle tours. The hotel is simply furnished but perfectly clean, with double beds, air conditioning and reliable Wi-Fi. Each room costs $20 a night.
And last but not least, Hotel Posada La Mision. This family-friendly place overlooks the east end of Playa Madera. What makes it special is its ancient red wood windows. And you can enjoy abundant ocean views for $30 a night, at the very most.

But Assefa’s record was far beyond what most people expected. After all, it was only her third time running a marathon.
“I wanted to break the marathon world record,” she said, “But I couldn’t imagine that it would result in a time under 2:12.”
When Assefa was younger, she started by running short races, called sprints. Then she became a middle-distance runner, running the 800 meters (half mile) race. Her best time in the 800 meters was 1 minute and 59 seconds.
Last March, she ran her first marathon. Then last September, she entered the Berlin Marathon. She won, and set a new women’s record for the course, finishing in 2:15:37.
This year, she ran almost four minutes faster than she did last year. In both races, Assefa ran faster in the second half of the race than she did in the first half.
Her time of 2:11:53 was over two minutes faster than the old women’s record (2:14:04), which was set in Chicago in 2019 by Brigid Kosgei of Kenya.
When she finished the race, Assefa kneeled down and kissed the pavement before raising her arms in victory.Though Assefa made it look easy, she said winning the race “…was the result of hard work.” Assefa was coached by Gemedu Dedefo, who has helped train many Ethiopian star runners.

Imagine walking through an ancient city, then climbing a gate tower to take in a wonderful view of the city and its more than 600 year old walls. You can hear the city's heartbeat in the air. This is the Ancient City of Pingyao in Shanxi Province, a place that should definitely be on your travel route if you enjoy history or ancient architecture since its origins can be traced back to more than 2,700 years ago.
Located in the center of Shanxi Province, Pingyao is the hometown of Jin merchants (商人), a group of merchants who actively dominated (支配) a booming commodity market throughout China for more than 500 years, especially during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the city's agriculture and manufacturing industries (制造业) developed rapidly, Following China's reform and opening up in the 1980s, Pingyao struggled with the transition from a managed economy to the current (现在的) market oriented economy. During this time, the city government sought out new ways to break through this economic bottleneck.
Finally in the winter of 1997, opportunity came knocking. Through the efforts of the city government, Pingyao earned its place on the UNESCO World Heritage list, which caused the entire world to take notice of the city.
Since the city's fame has risen, locals in Pingyao have deepened their understanding of the conservation efforts preserving the historical relics in their hometown. Meanwhile the city administration has continued to upgrade (提升) itself through a strategy that follows the pillars (核心) of “conservation, entrepreneurship, development and protection”.
Currently, the city is focused on establishing a sustainable industry that will enable it to continue to develop while also protecting its relics and introducing them to the world.
28. What does the underlined word “transition” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Translation. B. Spread. C. Range. D. Change.
29. What contributed to Pingyao's popularity around the world

Many of the Earth’s creatures die because of humans’ choices. These choices have nothing to do with food or shelter or anything else that helps humans survive. What kills millions of animals all over the world is that humans want to make money by doing so.
People use parts of animals for everything from hats to handbags, from jewelry to ashtrays(烟灰缸) and to make powders that supposedly improve a person’s life. Deciding that a species is endangered and protecting it by law are not always enough. People who kill wildlife illegally rarely get caught.
During the late 1980s, saving elephants became a popular cause. Wildlife protection groups made sure everyone saw pictures or films of elephants with their faces cut off for their ivory. These groups also proved that certain populations of elephants were decreasing. As a result, most people stopped buying objects made of ivory. Laws against poaching (偷猎) were made stronger. Many countries made importing ivory illegal. Killing elephants for their ivory became more risky and less profitable.
However, concern for certain species will become weak after a while. In the late 1970s, people protested against the killing of seal babies. Everyone was shocked to see young seals being killed in their icy habitat. The cruel activity stopped. But ten years later, the number of killed seal babies was higher than ever.
Other animal protection movements have come and gone, such as saving the whales and protecting dolphins. The whale population appears to have increased for now. And the laws are finally changed in America to protect the dolphins that swim with tuna fish in parts of the Pacific Ocean.
In the years to come, people’s attention will probably turn to some other endangered species. Plenty of them urgently need attention. During this time, will the elephants be forgotten
32. What leads to the disappearance of millions of wild animals
A. The growing human population.
B. Humans’ hope of making a fortune.

A. Wildlife protection groups did make great efforts.
B. Importing ivory in all countries was illegal.
C. Those who killed elephants all got caught.
D. Hunting was completely not allowed.
34. Why are seal babies mentioned in Paragraph 4

It was a hot day in the middle of July. I decided to walk to the neighborhood store where it sold my favorite thing, ice cream. I pulled a friend towards the ice cream store, almost passing out from the burning sun on the way.
As we walked on, my friend kept saying that it was too hot. She thought that she was stupid to decide to come with me to buy ice cream. I felt sorry and tried to encourage her. “We're almost there. Just think of the cool and sweet taste of ice cream in your mouth. It'll be worth the walk,” I told her. But I had to admit that the store was quite a distance from our houses. During the journey, my mouth began to become dry and I wanted to drink.
When we were about a block away from the store, I noticed an old lady who was walking in our direction. She was about 70 years old. She had a big back problem, so she was unable to keep her back straight. She was struggling, pushing a shopping cart (购物车) full of things like the soap, bread and water. With each step toward her, we began to see her appearance more clearly. It appeared that she was often unhappy and easy to get angry.
I looked at my friend to see if she had noticed her. I could see that she had and that she disliked the old lady due to the lady's appearance. As we approached the lady pushing the shopping cart, my friend directed me away from the old lady and the cart.
I began to observe other passers-by(路人). They were also trying to avoid her. Suddenly I heard a terrible sound behind me.
I quickly turned around to see what it was. I found the lady's cart had been knocked over (撞翻) by something on the ground.
