“There's a little black woman walking, spraying (喷洒) stuff on the sidewalks and trees on Elizabeth and Florence ...”he told the police. Her neighbor saw her spraying something on the sidewalks and trees and this made him worried. In the call to 911, he described the child as“a little black woman”.
Well, the“little black woman”was actually 9-year-old Bobbi Wilson, a young scientist. The fourth-grader had created her own insecticide (杀虫剂) to fight spotted lanternflies (斑衣蜡蝉). She came across the recipe on TikTok and had recently learned that the harmful species damages trees because they feed on their sap (树液). Bobbi was simply testing out her invention in her neighborhood when the police call was made.
“That's her thing,”her mother Monique Joseph said.“She's going to kill the lanternflies, especially if they're on a tree. That's what she's going to do.” Bobbi's 13-year-old sister, Hayden Wilson, also defended her, noting that Bobbi“was not only doing something amazing for our environment, but she was also doing something that made her feel like a hero”. Luckily, what happened didn't influence Bobbi's spirit and has led to some positive experiences for her.
She has since been recognized by several organizations for her environmental efforts. She has also been invited on special tours. One took place at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. Another was given by the United States Department of Agriculture of New Jersey at a plant where they discussed lanternflies. But that's not where her recognition ends! The Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (ANJEC) honored Bobbi with their Sustainability Award for her work to save trees and fight lanternflies.
“We were excited that she was doing that,”Ann Marchioni of the ANJEC said. Ann added that the organization praises volunteers for being“hands-on” in their community. In addition to the award, she and her family got to visit with a group of black female scientists at Yale University. They showed her various labs and even invited her to donate lanternfly specimens (标本) for the university's work.
24. What made the neighbor call the police
A. A girl climbing trees. B. A girl spraying something.
C. A girl littering the sidewalks. D. A girl testing something dangerous.
25. How did Hayden Wilson feel about her sister's behavior
A. Ashamed. B. Proud. C. Shocked. D. Relieved.
26. What kind of volunteers does ANJEC think highly of
A. Those whose donations help ANJEC.
B. Those who can do something creative in their university.
C. Those whose environmental awareness is quite impressive.
D. Those who can do something practical in their community.
27. Which of the following would best describe Bobbi
A. Creative and determined. B. Watchful and serious.
C. Friendly and generous. D. Talkative and strict.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of nonprofit (非营利的) organizations, but COVID-19 makes it difficult for them to take part, especially for older people. As a result, nonprofit organizations are meeting the challenge of finding new, safe ways to engage with older volunteers.
“COVID-19 has been a real blow to most communities, seriously blocking volunteer participation, but our society needs the talent of these people,”said Marc Freedman, the founder of Encore.org, a nonprofit trying to bridge generational divides.“We know from decades of research that strong social connections and a reason to get up in the morning are key to our well-being as we age,”he added.“So we need to give up the idea of‘stay safe and stay out of the way.'”
Like so much of life in COVID-19, volunteer work has largely moved online. But technology can be a barrier for many older adults — both those who offer and those who receive volunteer services. They are less likely to get and take advantage of the latest technology. Last year 59 percent of Americans age 65 and older had broadband (宽带) Internet connections, about 20 percentage points fewer than those in younger age groups.
None of that has stopped elderly volunteers like Paula Brynen, a 65-year-old Los Angeles resident. Before COVID-19, she volunteered for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS's) Light The Night, an annual fund-raising walk at which participants carry glowing lanterns. Ms. Brynen would help out with setting up the event; nowadays, she focuses on another task.“They usually give volunteers a small list of calls to make,”she said,“but because I worked in fund-raising and have no problem ringing up, they gave me 50 names this year.”
Meanwhile, she is working as a mentor (导师) with Table Wisdom, a St. Louis-based nonprofit that matches older adults with students and young professionals. She connects each week via Zoom with a young environmental engineer in Colombia.“We talk about politics and movie recommendations — I've learned a lot about Colombia, and she's learned about things like Los Angeles's culture.”
28. What does the underlined part“these people”in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Elderly patients. B. Older volunteers.
C. Young professionals. D. Nonprofit organizers.
29. Which of the following would Marc Freedman agree with
A. Having something to do daily benefits older adults.
B. Knowing how to stay connected helps you succeed.
C. It is good for the elderly to get up early in the morning.
D. More efforts should be taken to improve seniors' safety.
30. Why does the author provide the numbers in paragraph 3
A. To express approval for developing technology.
B. To discuss how COVID-19 influenced volunteer work.
C. To show many older people are falling behind technologically.
D. To explain the development of broadband Internet connections.
31. How does Paula Brynen work for the LLS now
A. By taking fund-raising walks. B. By making a lot of phone calls.
C. By giving free speeches via Zoom. D. By instructing students and young adults.

Outside of Asia, Madagascar has the longest tradition of rice production, and this crop is grown in almost all districts of the country. For the Malagasy people, rice is an important part of their diet: many families eat it three times a day, and most of it is homegrown. In Madagascar, however, people earn less than $1.90 per day on average, and the Malagasy population is severely affected by food shortages. Domestic (国内的) production of rice, for example, still does not meet the needs of the island, and the country has to rely heavily on imported rice to help ensure the nation has enough food.
Madagascar has set itself the goal of being rice self-sufficient. To work towards this, an FAO South-South Cooperation project began between China and Madagascar. Chinese experts on rice production came to Madagascar to provide training to farmers on how to grow and harvest a greater-yielding (更高产的) type of rice.
The new kind of rice seeds is better suited to the Malagasy subtropical climate, which consists of a hot and rainy season between November and the end of March and a cooler dry season from May to October. This Weichu rice variety has been especially developed to fit the climatic and soil conditions of Madagascar.
Across three areas of the island, 124 rice farmers took part in the project, working together with a Chinese expert team, to benefit from both theoretical and field training on rice production. To date, the harvest has yielded about 8.45 tonnes on average per hectare (公顷) compared to the 2.8 tonnes per hectare that was harvested before the project. Alain Randrianarivelo, who has farmed rice for more than 20 years, says,“I think this new variety of rice is the future of our agriculture. The yield obtained is breathtaking.”All the other participating farmers think so, too.
For Madagascar as a country, this new variety will allow it to be self-sufficient by considerably reducing the level of rice imports.
32. What did the Chinese experts mainly do in Madagascar
A. They made efforts to improve the land.
B. They developed new rice seeds in poor soil.
C. They introduced ways to earn a good living.
D. They taught locals how to grow a new kind of rice.
33. Why is the Weichu rice variety used in Madagascar
A. It meets the high demands of the Malagasy people.
B. It suits the varying conditions there.
C. It is the best rice variety worldwide.
D. It can be grown twice a year there.
34. What can be inferred about the 124 rice farmers in the project
A. They are far-sighted.
B. They are pioneers in farming.
C. They find the yield fairly satisfying.
D. They doubt the advanced farming technique.
35. What would be the best title for the text
A. Doing experiments in Madagascar
B. Increasing types of Madagascan rice
C. Bringing Madagascar into the future
D. Helping Madagascar become rice self-sufficient

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In an art class my friend Mareya and I took, we had to look at art made by lots of different artists and then try creating our own. We made pencil drawings and paintings using only small dots of paint.
For our very last task, our teacher asked us to paint a portrait of a friend or family member. Mareya and I looked at each other and nodded. We both had the same idea.
“You'll each get one of these art sets,” said Ms. Williams. “Every set contains a small canvas (画布), some tempera paints (蛋彩画颜料), and two foam brushes (泡沫刷). You can paint in any style you choose.”Mareya and I put our sets into our art bags. Then we headed over to her house.
And then our friend Jasmine stopped us.“I was so excited to tell you my amazing news. My family just got the cutest dog named Ginger, and if you want to come over, you can meet her!”Jasmine's house is only a couple of blocks from Mareya's, so after checking in with Mareya's mom, of course we had to go. Ginger was the cutest dog imaginable.“Whenever she's not running around, she's sound asleep in dreamland,”said Jasmine. She led the way to the kitchen. “Do you have time for a snack ”“Sure!”we said.
After we ate some cookies at the kitchen table, Mareya and I stood up to leave. But when we went to pick up our art bags by the front door, we found a big surprise! Mareya pointed at our torn-open art sets.“Something tells me Ginger might not have been sleeping this whole time.”“Oh no!”I said.“Our foam brushes are now foam shreds (碎片)!”“Bad Ginger!”Jasmine shouted.“It's OK,”said
Mareya.“She's way too little to know any better.”

写作
第一节
One possible version:
Dear John,
I am letting you know that I have long been bothered by the noise I believe coming from your property.
The noise I am complaining about comes from your all-night parties every weekend and your loud shouting at the basketball game at midnight, which made it difficult for me to sleep at night and concentrate on my study the next day.
I feel I have to write to you so that hopefully we can tackle this matter and it does not have to go any further.
Please do what you can to help. I would appreciate your co-operation.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
On the walk to Mareya's house, I said, “I hope Ms. Williams will understand why we couldn't do our portrait task.” “What do you mean ” said Mareya. “We're allowed to paint in any style. Let's just use different paintbrushes.” She bent down, picked up two skinny sticks, and said, “How about these ” “Why not ” I laughed. And I told her that I was pretty sure tempera paints were safe for finger painting. We carefully painted each other's portraits with our colorful fingers. Besides, we both added Ginger to our paintings.
We ended up having a great time making our portraits with our fingers. And even though our masterpieces turned out way different than they would have with the foam brushes, they ended up being our favorite pieces of the whole art term. “We're sorry,” we told Ms. Williams, “but a dog really did eat part of our homework.” Ms. Williams smiled. “Art is a lot like life. It almost never turns out the way we plan. And sometimes going in an entirely different direction is the very thing that makes it wonderful.”
