Jumping Over Boundaries
When I was in elementary school, we had an annual sports day. Girls could do many things like hopscotch, jump rope, tetherball, and dodgeball, except high jumping. Only boys could do high jumping.
That’s what I wanted to do — high jumping. So I went to the coach.
“Girls don’t do high jumping,” the coach said. “Girls have all these other things they can do.” He excitedly described how much fun it would be.
I’d been high jumping in the backyard with my five brothers for years. Although I am a girl, I did high jumping pretty well. My brothers could rarely beat me. Whenever my back crossed the bar, that feeling is extremely wonderful. I went home and told my mother what the coach had said. My mother, a small, thin woman only four feet eleven inches tall, said, “I think we should go visit him.”
“Visit who ” I asked confusedly.
“The headmaster.”
“Visit the headmaster ” I was terrified. Would I get in trouble Would my mother and I be crossing boundaries we shouldn’t cross
My mom and I went to Mr. White’s office. “Linda wants to do the high jump,” my mother said.
“Mrs. Martinez, you don’t understand. This is the tradition of our Annual Sports Day,” he said.
“But Mr. White, I don’t know where it says that girls cannot do this.”
The headmaster couldn’t find any rules that said girls couldn’t do the high jump. “I have to think about this,” he said at last.
When we got home, my mom told me something I would always remember: this wasn’t just about me. “Maybe other girls want to do this, too,” she said.
My mother waited a week, but still didn’t get the headmaster’s reply. So she walked over to the school again. “Mr. White, please. I ask you this not for me and not for Linda, but let’s just see how it works.” In the end, Mr. White agreed.
I stood on the field of the high jumping competition.

The day I met Hani Irmawati, she was a shy, seventeen-year-old girl standing alone in the parking lot of the international school in Indonesia, where I teach English. The school is expensive and does not accept Indonesian students. She walked up to me and asked if I could help her improve her English. I could tell it took great courage for the young Indonesian girl in worn clothing to ask for my help.
“Why do you want to improve your English ” I asked her, fully expecting her to talk about finding a job in a local hotel.
“I want to go to an American university,” she said with quiet confidence. Her idealistic dream made me want to cry.
I agreed to work with her after school each day on a volunteer basis. For the next several months, Hani woke each morning at five and caught the city bus to her public high school. Then at four o’clock in the afternoon, she arrived at my classroom, worn out but ready to work. With each passing day, I grew more fond of her. She worked harder than most of my wealthy students.
Her parents’ combined yearly income was 750 U. S. dollars. It wasn’t enough to meet the expenses of even one month in an American university. Hani’s enthusiasm was increasing with her language ability, but I was becoming more and more discouraged.
One morning in December 1998, I received the announcement of a scholarship opportunity for a major American university. I excitedly tore open the envelope and studied the requirements, but it wasn’t long before I dropped the form in depression. There was just no way, I thought, for Hani to meet these qualifications.
She did, however, have more determination than any student I’d ever seen. When Hani came into the classroom that day, I told her of the scholarship. I also told her that I believed there was no way for her to apply. I encouraged her to be realistic about her future and not to plan so strongly on coming to America. Even after my lecture, Hani remained firm.

My sixth-grade students were seated in a large circle on the floor of our classroom. Each student held a different tool in his or her hand, such as a hammer, a flashlight, and even an awl. The lesson had gone perfectly. The students discussed how words are like tools-they have the ability to build or to destroy, and they discovered how the right tool used at the right time for the right job can cause great results. The sixth graders freely shared personal stories of how they had experienced someone's words used as a tool, to wound or to heal. I watched and listened with a sense of satisfaction-they got it!
A few days later, one of my students, Laura, had an unexpected and uncharacteristic outburst of destructive behaviors in class. She refused to work with her group. I was aware from reading Laura's file that she had struggled with disobedient ( 叛 逆 的 )behavior in previous years, but we had developed a good relationship and she was always a respectful, thoughtful, and positive contributor to our class. Her behavior caught me off guard. I asked her to excuse herself and told her I would visit with her in our next door team center in just a minute. She refused to leave and sat silently glaring at me from the back of the room. I rather firmly told her she needed to excuse herself—this was NOT optional. She knew I meant it. She marched from the back of the room to our classroom door, shooting me an angry look, and slammed the door as she left for the team meeting room.
I continued our lesson and when the students were working together in their groups, I gently closed our classroom door behind me, then marched the five steps next door to cur meeting room where Laura was seated. In an unexpected and uncharacteristic gesture of frustration, I slammed the meeting room door behind me. As I stood over her, I began to express how disrespectful and uncalled-for her behavior had been to our class. Her behavior angered me and I was sharp in my tone and my words. Without looking at me, she absorbed my anger.

Katie had always longed for a pet dog, but growing up in a family of diplomats, her parents had to move around the world frequently, so having a pet didn't fit their lifestyle. Even during her university years, the university's rules didn't allow it. It was only after she graduated and started living independently that the opportunity arose.
One day, Katie talked to her housemate and best friend from university, Rachel, about her desire for a pet dog. Rachel suggested, "why don't you consider fostering (收养)a dog There are so many stray (流浪的) dogs in need of temporary homes before they find their forever families. "
The idea fascinated Katie as it allowed her to experience the joys of pet ownership without the lifelong commitment. However, she had some concerns, "What if I become too attached "
Rachel reassured her, "Well, if you form a strong bond, you can always choose to adopt it yourself. "
Without telling Katie beforehand, Rachel took the initiative and visited a local animal rescue organization to register for a foster dog. One sunny afternoon, when Katie came home from work, she was greeted by a small black-and-white dog. Her eyes lit up with joy and surprise. "Is this for real "
"Here is Freda, " Rachel said, beaming with pride. "She's going to be our foster dog while she waits for her forever home. "
As the days passed, Katie experienced the joys and challenges of being a pet parent. Waking up to Freda's sweet morning kisses became the best way to start her day. The daily walks with Freda turned into cherished moments of bonding, as they explored the nearby parks and strolled along the serene (静的)lakeside together.
However, amid the excitement and cuddles (拥抱), Katie also learned the responsibilities that came with pet ownership. Juggling (尽力同时应付) her demanding work schedule with Freda's needs required careful planning and dedication. Katie came to understand why her parents never got one when she was a child. She also felt bad always asking her friends to dog-sit when she was too busy to care for Freda.

Donna is my sister, and I had always considered her beautiful. Our father called her his princess, and in high school, she was known as the school babe. Our parents were protective of us, particularly our father, who kept close watch over the friends she made.
One Saturday in April, a boy invited Donna to a park with four other friends. Unfortunately, on their way to the park, their car crashed into a guardrail and flipped over three times before it came to a stop on its roof. Donna was pulled from the car and rushed to the hospital without delay.
Donna was in the hospital for two weeks. Many of her friends went to see her, especially Claudia, who was there a lot. However, Mom and Dad never liked Claudia. I don’t really know why. They just didn’t like her being around.
Donna returned home with the entire top half of her head shaved. She had hundreds of stitches (缝线), some of which came across her forehead and between her left eye and eyebrow. Knowing Donna’s concern for her appearance, Mom found her a human hair wig (假发) that perfectly matched her hair.
Donna finally recovered and went back to school. But she never felt good in school. There was a very loud-mouthed, self-centered girl in Donna’s class who took great pleasure in teasing her. This girl, seated behind Donna, would pull slightly on Donna’s wig and mockingly said, “Hey, Wiggy, let’s see your scars (伤疤)”. Then she would laugh.
Donna endured this mistreatment in silence until the day she told Claudia. From then on, Claudia kept a close eye on my sister, preventing anyone from bothering her. There was something about Claudia that was frightening, even to the worst kids in school. Nobody messed with her. Unfortunately, though, Claudia wasn’t always around, and the teasing and name-calling continued.
One day, Claudia came to our home with a special surprise.

I stood on the field of the high jumping competition. I was the only girl who joined in high jumping, which made me feel a little embarrassed. But when I saw the bar I had been longing for, all the awkwardness disappeared. I was arranged the last to jump. I saw some boys failed, while some jumped over at a good height, but not higher than my ever record. Finally, it was my turn. I took a deep breath, ran up, took off, and crossed over! As it turned out, I won the high-jumping contest.
To my surprise, some of the cheers I got were from boys! The boys who had laughed at me for participating in high jumping were now cheering for me. The girls ran over and hugged me. I instantly became the center of attention on the entire field of competition. The headmaster person- ally presented me with an award. More importantly, every year in the future, the school would allow girls to participate in high jumping competitions. My mother was right--it wasn’t about me. It was about making people think about what girls could do. I jumped not only over the bar, but also over the boundary of prejudice.

“Will you send in my name ”she asked. I didn’t have the heart to turn her down. I completed the application, filling in each blank with the painful truth about her academic life, but also with my praise of her courage and her perseverance. I sealed up the envelope and told Hani her chances for acceptance ranged somewhere between slim and none. Two weeks later, she received a letter from the scholarship association. Trying to prepare her for disappointment, I opened the letter and began to read it to her. She had been accepted.
I leaped about the room excitedly, shocked. Hani stood by, smiling quietly, but almost certainly bewildered by my surprise. The image of her face in that moment came back to me time and time again in the following week. I finally realized that it was I who had learned something Hani had known from the beginning: It is not intelligence alone that brings success, but also the drive to succeed, the commitment to work hard and the courage to believe in yourself. When I paused for her response, she slowly turned and proudly stated, "You're using your tool 'against me!"Her words hit me that I had used my authority and anger as a tool to hurt her, just as we had discussed during our lesson. Feeling a mix of guilt and admiration for her insight, I took a deep breath and softened my tone. I apologized to Laura sincerely, acknowledging that I should have approached the situation differently, with understanding and empathy. She looked me in the eye and softly said, “Yes, I forgive you, Mrs. Ekre. I'm sorry, too. ”
For the rest of the day and the rest of the year; Laura never had another outburst. Our relationship deepened day by day. At the end of the year, she wrote me a beautiful letter about how she loved being in my class and that some of the most important lessons she learned. Attached to the note was a small key—a tool, she said, for a language arts teacher who taught her how important words can be. It serves as my reminder of a lesson I taught as a teacher but one I really learned from my student.

Eventually, the right family was found for Freda, but saying goodbye was bittersweet. As Katie prepared to say goodbye, it became an emotional moment for her. Despite the short time Freda had stayed with them, she had left a deep impression, brightening their home and bringing joy and laughter. This experience strengthened Katie's determination to care for more dogs in the future, and she even considered the possibility of adopting a dog herself, Katie took Freda to the adoption agency, feeling a mix of sadness and contentment. She was relieved to know that Freda was going to a stable and caring home.
Several months later, Katie discovered a small package on her front door. At first, she was puzzled, not recalling any orders she had placed. Opening the box, Katie was almost brought to tears as she found numerous photos of Freda enjoying her new life. She excitedly showed Rachel, and both of them shared the happy feeling. They felt proud of the role they played in fostering Freda and hoped she would continue to live a joyful life.

47.One day Claudia came to our home with a special surprise. Knowing how awful Donna felt about her hair, she had shaved off her own beautiful long brown hair. In a vocabulary not allowed inside school walls, she set them straight so that anyone ready to tease my sister knew they would have to mess with Claudia. It didn’t take long for the message to get through.
Donna and Claudia wore their wigs for over a year. They waited until they felt comfortable revealing their natural hair.
