应用文
To raise our safety awareness, some firefighters were invited to our school to give us a speech last Saturday afternoon.
They showed us how to prevent a fire, what to do in case of a fire and how to use different kinds of fire-fighting equipment. Then a fire drill was held. As soon as the alarm rang, all of us ran downstairs one by one. We finally got together on the playground safely.
Through the drill, we have learnt how to escape in an emergency. I think it important to remain calm and know what to do.
读后续写
A few minutes later, the shop owner came out. There, before Bobby's eyes, lay twelve red roses, with green leaves and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver tape.“That will be a dime, young man," the shop owner said, reaching out his hand for the dime. “Could this be true No one else would give me a thing for the dime!" Bobby thought. Sensing the boy's hesitation, the shop owner added, “I just happened to have some roses on sale. Would you like them ” This time Bobby did not hesitate and took the flowers with gratitude.
With the bunch of flowers in his hands, Bobby walked out of the door and then broke into a run. Within minutes, he was at home, still breathless. “Look, Mom, what have I bought for you ” Bobby called out in the backyard. His mother could hardly believe her eyes upon seeing the beautiful flowers in front of her.“Merry Christmas!”Bobby said and began to tell her everything he had experienced in the flower shop. Mother took her son in her arms, tears of happiness streaming down her cheeks. Standing in the bitter cold air, they somehow didn't feel cold at all.

Text 1
W: Why are you so happy
M:I got an A on my test! I studied so hard and it paid off. I feel great!
W:Congratulations! I'm very proud of you. Let me take you out for ice cream to celebrate.
Text 2
W:Did you go anywhere during the winter holiday
M:Yes. I went back to my hometown with my father. I was brought up there and didn't leave until I was six. But it has changed a lot. There were many new houses everywhere, and I could hardly tell where anything was after twenty years.
Text 3
M:This concert is fantastic. I'm so glad that you bought us tickets. What a nice surprise!
W:I know they're your favorite band,so I couldn't pass up the opportunity to buy tickets when I saw they were coming to town.
Text 4
W:On the way home from my business trip, I'll be in Paris for twenty-four hours. Do you have any suggestions about what I should do
M:Oh, that's so little time! Well, since it's all you have, you should rent a bike. Then you can explore many different neighborhoods in one day.
Text 5
W: Turn left at the next street, and don't forget to make a complete stop at the stop sign.
M:What happens if I don't make a complete stop
W:You'll fail your driving test. Don't worry. We have enough time to practice before the big day.
Text 6
M:Why do you have an umbrella with you It's not supposed to rain today, is it
W: No, but it's supposed to be very hot. I'll use this umbrella to protect myself from the sun, as soon as these clouds go away.
M:I've never heard of using an umbrella for protection from the sun.
W:Did you know that the Chinese invented the umbrella, and that its first use was for protection against the sun, not the rain
M:I had no idea! You must get sunburned easily, huh
W:Oh, absolutely! I always get super red if I haven't put on sun cream.
M:I understand. So, taking an umbrella will be good for you.
Text 7
M:Do you know how old this tree is It's over 2,000 years
old. Most redwood trees live to be around 500 to 700 years old, but this one has been around a very long time.
W:That's incredible.
M:Imagine how much this tree has seen in its lifetime! From all of the different kinds of animals that have made it their home, to everything that's changed down here on the forest floor.
W:How tall do you think it is
M:I'd guess it's anywhere from 200 to 300 feet.
W:Why do redwoods grow so tall, and for so long
M:Well, they're in a part of the country that gets a lot of rain, and the climate is not too hot or too cold. They also have a natural material in their wood, which makes it easier for them to keep out insects.
Text 8
M: That's all the time we have for today's class. Don't forget to put away your science books. Does anyone have any more questions Yes, Sara
W:I know we talked a lot about mosquitoes today and the different types of diseases they can carry. My question is: What makes their bites itch so much
M:That's a very good question. When a mosquito bites, it also shoots some of its own spit into you, which contains a chemical that keeps your blood from thickening. That way, it can get its mouth out from your skin before it gets stuck. Your body then sends out a different chemical to stop the mosquito's chemical, and that's what itches.
W:So,the itching comes from us and not the mosquito
M:Yep. Another interesting fact is that only female
mosquitoes bite because they need the nutrition from your blood to produce eggs.
W:That's awful.
M:Science isn't always pretty.
Text 9
M:It's such a joy to get to interview you today. How long did it take you to write your new book Michael's Sunshine
W:Thank you for having me. It took me five years to write Michael's Sunshine. Midnight, the first book I wrote, only took me a year. I don't know how I wrote it so fast! With Michael's Sunshine, I wanted to take my time.
M:Your writing mainly deals with the topic of forgiveness, and many reviews of your books have touched on that as well. Is that something that you were aware of
W:Yes, definitely. I have always been interested in how and why people forgive each other, and I wanted to write about that.
M:Do you have anything new you're working on
W: I do! I'm actually almost done with my third book. It's
called The Snow Tree. I don't want to give too much away about the story, though.
M:OK, I won't ask you any questions about it. Did you always know you wanted to be a writer
W: No. I thought I wanted to make movies, but then I
decided I liked writing better, so here I am.

Few businesses can run without computers, giving keyboard shortcuts an incredible importance. Schools view typing courses as necessary. But what are we giving up as handwriting loses its significance
Brain power, according to science. Researchers from Princeton University and the University of California conducted a series of studies to demonstrate the differences between students who wrote out their notes and those who typed them. Study participants took notes on a lecture using one of the two methods and were tested 30 minutes after the lecture, and again a week later.
The results showed both types of note-takers did well on the first test. The longhand note-takers had a stronger grasp of the overall concept. Students with the handwritten notes were also able to better remember and understand the concept of the lecture a week later, and were more open to understanding new ideas.
According to Pam Mueller, lead author of the study, “Our findings suggest even when laptops are used as intended, they may still be harming academic performance.”Part of the reason is that it was faster to take notes on the laptop. Using exactly the same words meant they weren't truly engaged in the content. But note-takers using pen and paper tended to digest the material better and could rephrase it in their own words.
Although typing notes using exactly the same words can help in recalling facts in the short term, it takes the focus away from the main points of the lesson.“Ironically, the feature that makes their laptop note-taking so attractive-the ability to take notes more quickly was what weakened learning,” educational psychologist Dr Kenneth Kiewra told The Wall Street Journal.
Computers aren't going away soon, but that doesn't mean paper notebooks become outdated. In fact. it is best to start using them at an early age. University of Indiana researchers compared brain scans of five-year-olds-some who practised the printing letters, and some who just looked at the letters. Those who wrote out the letters had more enhanced and adult-like brain activity.
24.In the study, what were the participants asked to do
A. Compare typing and handwriting.
B. Take notes by typing or handwriting and take tests.
C. Take two tests right after taking notes on the lecture.
D. Take notes using exactly the same words on the lecture.
25. What does the underlined word “longhand” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Fast. B. Flexible.
C. Typing. D. Handwriting.
26.What contributes to better learning in note-taking
A. Using the exact words.
B. Introducing modern tools.
C. Writing as quickly as possible.
D. Rephrasing the learning material.
27. What would be the best title for the text
A. Typing Matters in a Way
B. A Pen Is Better than a Keyboard
C. Handwriting Builds Your Brain Power
D. Handwriting or Typing Is a Question

As a child, I never considered myself an athlete at all as I was very uncoordinated(不协调的).However, I did love to run because I felt as if I was flying but this all changed two years ago when I suffered a knee injury. I was bedridden for two weeks and I had a difficult time moving even short distances. I literally cried myself on my way to the car for a few days.
When therapy(疗法) wasn't working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class for girls, Bikram Yoga to be exact. Starting a yoga practice was truly a godsend because it helped me gain strength in my knees but, most importantly, yoga helped me attain a more peaceful state of mind, body and spirit.
Since each class was heated to 105°F, every time I stepped foot in the yoga studio, I'd feel a surge(涌起)of negative thoughts come upon me like a big ocean wave. Some of these thoughts were, in the beginning of my practice, so strong that I walked out of the class several times. However, as the months passed by, I noticed that when I didn't get swayed away by my negative thoughts, I could stay in the hot room for longer.
After 3-4 months of practising hot yoga, my arms and legs were beginning to get definition. I also woke up with so much more energy than I had before starting my yoga practice and I gradually started shedding the pounds from my body. Yoga literally made me feel as if I'd taken a shot of energy drink and just gave me that burst that helped my knees heal and made my overall health better.
As I saw some of my classmates do poses that looked appealing to me, I started to think maybe I could do them too. Therefore, yoga helped show me that I have no real limitations physically unless I set those limitations myself through eating junk and thinking in negative limiting terms.
Also, practising yoga in front of a mirror helped me connect with myself and practising with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity whereas before I didn't. Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I'm part of a bigger picture in life!

If you look around your city, you might spot girls wearing hanfu in subways or people wearing T-shirts with Chinese characters on the streets. A new trend has taken hold in China--guochao, or“China-chic”.
According to a report, searches related to guochao on Dianping, a life style information platform, have risen by 170 percent from the same period in 2021, and reviews have risen by nearly 40 percent. China-chic has happened, but what is it
The term characterises the rise of China's native fashion trends. It has expanded the concept of “Made in China”, which has been recognised as the representation of Chinese culture and aesthetics offered by homegrown Chinese brands, according to CGTN.
China-chic came into the spotlight in 2018. Before that, big name foreign companies dominated the world market. To win market share, many Chinese brands followed in the footsteps of these Western brands. But that year, Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning changed things up. During the 2018 New York Fashion Week, Li-Ning introduced its Taoism-inspired Wu Dao collection. The collection not only had a trendy look, but also included elements of traditional Chinese culture. It immediately grabbed attention at home and abroad.
The trend to embrace domestic brands has since spread rapidly to various sectors and products, from food and drinks to clothing, mobile phones and electric vehicles. For example, White Rabbit, whose sweet candy brings back childhood memories for many, launched its perfume and lip balm. “We want White Rabbit to be a brand that young people want to share," Shen Qinfeng, the company's marketing manager, told People's Daily.
Now, the guochao trend is “ moving to the next stage, where its success will rely, first and foremost, on gaining cultural confidence rather than Western validation", according to Kerra Zhou, founder of brand strategy consultancy Kerrisma.
No matter how the guochao trend evolves, there's one thing that won't change: Behind the craze is people's positive attitude towards the country's development and their recognition of and growing confidence in national culture, said Yao Linqing, a professor in the School of Economics and Management at Communication University of China.

C. Because White Rabbit was a good example for showing the guochao trend.
D. Because this traditional brand was on the decline.
34.What is the secret to the success of the guochao trend
A. Increasing confidence in Chinese culture. B. Excellent design skills.
C. Clothes of great quality. D. Styles catering to people abroad.
35. What is the author's attitude to the future of the guochao trend
A. Doubtful. B. Positive.
C. Disapproving. D. Cautious.

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Bobby didn't wear boots; or rather, he didn't own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.
Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, “This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea, I don't have any money for a gift. ”
Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were. It wasn't easy being six without a father, particularly when he needed a man to talk to.
Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer(微光)of the setting sun's rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime(一角硬币).
Never before had anyone felt as wealthy as Bobby did at that moment. As he held his newly found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother's Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his one dime offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying, "You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you.” As Bobby waited, he looked at the beautiful flowers and even though he was a boy, he could see why mothers and girls loved flowers.
