Four years ago, life rewarded me for all the challenges I embraced in search of self-improvement when i was selected to be in the Youth Exchange and Study (YES) programme. Before that moment, living on the other side of the Atlantic had always meant--for a young Moroccan woman who had never set foot abroad-an anxiety-free atmosphere, welcoming neighbors, and countless opportunities. Fortunately, my host community checked all these boxes.
My host mother went above and beyond to take care of my needs, my teachers were very accommodating with regards to my schoolwork, and I could use my status as an exchange student as an excuse when I needed a favor or an exception. With all this unique treatment, I thought to myself, Hold on a. second! Is this what you came for Even though my host community was so helpful and welcoming, I realized that I was growing too content with my life. I remembered that I came to the United States for a challenge and that I was determined to strengthen my capacities.
To develop greater perseverance, I chose to join my host school, s swim team, even though I had no prior experience in this sport. For over five months, I walked myself-sometimes reluctantly--to swim practices. During those practices, I did the best I could for three hours each day.
One of my best achievements that year was competing in one of the biggest swim meets of the year. From an outsider's perspective, it might not seem like much, especially since I didn't even win. However, I was never the athletic type, nor have I ever been particularly outstanding in terms of discipline and commitment. Yet that was exactly what I achieved. I gained discipline and I came to the realization that I do not need to be perfect at everything that I try for the first time.
Growth can take many forms. In my case, it took the form of a humid( CE ceiling and an overly tight polyester (聚酯纤维) cap. Growth can only be achieved by defying personal limits and breaking free from comfort zones. This is not always a fascinating process, but it always brings you closer to a new and improved version of yourself!
24. How did the author feel about her life in her host family
A. She felt stressed like living in a box.
B. She felt good about her high family status.
C. She felt free and could do nearly whatever she liked.
D. She felt delighted and expected to be taken better care of
25. What made the author join the school's swim team
A. Her experience in swimming B. Her interest in water sports
C. Her spirit of perseverance D. Her desire to challenge herself.
26. What. did the author think of her achievement in swimming
A. It made her outstanding B. It showed her personal breakthroughs
C. It was not a big deal D. It made her see her limits
27. What can we conclude from this passage
A. Change is a brilliant opportunity to grow
B. From failure to success is a long road
C. We learn things by doing them
D. Self-assurance is two-thirds of success

Many of you may have used Siri, a voice assistant of US tech company Apple. You only have to say “hey Siri” and it will answer to your command. However, we may be sacrificing our privacy to enjoy this convenience.
According to a recent report by the Guardian, Siri can be accidentally triggered and start recording private conversations, such as discussions between doctors and patients Some of these recordings are then given to workers outside the company to review. Apple claimed the data was used to help Siri improve, but users were not informed of this measure in the first place. Apple's Siri is not the only voice assistant to come under fire. In 2018, Alexa, a voice assistant developed by US tech company Amazon, recorded a private conversation between a couple and sent it to a stranger without their permission.
These issues deepened concerns that tech companies are infringing(侵犯) users' rights of privacy Many people have long feared that tech companies are listening and collecting data from private conversations, reported Forbes. Using this data, third party companies could then paint an accurate picture of users' habits and preferences in order to serve them more targeted advertisements, or even worse, sell this private data.
Despite this risk, the popularity of voice assistant seems to be unstoppable. In the near future, everything from your lighting to your air-conditioning to your refrigerator, your coffee maker, and even your toilet could be wired to a system controlled by voice, commented The Atlantic.
Colin Horgan wrote on the blog site Medium that he believed people's daily lives will soon become a source of data. " The sounds of our homes, the symphony of life laughing, crying, talking, shouting, sitting in silence-will no longer be considered memories, but data, " he wrote. To deal with the issue, Blake Morgan, reporter for The Atlantic, believed that the answer is transparency. " Al companies need to have messaging ready to explain to customers what they do with private data, she wrote on The Atlantic.
28. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2
A. There are some fire-proof voice assistants.
B. Many voice assistants are. being developed.

A. Serving them targeted advertisements.
B. Sending their message.
C. Invading their privacy.
D. Making no improvements.
30. What should companies do in response according to the last paragraph
A. Stop collecting data through voice assistant.
B. Explain their use of the data to customers.
C. Make their data more transparent.
D. Collect data to better keep memories.
31. What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A. To show visions of a data world in the future.
B. To criticize companies' invading customers' privacy.
C. To inform people of what tech companies are really up to.
D. To draw attention to the privacy issue concerning voice assistants.

Animals can adapt quickly to survive unfavorable environmental conditions Evidence is mounting to show that plants can, too. a paper published in the journal Trends in Plant Science details how plants are rapidly adapting to the effects of climate change, and how they are passing down these adaptations to their offspring(后代).
Plants are facing more environmental stresses than ever. For example, climate change is making winters shorter in many locations, and plants are responding. Many plants require a minimum period of cold in order to set up their environmental clock to define their flowering time, says Martinelli, a plant geneticist at the University of Florence. As cold seasons shorten, plants have adapted to require shorter periods of cold to delay flowering. These mechanisms allow plants to avoid flowering in periods when they have fewer opportunities to reproduce.”
Because plants don't have neural(神经的) networks, their memory is based entirely on cellular, molecular, and biochemical networks. These networks make up. what the researchers call somatic memory (体细胞记忆)。“It allows plants to recognize the occurrence of a previous environmental condition and to react accordingly says Martinelli.
These somatic memories can then be passed to the plants' offspring via epigenetics(表现遗传)。“Several examples demonstrate the existence of molecular mechanisms modulating plant memory to environmental stresses and affecting the adaptation of offspring to these stresses,” says Martinelli.
Going forward, Martinelli hopes to understand even more about the genes that are being passed down. “We are particularly interested in decoding the epigenetic alphabet without changes in DNA sequence,” he says. “This is especially important when we consider the rapid climate change we observe today that every living organism, including plants, needs to quickly adapt to survive.”
32. What adaptations have plants made to shortened cold seasons
A. They have shortened their flowering time
B. They have got more chances to reproduce.
C. They have avoided flowering in cold seasons
D. They have adjusted their environmental clock
33. What can we learn about somatic memory
A. It is entirely based on neural networks.
B. It can help the plants' offspring to survive.
C. It can help relieve environmental stresses.
D. It disturbs the plants biochemical networks.
34. What does the underlined word " modulating mean in paragraph 4
A. Adjusting. B. Treasuring C. Recording D. Sharing
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Plants are smart about flowering time
B. Plants can also adapt to climate change
C. Environmental stresses challenge plants
D. Mysteries of plant genes are to be unfolded

阅读下列短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
“If you buy things you do not need, soon you will have to sell things you need.” This is a piece of wise advice from Warren Buffet, arguably one of the greatest financial minds of the 21st century. 36 This is true especially in the present economic climate.
While the idea of being frugal (节俭的) has long been a part of Eastern culture, the relatively recent growth of wealth in China as well as the ease of purchasing has led to increased consumerism for many across the country. Yet this increased consumption of goods has been pushing the prices of certain bare essentials such as housing, transportation and food, which is forcing people to reevaluate their priorities while spending money. 37 .
The internet is flooded with advice on where one can save money as well as good opinions about how they should spend their money. For example, clothes can be bought second-hand, but you should never skip a visit to the dentist. 38 In the meanwhile, you should limit those that are fancy but not entirely necessary. Of course, it is still fine to occasionally spend money on a nice vacation, but buying thirty pairs of shoes you will only wear a few times is neither responsible nor sustainable.
Hopefully we all fully understand at this point that the resources on the earth are indeed limited. 39 As a result, the choice (forced or not) to be frugal is not only good for one's wallet, but also beneficial to the planet in the long run. Have you ever chosen to starve yourself to get a pair of limited-edition sneakers 40
A. A continuous growth model on this planet is by no means sustainable
B. These words have always not been taken seriously by young people.
C. They are meant to encourage people to buy more stuff than they need.
D. It makes sense to prioritize goods and services that directly affect your health.
E. Many young people today appear to be taking these words very much to heart.
F. It is no wonder then that being frugal is once again becoming a dominant trend.
G. If so, it is high time you started making changes for yourself and for all humanity.

I was here for meetings in Westwood near the Medical Centre in LA. Should I wander a little Try to find one of the treasured maps
From the front of the hotel taxi line, a cheerful driver said, No problem. Map vendors(小贩) are everywhere! Before long, we saw a hand-painted sandwich board saying: Star Maps. The taxi stopped. A fellow approached with a thin folded sheet ang said: “Ten dollars.”
Ten dollars. American! with righteous assurance, I informed him, “That’s too much.” The map man shrugged. We continued, racing past the Beverly hills Hotel into West Hollywood. The driver dropped me at the House of Blues, encouraging me to stroll. i began walking, certain I would find a low-cost star map soon.
I was wrong. There was hardly anybody on the street. There didn't seem to be many real stores, just cars and bars. No maps. No stars. Blocks passed. The sun began to sink. At the edge of West Hollywood, another fellow appeared ahead, selling star maps to a car full of teenage girls.
Ten dollars still. Still too much. Forgot it. My son would understand. Time to go back to Westwood. That night, my wife called me. Did you get one of those maps. to the stars He's been talking about nothing else. This news was hard to ignore, but it was late.
Morning was coming. There would be last try. After I checked out, the first taxi in the hotel line was an old Chevy driven by a skinny guy from North Carolina. At nine in the morning, map vendors were nowhere to be found.
“You know,” said the driver, “The guys with the maps just ain’t up yet!” He was right. “Forget it. Let's go to the airport.”
“Well.” said the driver, “I could mail you one if you like.”

M: Are you coming to the gym
W: No, I don’t feel like going today. I’ve been busy working the whole day and really need a peaceful time at home.
(Text 2)
M: You should try this. My aunt made it.
W: Mm, delicious. What is it
M: It’s called couscous. It’s made from wheat. There’s some meat on top
of it.
(Text 3)
M: I’m cooking beef with potatoes. Do you want some
W: No, thanks. I’m on a diet. I only eat vegetables and fruits.
M: OK, there are some grapes in the fridge. Help yourself.
W: Thanks.
(Text 4)
M: Lisa, do you think we should get a new sofa
W: Oh, our sofa is a bit old but perfectly usable. Right now, we need a cupboard in the kitchen much more.
(Text 5)
W: Hey, Thomas. How was the movie last night
M: It was OK, not exactly a top quality one but still a welcome surprise. I would give it three stars out of four.
(Text 6)
M: We’d like a table for four, please.
W: Have you made a booking
M: No, we haven’t.
W: I’m afraid there will be about a ten-to-fifteen-minute wait.
M: That’s OK. Oh, by the way, we’d prefer a table by the window.
W: In that case, you will probably have to wait longer.
M: It doesn’t matter.
W: OK, I’ll call you when the table is ready. Your name, please
M: It’s Montague. M-O-N-T-A-G-U-E. Could we look at the menu while
we are waiting
W: Certainly. Here you are.
(Text 7)
W: Good evening. What can I do for you

W: OK, we have a room with two queen-size beds and a kitchen.

M: That’s OK. I’ll take this one.
W: OK. All done. I hope you’ll enjoy your stay.

W: Yes, good morning.
M: Oh, I’m John Reeves. I manage the Sales Department here at Rasco International. You can call me John.
W: OK, John.
M: Have you already been shown round the company
W: Yes. I got here at 9 a.m. And Tara gave me a tour of the place.
M: And what did you think
W: It’s a lot bigger than I thought it would be.
M: Yes. A lot of people say that. Now we have over fifty people working here. Well, where did you hear about Rasco International
W: From my brother, Michael Brown. He worked for you a couple of years ago and he has always spoken well of you.
M: Yes, I remember him. You’ll say hi to him from me, won’t you
W: OK, sure.
(Text 9)
W: Sam, I listened to a lecture last night at the art gallery and the artist told us that we don’t need to be professional to give our home a new look.
M: So, did the artist say how to do it exactly I’m about to decorate my house.
W: Yes, I have noted down a few of the creative ways he talked about.
M: I’d love to hear about them. For example, should I redesign the entrance to my home
W: Yeah, it’s important. And it’s the first thing people will see when they visit. It should reflect the design of the rest of your house. Depending on your budget, you might want to give your front door a fresh coat of paint.
M: Mm, I’ll consider that. Another thing is I have a big table in my dining room that no one ever sits at.
W: Yeah. Some people never use their dining tables. So why hold onto them Replace the big table with a smaller round table.
M: That’s a good idea. The whole family will still be able to sit there and it won’t feel quite as polished.
W: Yes, and all these creative ways can be finished on your own to suit your design style and personal taste.
(Text 10)
W: Many students ask me about how to understand, and enjoy the experience of concert going. So today, I’d like to take some time to talk about it. First of all, a live concert is totally different from listening to recordings. In a live performance, what is performed, how it sounds and how the artist feels about the performance, these exist for only a very short moment and can never be repeated. As an audience responds to the excitement of such moments, feelings are exchanged between stage and hall. You have many kinds of concerts to choose from by many kinds of performing groups. Concerts by university performing groups are easily accessible, free or at a relatively low price and often of high quality. Announcements of such concerts will be found in the newspaper of our university. Performances outside the university are announced in local newspapers. These concerts tend to be more expensive but discount tickets are often available for students. Though tickets can usually be bought on the day or night of a concert, you have a wide choice if you buy them in advance at the box office or on the Internet. If possible, prepare for a concert by listening to some of the works to be performed and by reading about the musicians.
