In the day, the view of Wuzhen is dominated by white walls and brown wooden doors, but this scene changes in the night when the different lights in the water town create various stunning colors against the black sky.
Of all the shops in Wuzhen, the workshop selling traditional handmade lanterns stands out the most during the night. The man behind these amazing creations is Gu Yeguang, a 53-year-old craftsman who was born into a family of lantern makers in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province.
Although Gu has spent nearly his entire life making lanterns, he has never grown weary of the profession, saying that getting to teach the craft to young people is what motivates him these days.
To craft the frame of the lantern, Gu has to chop bamboo carefully into long and thin sticks before using a candle to scorch (烧焦) the areas that need to be handled. After bending the sticks, Gu binds the ends together and wraps the completed frame with paper. All these have to be done with great skills and rich experience.
The lantern workshop is without doubt one of the most popular attractions in Wuzhen. According to Gu, the workshop would receive more than 100 people during its opening hours from 9 am to 5 pm during the peak summer season. To craft a simple round lantern costs 30 yuan ($4.54). The more unique ones cost 50 yuan each.
After a large group of people departs the workshop following their short class on lantern making, Gu returns to his seat and continues work on a complex dragon-shaped creation. But before he could even pick up his tools, a small girl and her mother enter the space.
“Mummy, mummy, I want a lantern!” the girl exclaims excitedly. Gu raises his head and gets back on his feet. “Sure, let’s get started then,” he says. “Let us begin with this bamboo stick.” And with those few words he lights up the workshop, not with his lanterns but the child’s cherubic (天使般的) smile.
1. Why is Gu still committed to making lanterns
A. He masters better skills than others.
B. He regards making lanterns as a family business.
C. He has to earn enough money to support his family.
D. He wants to pass down the craft to the young generation.
2. Which can be used to describe the process of making lanterns in paragraph 4
A. Distinctive. B. Romantic. C. Significant. D. Demanding.
3. What does the writer most probably want to imply in the last paragraph
A. The educational methods of Gu Yeguang.
B. The busy but peaceful life of Gu Yeguang.
C. The promising future of handmade lanterns.
D. The commercial value of handmade lanterns.
【答案】1. D 2. D 3. C
根据第三段“Although Gu has spent nearly his entire life making lanterns, he has never grown weary of the profession, saying that getting to teach the craft to young people is what motivates him these days.(尽管顾几乎一生都在制作灯笼,但他从未厌倦这项职业,他说,向年轻人传授这门手艺是他现在的动力。)”可知,顾还在坚持做灯笼是因为他想把手艺传给年轻一代。故选D项。
【2题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“To craft the frame of the lantern, Gu has to chop bamboo carefully into long and thin sticks before using a candle to scorch (烧焦) the areas that need to be handled. After bending the sticks, Gu binds the ends together and wraps the completed frame with paper. All these have to be done with great skills and rich experience.(为了制作灯笼的框架,顾必须小心地把竹子切成又长又细的小棍,然后用蜡烛把需要加工的地方烤焦。弯曲木棍后,顾把两端绑在一起,用纸包裹好完成的框架。所有这些都需要有高超的技巧和丰富的经验。)”可知,制作灯笼需要高超的技巧,要求很高。故选D项。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“And with those few words he lights up the workshop, not with his lanterns but the child’s cherubic (天使般的) smile.(说完这几句话,他点亮了工作坊,不是他的灯笼,而是孩子的天使般的微笑。)”中“he lights up the workshop”和“the child’s cherubic (天使般的) smile”可推知,“光明”和“天使般的微笑”寓意手工灯笼的美好前景。故选C项。

Starman, the dummy (仿真人) riding a cherry-red Tesla Roadster (特斯拉敞篷车) through space, has made his closest approach ever to Mars. The electric roadster and its passenger were attached to the top of a Falcon Heavy rocket during the SpaceX rocket’s first test launch on 6 February 2018.
Two years later, the Falcon Heavy rocket and the vehicle at its tip are making their second trip around the Sun. Mr. McDowell, a Harvard astrophysicist, found that Starman passed 7.4 million kilometers from Mars at 06:25 GMT 7 October, 2020.
The closest recent approach between the Earth and Mars was 56 million kilometers in 2003, though the planets are often hundreds of millions of miles apart depending on where they are in their orbits. No one can see the Falcon Heavy rocket at its current distance, but orbits over periods of a few years are fairly straightforward to predict, and Mr. McDowell used data about how the rocket was moving when it left the Earth’s gravity behind to locate its recent movements exactly.
Last time Starman circled the Sun, McDowell said, it crossed Mars’ orbit while the Red Planet was quite far away. But this time the crossing lined up with a fairly close approach, though still not close enough to feel a strong tug from Mars.
At this point in time, if you were able to go look at the Roadster, it would probably look pretty different. The strong solar radiation environment between the planets would probably have destroyed all the exposed organic materials.
Without the Earth’s atmospheric and magnetic (磁场的) protection, even the plastics and carbon-fibre materials would start to break up. Over the course of decades or centuries, the car will end up with its aluminium (铝) frame and hard glass parts—that’s assuming that none of them get destroyed in impacts with passing space rocks.
4. What can we know from the first two paragraphs
A. Starman is now circling around the Earth in its orbit.
B. Starman has set out on its second trip around the Sun.
C. Starman has traveled 7.4 million kilometers after launch.
D. Starman still has a long way to go before getting to Mars.
5. How did McDowell manage to locate Starman
A. By seeking professional help from SpaceX. B. By predicting its future orbit around the Earth.
C. By keeping Starman under visual observation. D. By analyzing data related to the rocket’s movements.
6. What does the underlined word “tug” most probably mean in paragraph 4
A. Pull. B. Drive. C. Resistance. D. Pressure.
7. What could be the best title for the passage
A Starman’s circling around the Earth B. The dialogue between the Earth and Mars
C. Starman’s further approach to the Mars D. SpaceX’s vision in its next space mission
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是新闻报道。文章主要介绍了Starman和其座驾特斯拉敞篷车进一步接近火星火星。
【4题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Starman, the dummy (仿真人) riding a cherry-red Tesla Roadster (特斯拉敞篷车) through space, has made his closest approach ever to Mars.(斯塔曼,一个开着樱桃红色特斯拉敞篷车穿越太空的假人,已经最接近火星了)”可知,这是Starman最靠近的一次;以及第二段中“Two years later, the Falcon Heavy rocket and the vehicle at its tip are making their second trip around the Sun.(两年后,猎鹰重型火箭及其尖端的运载工具正在进行第二次绕太阳飞行)”可推断出,Starman已经开始了它的第二次绕太阳飞行。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“No one can see the Falcon Heavy rocket at its current distance, but orbits over periods of a few years are fairly straightforward to predict, and Mr. McDowell used data about how the rocket was moving when it left the Earth’s gravity behind to locate its recent movements exactly.(没有人能看到猎鹰重型火箭在目前的距离上运行,但几年的轨道是相当容易预测的,麦克道尔利用了火箭在脱离地球引力时的运动数据,精确地定位了它最近的运动)”可知,McDowell是通过分析火箭运行的数据成功定位Starman。故选D。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“But this time the crossing lined up with a fairly close approach, though still not close enough to feel a strong”可知,这一次,交叉点相当近,然而仍旧不够近,因此推断感觉不到来自火星的引力,故画线词与A项“拉;拖”意思相近。故选A。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Starman, the dummy (仿真人) riding a cherry-red Tesla Roadster (特斯拉敞篷车) through space, has made his closest approach ever to Mars. The electric roadster and its passenger were attached to the top of a Falcon Heavy rocket during the SpaceX rocket’s first test launch on 6 February 2018.(斯塔曼,一个开着樱桃红色特斯拉敞篷车穿越太空的假人,已经最接近火星了。2018年2月6日,在SpaceX火箭的首次测试发射中,电动跑车和乘客被固定在猎鹰重型火箭的顶部)”可推知,本文是新闻类题材,倒金字塔结构。第一段明确提出这是Starman靠近火星最近的一次,为本文最核心信息。C选项“斯塔曼进一步接近火星”最符合文章标题。故选C。
C
As you read this, pause to reflect on your recent interactions. As a politician, husband, and father, I encounter various spoken language styles: analytical or chatty, formal or informal, pointed or gentle, cooperative or decisive. Talk is the currency of politics. It is our way of negotiating, debating, and persuading. Talk is also the currency of learning-how we develop our ideas, deepen our thinking and share our feelings.
That’s why I want speaking skills, sometimes called “oracy”, to play an important part in Labor’s plans for a reformed school curriculum (课程).
Employers value speaking skills equally with reading and writing. The ability to speak well and express yourself should be something every child should master. But the curriculum doesn’t allow us to provide this. This is short-sighted. An inability to express your thoughts fluently is a key barrier to getting on and doing well in life.
Oracy is in part about good public speaking and debating skills, but in reality, it’s about teaching young people to make strong arguments, choose wise words, understand their audience, form meaningful social connections, and use facial expressions and body language to convey their message. Above all else it’s about finding your voice. To work out who you are and what you believe. If reading opens up a world of imagination and possibility, then speaking and listening opens up a lifetime of empowerment-a chance for those who feel invisible in their own country to be heard. It is about the confidence to speak out, to call out injustice or harm.
And the other side of speaking is listening, which can also be taught. Listening, truly listening, develops tolerance and understanding. And as parents we can play our part. We’ve all been there, at mealtimes, silent as we all stare at our devices. Our job, all of ours, is to get off our screens and give young people, and adults, the gift of listening.
So, oracy―speaking and listening―needs to be placed firmly at the heart of school life.
8. How does talk help a politician
A. It deepens his wishful thinking.
B. It enhances his analytical skills.
C. It strengthens persuasive power.
D. It provides emotional support.
9. Why does the author suggest a reform in the British school curriculum
A. Employers underestimate the value of speaking.
B Academic pressure makes students poor-sighted.
C. Spoken language is regarded as least important.
D. Oracy should deserve more attention at school.
10. How does the author illustrate his argument in paragraph 4
A. By sharing different opinions.
B. By clarifying the definition.
C. By describing personal experiences.
D. By employing the concept.
11. What are parents advised to do
A. Set a good example for their children.
B. Balance screen time and mealtime.
C. Have oral face-to-face communication.
D. Disconnect from the virtual world.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. C

【9题详解】
推断理解题。根据第三段“But the curriculum doesn’t allow us to provide this. This is short-sighted. An inability to express your thoughts fluently is a key barrier to getting on and doing well in life.”(但是课程不允许我们提供这些。
根据第四段“Oracy is in part about good public speaking and debating skills, but in reality, it’s about teaching young people to make strong arguments, choose wise words, understand their audience, form meaningful social connections, and use facial expressions and body language to convey their message. Above all else it’s about finding your voice.”(口语能力在某种程度上是关于良好的公共演讲和辩论技能,但实际上,它是关于教会年轻人提出有力的论点,选择明智的词汇,理解他们的听众,形成有意义的社会联系,以及使用面部表情和肢体语言来传达他们的信息。最重要的是找到自己的声音。)及“It is about the confidence to speak out, to call out injustice or harm.”(它关乎大声疾呼、揭露不公或伤害的信心。)可知,第四段作者多次利用“it is about…”这个平行结构说明Oracy“口语能力”的含义,推断出作者在第四段阐述了他的论点是通过澄清定义的手法。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“And as parents we can play our part. We’ve all been there, at mealtimes, silent as we all stare at our devices. Our job, all of ours, is to get off our screens and give young people, and adults, the gift of listening.”(作为父母,我们可以发挥自己的作用。

Roland was no exception. He was a magnificent German Shepherd (德国牧羊犬), a little lazy and overweight though. He loved to doze in the backyard. He yawned and stretched his body as he heard the slowly approaching footsteps of Mrs. Proudfoot. “Come have your lunch dear!” said Mrs. Proudfoot with her usual fondness for him and he wagged his tail affectionately in return.
Roland was licking the last piece of meat in his plate when the doorbell burst into music. Mrs. Proudfoot hurried to answer the door. Roland stood alert by her side.
“Good noon Mrs. Proudfoot”. It was Sam, her teenage neighbor. “My! My! You look pale! What happened ” asked Mrs. Proudfoot with genuine worry. She immediately waved him in and closed the door behind. Mrs. Proudfoot was a lonely widow, but was well loved in her neighborhood especially by kids, though she had no kids to call her own.
Once encouraged, Sam disclosed his dilemma. “My friend Barry lost a rare book of school library. It costs150 dollars, but he has only 55 dollars and his poor parents can’t afford to pay the rest. Barry is working parttime but that’s far from enough.” With a dramatic sigh he continued, “If he didn’t refund the loss before the end of term, he will be dismissed from final exams. That will ruin his future! I have to help him, whatever it takes. He is my best friend. “
“Don’t worry, Sammy. You want me to pay.” but Mrs. Proudfoot was interrupted. “No, No, Mrs. Proudfoot. This is not what I came here for. I’ll work for you. Would you favor me to walk your dog please For 2 dollars a day.” He looked up with begging eyes.
Mrs. Proudfoot clapped her hands in agreement, “That can’t be better! I’ve been worried’ about Roland lately. He does need some exercise! It’s nice of you to make such an offer.”
Sam thanked her over and over, “I will start tomorrow morning.”

【答案】 Sam arrived very early the next morning. Seeing Roland lazily bathed in mild sunshine with eyes narrowed into a line, Sam darted towards him, arms widely opened. Giving him a lazy glimpse, Roland politely wagged his tail and then turned his head away, falling sound asleep again. Desperately brainstorming, Sam got a piece of delicious bone from Mrs. Proudfoot. Lured by the tasty smell, Roland swiftly bounced up and jumped at the bone, following Sam out. In this way, the first day was smoothly finished. Day by day, Sam was delighted to find Roland gradually become willing and eager to have a walk outside.
A month later, Mrs. Proudfoot was delighted to find Roland fit and energetic. Enjoying the pleasure to roam along the country road with Roland, Sam also harvested a lot from the relaxing time. Eventually one day, Sam was excited to tell Mrs. Proudfoot, “Barry and I have earned enough money. Thank you, Mrs. Proudfoot! But can I continue walking Roland for you For free! “Radiantly, Mrs. Proudfoot nodded. Receiving a positive answer, Sam was wild with joy and Roland, wagging his tail merrily, as if intoxicated. Sometimes only a little kindness can ignite something shining, making the world more beautiful and harmonious.

6 What does the underlined word “tug” most probably mean in paragraph 4
A. Pull. B. Drive. C. Resistance. D. Pressure.
7. What could be the best title for the passage
A. Starman’s circling around the Earth B. The dialogue between the Earth and Mars
C. Starman’s further approach to the Mars D. SpaceX’s vision in its next space mission
B. Academic pressure makes students poor-sighted.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
