Australian Open Wheelchair Tennis Winners
Wheelchair tennis champ Kunieda won the men’s Australian Open once more on Thursday, beating a player from the United Kingdom. Diede Groot won the women’s wheelchair finals by defeating Aniek van Koot.
This is the 11th time winning the Australian Open for Japan’s Kunieda. But the two hours and 12 minutes match wasn’t an easy one. He won the first set, but the player from the United Kingdom took the second set. Kunieda came roaring back in the third set to take the prize, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. He seemed to surprise even himself. “I played the best tennis of my career,” he said, “Especially in the final set. I don’t know how I did it, but I pushed past my limit.” He staged a comeback after losing in the semi-finals of last year’s Australian Open. But it’s probably not surprising, for someone who has won several Paralympic Gold Medals and 26 Grand Slam(大满贯)singles victories.
In the women’s wheelchair finals, it was a contest between two athletes from the Netherlands. From early on, Diede Groot seemed to be in control. Much of the difference in play came from Groot’s strong and steady serve. She made her first serve count 74% of the time, In the second set, she got out to a 5-0 lead before giving up a game to Aniek van Koot. But it didn’t take her long to get back on track, winning the match 6-1, 6-1. The entire match took less than an hour. “I’m super happy,” said Diede Groot. “It’s the beginning of the year. I think I’ve showed everyone that I’m ready for the rest of the year.” It was her 13th Grand Slam singles title. Last year, she earned a “Golden Slam” by winning all four Grand Slam tournaments, as well as a Paralympic gold.
24. How did Kunieda feel after the match

Steve Davies, a 23-year-old board designer in Wales, is developing a surfboard made from mycelia(菌丝体)instead of plastic.
A 2022 report showed that more than 400,000 boards are made each year. The global market for surfboards reached S2.2 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach $3.2 billion by 2027. But about 80% of boards are made from plastic, which can take hundreds of years to break down. This will be a serious problem for the environment as the market grows.
“And even when it does break down, it can go into fish’s ecosystem(生态系统), which means that humans will end up eating this plastic,” Davies said.
Davies made his first surfboard in 2020, but the experience showed him many harmful materials were produced in making each board. During his final year at university, he started looking into mycelia and making his beloved sport more environment-friendly.
“My family owns a farm with horses, so I was quickly able to collect substrate material(基料)in the form of horse bedding, to allow the mycelia to grow in,” Davies explained. “This gave me an idea to start a surfboard business—growing surfboards on a farm near the beach and using waste materials from that very same farm, reducing the transport of materials, and therefore reducing carbon(碳)given out into the environment.”
“In the right conditions, we will grow a mycelium board in around 21 days,” Davies said. “The dream would be to make it the new standard. Connecting with nature would be the new design rules and that would be really cool. We’re using the sea and we should give back to the sea.”
28. What do the numbers in Paragraph 2 mainly show
A. Going surfing costs a lot of money. B Surfing is popular with young people.
C. Designing surfboards is a good business. D Making eco-friendly surfboards is necessary.
29. Why does Davies mention “fish’s ecosystem”
A. To explain a rule. B. To present a reason.
C. To make a comparison. D. To share an experience.
30. What is Paragraph 5mainly about
A. Why Davies loved to design surfboards.
B. What made Davies’ surfboard business possible.
C. Why Davies wanted to study mycelia at university.
D. How Davies collected substrate material to make surfboards.
31. What can we learn from Davies’ words in the last paragraph
A. He supports environment-friendly products.
B. He hopes to succeed in selling surfboards.
C. He loves to get designing ideas from sea.
D. He dreams of creating cooler surfboards.

Learning Chinese could be one of the most important decisions you ever make. Chinese is becoming the language to learn in the 21st century. With the world’s largest population and a rapidly growing middle class, China stands to become the engine of the world’s economy in the coming years. This will make learning Chinese very important for people in many industries, or for those of us who wish to visit China or learn from its culture and history.
There is an ongoing effort to modernize the writing system and standardize the language. An increasing number of people learning Chinese are learning the Mandarin, so unless you absolutely need to learn another dialect(such as Cantonese), be sure you are studying Mandarin.
For native English speakers Chinese is one of the most difficult and most different languages to learn. The vocabulary is wholly unfamiliar and unlike anything we know. In addition, in the Chinese tone system, words are spoken in rising or falling tones, which help to distinguish between them. Furthermore, there is the Chinese writing system--- a collection of thousands of individual ideograms(表意文字), or symbols, which represent a word or an idea. These ideograms have no phonetic value---that is to say, we can’t tell how the word is pronounced by how it is written. There is a method to present written Chinese in a phonetic script called pinyin. If you are learning Chinese, you’ll be working with this pinyin system, but the beauty of the traditional writing system shouldn’t be passed up. All these factors make learning Chinese difficult for us. Yet, for a determined learner, there’s always a way to overcome it.
32. Learning Chinese is becoming more and more important, because ______.
A. Chinese engines are very welcome
B. China has the world’s largest population
C. there are more and more rich people in China
D. China has become important to the world economy
33. From the text we can learn that ______.
A. the author thinks Chinese is as difficult as English
B. the author is interested in the Chinese language and its culture
C. foreign languages can play a great role in industrial development
D. as long as the pinyin system is learned well, one can learn Chinese well
34. The last paragraph mainly tells us about ______.
A. the difficulties of learning Chinese
B. the advantages of learning Chinese
C. the Chinese tone system
D. the Chinese writing system
35. What would be probably written following this text
A. The sources of Chinese characters.
B. The importance of learning Chinese.
C. The advice on how to learn Chinese.
D. The difficulties of learning other languages.
