Biology may not be everything, but genes apparently have a far greater influence on human behavior than is commonly thought. Similarities ranging from hobbies to bodily gesture are being found in pairs separated at birth. Many of these behaviors are “things you would never think of looking at if you were going to study the genetics of behavior,” says psychologist Thomas J. Bouchard, Jr. , director of the Minnesota Center for Twin and Adoption Research at the University of Minnesota.
Bouchard reports that so far, exhaustive psychological tests and questionnaires have been completed with approximately 50 pairs of identical twins reared apart, 25 pairs of fraternal twins reared apart and comparison groups of twins reared together. “We were amazed at the similarity in posture and expressive style,” says Bouchard. “It’s probably the feature of the study that’s grabbed us the most.” Twins tend to have similar mannerisms, gestures, speed and tempo in talking, habits and jokes. Many of the twins dressed in similar fashion--one male pair who had never previously met arrived in England sporting identical beards, haircuts, glasses and shirts.
The most striking example of common psychopathology (精神病理学) however, came from a pair of twins raised apart. One had been reared by his own (poor) family the other had been adopted into a “good solid upper-middle-class family.” Both are now considered to be antisocial personalities, suffering from lack of impulse control, and both have criminal histories. Although the twins share, on average, 50 percent of their genes, Bouchard suggests that the overlap is probably considerably more with this pair.
Personality similarities between the identical twins raised apart are almost the same as they are with identical twins raised together, according to the results of a test developed by University of Minnesota psychologist Auke Tellegen. His personality questionnaire contains scales such as “social closeness,” “harm avoidance” and “well-being.” The researchers were especially surprised to find that “traditionalism” --a trait implying conservatism and respect for authority--can be inherited. In fact, says Bouchard, his and other studies have found about 11 personality traits that appear to have significant genetic input.
Overall, the emerging findings of the Minnesota study constitute a powerful disproof of those who maintain that environmental influences are the primary shaping forces of personality. The textbooks are going to have to be rewritten, Bouchard predicts.
28.Why does Bouchard say these behaviors are “things you would never think of looking at if you were going to study the genetics of behavior ”
A.These behaviors seemed too unimportant for scientists to observe.
B.These behaviors seemed too intimate to allow scientists to observe them.
C.Psychologists assumed these external characteristics could not be biologically based.
D.Psychologists assumed the causes of these behaviors were too complicated for current methods of observations.
29.The word “identical” (in para.2) most probably means________.
A.fashionable B.alike C.complex D.identified
30.According to the passage, Auke Tellegen agrees that________.
A.some textbooks on genes and behavior will be rewritten quite soon.
B.people’s behaviors and personalities depend at large on their genes
C.his personality questionnaire can indicate people’s 11 personality traits
D.the environmental influences have great effect on people’s personalities
31.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.Twins generally share the same hobbies and gestures if they are raised apart.
B.Genes have a greater influence on human behavior than is commonly thought.
C.People from upper-middle-class family are the same as those from poor family.
D.Twins tend to dress in similar fashion even when brought up in different families.

Small batteries are big problems, but nobody really pays attention to where they end up. Researchers at the Cellulose & Wood Materials Laboratory are working to address this problem. Their new research paper describes a water-activated paper battery developed from environmentally friendly materials that could eventually present a sustainable alternative to the more harmful batteries common in low-power devices.
The paper battery has the same key components as standard batteries but packages them differently. Like a typical chemical battery, it has a positively charged side called a cathode, a negatively charged side called an anode, and a conductive material called an electrolyte (电解质) between the two. A traditional battery’s components are encased in plastic and metal; in the new battery, the anode and cathode are inks printed onto the front and back of a piece of paper. That paper is filled with salt, which dissolves (溶解) when the paper is dampened with water. The resulting saltwater solution acts as the electrolyte.
Sustainable materials were a precondition for the researchers, who considered only safe and plentiful ingredients to create their device. “We were fairly confident that we would have something that would work in the end, but developing these materials and ink systems is challenging,” says Gustav Nystr m, senior author of the study.
After trying hundreds of formulations for the battery components, the researchers settled on a graphite ink to make the cathode, a zinc ink for the anode, and salt-filled paper to create the electrolyte.
When the paper is dry, the battery is shelf-stable. Add just a couple of drops of water, however, and the salt dissolves, allowing electrons to flow. Once the paper is dampened, the battery activates within 20 seconds. The new battery’s operating performance declines as the paper dries. When the scientists re-wet the paper during testing, the battery regained functionality and lasted an hour before beginning to dry out again.
Although the researchers demonstrated that their battery could power an alarm clock, the paper batteries are unlikely to replace standard ones on store shelves. Nystr m envisions a future where these paper batteries could make their way into products within the next two to five years. “The performance that you see on this device, I think, is sufficient for a lot of other applications already,” he says. It is mostly a matter of scaling up production and integrating the batteries into systems such as diagnostic tests and environmental sensors.”
32.How is the paper battery similar to the standard battery
A.They both have two charged sides and an electrolyte.
B.They are both packaged in plastic and metal.
C.The key components are environmentally friendly.
D.Both batteries can operate for only an hour.
33.________ is the condition for the paper battery to work.
A.Heating the salt B.Wetting the paper
C.Drying out the battery D.Charging the electrons
34.Nystr m will most likely agree with the prediction that ________.
A.major technological breakthrough will be made in the near future
B.all home appliances will be powered by paper batteries
C.paper batteries will have longer shelf life than traditional ones
D.the future for a wide application of paper batteries is not far off
35.Which of the following statements best describes the significance of paper battery
A.It advances the battery manufacturing industry.
B.It is a low-cost alternative to traditional battery.
C.It is a creative way to reduce potential e-waste.
D.It turns dangerous e-waste into useful products.

Tomato Changed My Life
Doing things-without being planned was never my strength.
As a 14-year-old, I would refuse to go for walks around the block with my friends if I was the least bit behind in my schoolwork.
Unlike most teenagers, I lived not in my room, but in an unused kitchen upstairs where I spread my books and papers on a large round table. I spent considerable time there, working continuously for hours, and my mother worried. She would try to lure (引诱) me away. “Come and watch the parade!” she would call from downstairs. “All neighbors are out there!” She thought of all kinds of tricks-the swimming pool, ice cream, stray cats and turtles-to remove me from my -studies, but nothing ever worked.
Later, in college, the pattern continued. The library and my college dorm replaced the unused kitchen at home. When spring came along friends would stop by my dorm or peer into my library room to persuade me to play Frisbee on the lawn. “No, I would almost always say.” I have too much to do.
My college study days were gone, but not my need and love for schedules. My friends and sisters tried to keep me away from my plans, but they were hardly ever successful.
This summer, though, while house sitting for my parents, I was persuaded to change my plans in the most unexpected way. The sight of tomatoes growing in my mother’s garden lured me out of my tightly scheduled world. They drew me with the power of a lover’s gaze. Hundreds of them were turning ripe and red by the minute, decorating the garden like decorations on a Christmas tree.
“If I have time, I’ll make tomato sauce (番茄酱).” I told myself. But my long week in the house by myself was already filled with things to do: writing, and finishing a project that I brought home from the office.
Then, watching the fascinating tomatoes continuously falling to the ground in ever-greater numbers, again I mentally argued about all the things I had planned and needed to do.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

M: Yeah, at least three.
W: Is that with a living room to share plus the kitchen and a bathroom
M: That sounds good. But we must have a bathroom with a shower. We don’t mind having a bath, but the shower is crucial.
W: Okay. I’ll just key that in. Are you interested in any particular area
M: Well the city center is our first preference. But we’d consider anything in the western suburbs. We aren’t interested in the North or the east of the city.
W: OK, I’m just getting up all the flats on our books.

W: Morning, everyone!
M: Your Food Exchange really takes our town by storm these days, Lisa. About 1,000 people in town have joined it. Where did you get this brilliant idea
W: Well, my neighbor has plenty of vegetables in her backyard. She often shares them with me, or they may go bad. So, I came up with the idea of starting a food exchange. In this way, people can share food with each other. No food will go to waste.
M: Nice one! We’ve heard that the Food Exchange was built by the roadside, right
W: Yeah. Actually, it’s just a simple wooden stand. People bring their home-grown vegetables and fruits there and take home what they want. And they’re expected to post a video or some photos on their social media. Thus, others know what has been added or taken.
M: What about those people who don’t grow anything
W: Ha-ha, I’m one of those people. I usually take some fresh fruit, jam or dried vegetables there.

第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Lǎozìhào refers to the old and famous shops, which have always been reliable and trustworthy and still enjoy 56 irreplaceable position in people’s minds since long time. Not only do they represent high quality and good reputation, they have also become an indispensable part in 57 (people) daily life.
These famous and time-honored shops, eg, Quanjude and Tongrentang, 58 (locate) in Qianmen, the center of Beijing, all have represented the highly developed 59 (commerce) culture of old Beijing.
But these shops are more about businesses; they are also a historical and cultural phenomenon. He 60 has never tasted a roast duck will regret his whole life--such common sayings have made Quanjude a 61 (represent) of Beijing. Many other similar two-part allegorical sayings among the folks have also 62 (vivid) revealed the very characteristics of these old shops.
Nowadays, with the rapid development of economy and fierce competition in modern society, some Lǎozìhào shops have been keeping pace 63 the times and carrying forward their brands through continuous reforms and innovations. That’s why they 64 (stand) the test of time and survived in competition, while some others have faded into the history due to their inability 65 (adapt) to the rapid changes in modern social life.
【答案】
56.an 57.people’s 58.located 59.commercial 60.who 61.representative 62.vividly 63.with 64.have stood 65.to adapt
people和daily life之间是所属关系,因此空格处用名词所有格people’s,故填people’s。
故填to adapt。

Thank you.
【答案】Dear students,
Today, I am glad to share my opinion on the topic—“Love Myself”.
For me, loving oneself is-the foundation of mental health. By embracing our strengths, uniqueness and even our weaknesses, we will build confidence and resilience. To illustrate, I’d like to offer an example which is from my own life. There was a time when I struggled with math and failed many times. Instead of beating myself up, I learned to seek help and dedicate time to practice while relaxing myself through leisure activities. Consequently, my grades improved, my self-confidence grew and I came to appreciate my efforts.
So, I urge everyone to begin the journey of self-love. Acknowledge your accomplishments, forgive your mistakes, and be kind to yourselves.
Thank you.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Finally, I gave in.

A month later, my parents came back.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Finally, I gave in. I picked up the recipe that I had copied down from a friend. “Prepare a little bit of water with garlic and onions. Add…,” it read. I scarched for 20 minutes in the kitchen cabinet and pulled out a huge white china pot. I washed the tomatoes, cutting away sections that were spoiled, and sliced and threw them into the pot. I swayed the watery mixture as if I were washing gold. Meanwhile, turning on the stereo, I sang along with Billy Joel and reviewed a step I’d picked up in my swing-dance class.
A month later, my parents came back. They found a daughter who had discovered the beauty of flexibility. I shared stories of my tomato adventures, and we laughed together. My mom, the same woman who used to try and lure me away from my books, now shared in my newfound passion for the kitchen. As I stood in the kitchen, surrounded by the rich flavour of tomato sauce, I realized the importance of allowing life to surprise us. Those tomatoes had taught me a valuable lesson: balance in life is not just about sticking to schedules and plans; it’s also about embracing the unexpected, reminding me that there’s a world of joy beyond the limitations of a strict schedule.
