Archer Calder is a 16-year-old high school student from Utah. His sister is 14-year-old Della, who has a disease that makes her unable to speak.
In 2021, Archer was searching online for an app that might help Della express s her needs, wants, likes and dislikes. "It's always been my dream to be able to communicate with her the way I would with anybody else, "he said.
But the result was upsetting. The related apps were greatly expensive, and didn't offer everything he was looking for. So he decided to make his own app, completely open and free. That's how Freespeech was born.
Freespeech helps people communicate by enabling them to press buttons (按钮) that stand for words. Users can string (把……连在一起) together sentences by pressing many buttons in order. The app opens up a whole new world of communication for people who are unable to talk.
"It was different growing up with a brother or sister that you couldn't talk with, "Archer explained. "For the first time I was able to communicate with my sister because of this app, kind of like I would communicate with anybody else. It was kind of a special moment that I had never experienced before."
However, Freespeech app still had some disadvantages, so Archer turned to other programmers for help by making the source code (源代码) public. He first put it online, and the reaction was so positive that he shared it on GitHub, where experienced programmers helped upgrade it.
Archer says even if Freespeech only helps one person, his sister, all the time and effort he put in was worthwhile. Somehow, the public have a feeling that Archer's app is going to help far more than just one person!
24. What made Archer create Freespeech
A. His eagerness to cure Della. B. His sister's repeated request.
C. His wish to communicate with Della. D. His curiosity about online apps.
25. What can we learn about Freespeech
A. It is easy to use.
B. It has been widely used.
C. It changes the way of communication.
D. It improves Archer's relationship with Della.
26. How did Archer feel when using Freespeech at first
A. Proud. B. Doubtful. C. Nervous. D. Excited.
27. Why did Archer make Freespeech source code public
A. To show his app is practical.
B. To improve his Freespeech app.
C. To recommend others to use his app.
D. To inspire other programmers to create apps.

I was 11 years old when I asked my mum for piano lessons in 2010.We were in the fallout of the recession (衰退) . She said a polite“no”.
That didn't stop me. I googled the measurements of a keyboard, drew the keys on a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes on an online keyboard and "play" them back on my paper one—keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. I spent six months playing without touching a real piano. Once my mum saw that I was serious, she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons.
I still remember the first one. I was struck by how real the sound of the piano was. I sat my grade one after eight lessons. Once I started secondary school, we couldn't afford lessons again. I passed grade three, then grade five, practising only on my piece of paper.
One evening, when I was about 13, my mum said she had a surprise for me; it was an electronic keyboard, bought with more borrowed money. It was the first time I'd played for her. She was in astonishment.
My school didn't offer A Level Music. I found the Purcell School for young musicians. The tryouts were difficult. Some of the questions involved the judgement about the composer or when the music was written. I felt overwhelmed. To my amazement, I was offered a place.
At Purcell, I spent two years working as hard as I could. I performed to raise money and saved enough to buy my first piano.
When I left Purcell, I was awarded the senior piano prize and senior academic music prize. I am now at the Guildhall School of Music Drama in London. I feel proud: It's been 10 years since I drew my paper piano, and I'm at one of the world's leading music schools.
The irony is that I continue to do a lot of my practice away from the piano: what we call mental practice. The paper piano helped spark my curiosity about how music works, the building blocks that form the pieces.

A. surprised B. proud C. satisfied D. curious
31. What's the author's main purpose of writing this article
A. To introduce the method of mental practice.

C. To describe how costly it is to learn an instrument.
D. To share how he convinced his mum to buy a piano.
D
How are you feeling today Often when we ask people that question, they reply "not bad" or "could be worse". But what would make us feel "perfect" Maybe we could live better by being healthier, less stressed and more motivated—but how
Of course there are many ways of improving our mental hcalth, but sometimes there are small and simple solutions to helping improve our well-being. It's something the TV programme Easy Ways to Live Well has been looking at. It suggested several "health hacks" which the programme's presenters tried and gave their "seal of approval". And maybe they could help us too.
Firstly, to deal with putting on weight and to cut the calorics, the programme found sniffing peppermint(薄荷) stops our longing for a snack. Prcsenter, chef and writer Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall says a scientific theory called "mutual competition" shows that a strong smell can distract our brain from the food we're thinking about.
If your addiction to your smartphone is getting you down, it's suggested that turning your phone screen grey helps you reduce screcn time because a black and white screen becomes less attractive to look at. With recent studics showing our phones can make us 26% less productive and increase our stress, it seems like a no-brainer to try this "dim" idea.
Fancy a swim in ice-cold water Well, the TV programme found a daily dip in freezing water gets you used to the stress of doing it and therefore prepares you for other life stresses. And another way to "chill out" is to leave your smartphone at home, immerse yourself in a forest, and breathe in the fresh air. Forest bathing is the perfect tonic for the stresses of urban life.
Other life-improving ideas included things such as singing to reduce pain and walking around more to get away from our sedentary (久坐不动) lives. But whatever way we choose to adopt, it seems any change to our lifestyle can help improve our body and mind.
32. What's the function of a series of questions in the first paragraph
A. To provide more background information.
B. To provoke thinking and bring out the topic.
C. To expect readers can give specific answers.
D. To lead readers to focus on physical health.
33. What's the author's attitude towards the TV programme Easy Ways to Live Well
A. Favorable. B. Unclear. C. Negative. D. Critical.
34. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage
A. The strong smell of peppermint is bound to cut the calories.
B. To remove life stresses, you must have a swim in freezing water.
C. Making the phone screen colorful makes us more focused and efficient.
D. An ice-water swim and forest bathing have the similar effect on stresses.
35. What's the purpose of the passage
A. To tell readers how to be perfect.
B. To introduce a popular TV programme.
C. To offer some ways to better well-being.
D. To get rid of some bad habits in daily life.

Losing a parent is one of the most painful parts of life. No matter how old we are when they leave us, it can be a heartbroken experience. Our memories are all about them and happy reminders of their love turn into our most valuable treasures. That's how Mara Soriano feels about the teddy bear that she tragically lost in her recent move to a new apartment.
Diagnosed with cancer, Mara Soriano's mother, Marilyn, gave her daughter the bear as a gift in 2017.After her mother's death last June, the gift became even more special. "That bear was basically the last reminder of my mom. It was her voice that accompanied me, "she said in an interview.
The plush (长毛绒) toy didn't cost a lot, but it contained a recording of her mother's voice telling her that she loved her and was proud of her. The bear, called Mama Bear, was in the backpack that contained electronics like an iPad and a Nintendo Switch. When the bag was stolen last week during the move, the 28-year-old was heartbroken—not for the gadgets (小装置), but for Mama Bear.
Mara posted a photo of her and her Mama Bear on Instagram, explaining the importance of the bear. Millions of users were touched by the story. More and more people were talking about the bear, but there was no good news for Mara. So again and again she posted the story about the item online, hoping it could catch more viewers' attention in a big way.
Actor Ryan Reynolds was moved by Mara's story and then posted an appeal for Mama Bear's safe return. "I think we all need this bear to come home," he wrote. Along with the message, he also offered a reward for the people who found the bear.

Among the many theories about Nessie, the most well-known one is that Nessie is a long-necked dinosaur that somehow survived after other dinosaurs died out. Some other people believe that the creature is actually an extremely large fish. Now the mystery of Nessie may have no place to hide. A New Zealand professor is leading his international team to the lake next month. They plan to take some of the water and study genetic material from the lake to see what species live there. The 51-year-old professor says he does not believe the stories about Nessie at all, but he wants to take people on an interesting trip and communicate some science to them along the way. The professor said that when creatures move in water, they leave small pieces of their DNA behind. He and his team will take water from different points around the lake and at different depths. After removing the impure material from the water, they will compare the acquired DNA with all known species. He said they should have answers by the end of the year.
