一、Pre-class

Teachers' activities: using courseware to present the picture of Li River at the bottom of the text and asking students:
Look at the picture. What place do you think it might be?
Do you think it is beautiful?How do you describe the picture?
Did you know the Li River had been once polluted?
Objective: to activate students' background knowledge about Li River and to pave the way for students' understanding of the text.
While-class
Student Activities: (1) skim through the questions in activity 2, then read the text to find out the key information. The teacher should ask the students to answer the questions in activity 2 with complete sentences.
1 What were some of the negative effects on the Li River as a result of the growth in tourism
Answer:
Many of the tourists frequently threw garbage into the river. Kit Itches on board were using lots of oil, which was often thrown into the water. Water pollution levels increased, with more household and commercial waste ending up in the river. More chemicals were used to increase crop production, leading to severe water quality issues and causing a decrease in the number of fish species.
2 What measures have been taken to improve the Li River's water quality
Answer:
Construct waste water treatment facilities; improve the collection and transport of household waste; close or move dozens of polluting enterprises; set up strict regulations regarding further industrial development; introduce new rules regarding tour boat routes and garbage disposal methods; use the media to spread environmental awareness and encourage greater use of clean energy; carry out inspections regularly and fine tourist organisations for abuses...
3 What is the "River Chief System"
Answer:
"River Chief System" is an initiative that holds senior officials responsible for reducing water pollution.

Student Activities: (1) students in groups of four, select an environmental problem, and according to the requirements of activity 4 in advance on-line access to relevant information. (2) in class, each student group shares the information they have consulted and filters the information from four aspects according to the questions provided in activity 4. (3) students can refer to the paragraph structure table in activity 3, use mind maps or tables to outline reports. For example:

(4)The members of the group work together to write part of the report. When completed, reports are exchanged among the different groups, which evaluate each other on the basis of the evaluation checklist for Activity 5 and give specific suggestions for modifications. AIM: Activity 5 guides students to use the writing evaluation checklist to give feedback to their peers. While evaluating the work of others, students also gained a better understanding of the writing requirements. At the same time, they will compare the work of others and their own work, appreciate and absorb the advantages of other people's work, improve their own work.

Each group presents the revised report to the class.
四、Summary
本单元的写作有关环境问题和如何保护环境,要求学生能够就环境保护发表自己的想法。这对应新课标中“人与环境”这一主题。在写作时,应注意以下几个方面:
1.概述目前环境的状况;
2.列出环境问题以及导致问题的原因;
3.为解决这些问题而采取的计划或措施;
4.人称以第一、第三人称为主,时态以一般现在时为主。

As we know, our health is closely connected with the degree of air pollution. Our air has become polluted and it is high time we took action to slow down the air pollution.
First of all, practical measures should be taken to stop some factories from giving off waste gases. Those gases are sometimes poisonous and greatly pollute our atmosphere. Secondly, se should plant as many trees as possible. Trees can clean up the air, supply fresh air to us and help improve the natural environment. Finally, drive fuel-efficient cars. If possible, walk or bicycle to save energy and use new energy to produce less or no pollution to the atmosphere.
If we do our best to protect our environment from now on, there is still hope for us to enjoy blue sky and breathe clean air every day. (106 words)
