Teaching procedures Step 1 Lead-in A. Get Ss to go through the text “First Impressions” and tell the teacher how Han Jing’s first school day was (How did she feel What did she do Who did she meet with ). Ss may say sentence as below: She was a little anxious. (S P) She made new friends. (S V O) The teacher told them a funny story. (S V IO DO ) She found most of her classmates and teachers friendly and helpful. (S V O OC) The guy talked too much. (S V A) She had her first math class at senior high school. (There be…) Present all the sentences and lead Ss to think about what are the basic elements for a sentence and guide them to use their previous knowledge and recall what they have learnt. Step 2 Presentation Lead Ss to learn the sentence structure, SV; SVO; SP; SV IO DO; SVOC; SVA; SVOA; There be…one by one and learn the elements of a sentence. A. All of us laughed! S V Subject is part of a sentence indicates what it is about or who or what performs the action. It can be nouns, pronouns, -ing, to do, clauses. Verb is to say what someone or something does or what happens to them, or to give information about them. B. Subject + Link-verb/ Be + predicative She was a little anxious. S P C. Subject + Verb + Object She made new friends. S V O Object can a noun, noun phrase, or pronoun that identifies what or who receives the action or the effect. D. Subject + Verb + Indirect object + Direct object He told us a funny story. S V IO DO A direct object is the person or thing directly receives the action or effect of the verb. An indirect object answers the question of to whom, for whom, or for what and accompanies a direct object. E. Subject + Verb+ Adverbial Subject + Verb+ Object + Adverbial Subject + Verb+ Object + Complement A adverbial is a word that further describes or modifies a verb’s action. Read the passage and analyze the structures of the underlined sentences. How would you like to go to school and travel the world at the same time For Tim, that dream has come true! This term, Tim and his classmates are living on a ship! They take the same subjects as you do, like maths and English. They also learn about ships and the sea. Tim writes his parents an email every week and tell tells them what happened on the ship. Tim loves living on the ship. There's always something exciting to do. And, after a long day of study, he likes to watch the sun go down and wait for the stars to come out. Studying and doing homework seem much more fun when you are at sea! Step4 Production Please write a paragraph about your own first day of senior high school. Step 5 Summary Lead SS to summarize what they have learnt about the elements of sentences and how we can combine them together to make different sentence structures.
