2023 年 6 月我的写作之路
When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. With my heart hammering hard, I ripped the ordinary envelope sent by the committee open, not expecting anything pleasant. However, much to my surprise, there slipped out a glistering golden medal, with a big “Top 1" and my initials on it. Believe me, you can't imagine how ear-splitting my cry was, though I didn't care about the rank but my work paying off. Later in the award presentation, I couldn't help curving my lips into an ear-to-ear grin, and an expert in the judging panel remarked my novel as "highly innovative”, "full of talent" or something like that.
But all I wanted to do was talking to my teacher.
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. There were several students around him when I handed him the medal with slightly trembling arms, but I had never seen him laughing harder than he did at that moment. For nearly a minute, the ringing laughter with exhilaration echoed in the office, and I found myself in his tight embrace then, "You ARE my best student, bro.” He said, giving me a mighty pat on my shoulder. "Just write and go ahead." Tears mingled with both pleasure and thankfulness streaming down, I felt like Revere's horse once again. I had got tired. I had had doubts, l had wanted to quit, but I must keep going and work hard because my future was there waiting for me.

2023 年 1 月首考蜂鸟感恩
I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired Or too thirsty
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.
Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say goodbye.”

A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. As I pulled up(停车) outside the farm and walked on the familiar blackberry-lined path again, my gaze(凝视) involuntarily(无心地,不自觉地) rested on the milking house. Apparently, the broken window had been fixed by my friends after my leave last time. Naturally, it brought me back to the encounter with the lovely creature, whose bright eyes and exceptional intelligence left me an indelible(不可磨灭的,擦不掉的) impression. For a while, I set my mind a rest and went to the dinner party. During the cookout, the host also added that the bird sometimes would stay out of the milking house for a whole day and all the guests were amazed at it. Scenes of the humming bird kept presenting themselves to me, and there was a wave of anticipation to see it again in my mind. However, it didn't come true. A little upset, I squeezed into(挤进) the car after my friends walked me to it.
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. Hovering in the blue sky, she turned from person to person desperately as if to search for something. Excited by her unexpected appearance, I flew out of the car and stretched out my cupped hands. The moment she recognized me, she let out a squeaking call (吱吱叫) and perched on(栖息在...上) my palms, nudging (轻推,轻触) my fingers with its furry head. So the familiar squeal(尖叫声) wasn't a fantasy, and her whole day's waiting made for(促成) the reunion. Seemingly sensing my feelings, she beat her wings(拍打翅膀) and soared(翱翔) high into the sky, humming(哼) a cheerful little tune. “She must have come to say good-bye to you again, one of my friend said. At that moment.I felt that the connection between us paled everything.

My husband and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our children. It’s amazing to watch as they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our oldest daughter, Kaytlin, called me to the doorway. Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel.
We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother. But after a long wait – and looking all around our house for signs of a nest or a mother – we realized the tiny squirrel was lost.
Shaking terribly, he was weak, thin, and hungry. We tried to find an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife experts in our area. After some quick research, we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was in order.
More research taught us how much to feed him, how to estimate his age, how and when to wean (断奶) him, and that we should let him go as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I took turns in feeding “Squirt.” Kaytlin took on the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a bottle, and she woke in the night for his feeds.
To our relief, Squirt soon became healthy and strong. Within a few weeks he became more active. He would chatter (吱吱叫) for his next meal, playfully go around the girls, and lie down on them for sleep. It wasn’t long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny. Just like a child, he would play in the grass some and then run back to Kaytlin for safety. Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material.

One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels. At first, Squirt was somehow intimidated to encounter such a family near his half-done nest. So he just scurried off the tree and hid himself behind Kaytlin. Then the curious squirrel poked his head out, eyes scanning the squirrels while the family were doing the same. Upon seeing this, Kaytlin took out some acorns and placed them on the grass. Minutes later, the family came down. Though in different color, Squirt mingled with the baby gray squirrels very soon. They kept chattering while nabbing the acorn, as if they were brothers and sisters. After that day, he played almost all day in the trees.
One night, Squirt didn't come back to our house and it rained hard. Kaytlin decided to look for him. I accompanied her to the tree that was Squirt's most common playground. She moved the flashlight through the foliage, expecting the familiar figure. Suddenly, she spotted something red flashing by. By the light of the flashlight, the picture that the squirrels huddled together in a tree hole came into our sight. Kaytlin turned to me nervously, "Mom, we must take him home." "Do you still remember what the research said ” I asked. Then Kaytlin fell silent. After a while, she placed the acorns she grabbed before getting out under the tree, " Yes, I believe he could survive with his families." It's amazing to see a world in a squirrel for my daughter, and a growth in a girl, for me.

2022 年 06 月 David 跑步
It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. He lowered his head and rubbed his hands. Obviously he was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Trying to break the silence, I tapped him on the shoulder gently. “You are special, but that’s your uniqueness.Today you’re here to show that uniqueness with all your diligence and determination”, I ventured in an encouraging voice. My simple words spoken from the heart, found their way straight into his. He raised his head and stared into my eyes. I sensed that his dilemma gave way to trust in me with his eyes twinkling with determination and hope. That familiar David, hard-working, determined, full of positive energy, came back.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. I clenched my fist and waved at him.He gave me a determined look, as if to say that he would not change his mind. He took a deep breath to calm himself down, and then toed the line ready to run. With a bang, every runner shot like an arrow. At first, everyone’s attention was focused on the winner. But as David, the last one, made it to the finishing line, time seemed to stand still. Thunderous applause broke out with the name David echoing again and again. Maybe if we knew what other people were thinking, we’d know that no one’s ordinary. And we all deserve a standing ovation at least once in our lives.

2022 年 6 月 第一次社区服务
I needed to do something in my community(社区)in order to complete the community service hours required to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did, too. It seemed like a good thing to do.
I thought that we would just be passing out dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building many homeless people were gathering. It wasn't until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began serving dinner.
As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I'd come face to face with the homeless: How should I act How would they treat me Would they hate me for having more than they did While some of the people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous. I didn't have too much time to worry about it. I was assigned(分配)to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I needed help, she'd be right there, which I found quite comforting.
I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them wore clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had tally given up on life, while others seemed to be making the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but they all needed a good meal and a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who didn't have a place to call home and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.

Paragraph 1: As they came in my direction, I put on my brightest and happiest smile.
Paragraph 2: I was so happy that I had earned my service hours in this way.
As they came in my direction, I put on my brightest and happiest smile. Nervous as I felt, I did my utmost to keep myself calm and hand out the delicately-wrapped meal to those in need, with my hands trembling. Upon seeing it, every one of them beamed with smile, gently murmured “Thank you” and bowed to me sincerely, which brought warmth straight into my heart. The passing time witnessed the smooth process of this event. It was not until the night wiped out the last ray of sun that we finished our community service for the homeless.
I was so happy that I had earned my service hours in this way. Not only did I clear my previous prejudice against those who seemed to be dangerous and unamiable, but also I extended a helping hand to those who wanted food and clothes. I suddenly came to realize that not everyone was blessed with fortune and born to be wealthy. Therefore, we should always keep grateful for what life blessed us with. However, we did have the power to share our happiness with others, that is, spreading love. Love is everything, like the clear moon hanging high in the sky, spreading its comforting moonlight selflessly to everyone.

When Dr. Henderson was assigning(指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn't assign me to work with the fiercely competitive, extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运)would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren't there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn't mean or abusive; he just gave me the impression he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn't look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didn't say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades—the exact opposite of me. I was outmatched. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers. I wasn't sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.

We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. With his rich academic knowledge to back him up, my teammate quickly came up with a detailed plan of evaluating our peer’s mental health states and trying to associate them with how our participants get along with their family members. Reaching an agreement, we hurried ourselves to get down to business, my teammate handing out questionnaires while I did most of the interviewing. Every two days we met at the library to do the paperwork and discussed it over lunch. Serious as the fellow was, it gradually occurred to me that he actually possessed a curious mind and was amazingly talkative when it came to scientific research which quenched his thirst to learn. It didn’t take long before I began looking forward to presenting the project.
Then one day I got word that he was admitted to the hospital for a serious disease. Startled and anxious, I got butterflies in my stomach as it was near the big day when we were ought to do the presentation. Rushing to the hospital, I was greeted by my teammate, lying on the bed, with a pale face but a weak smile on his lips. It seemed as if he could sense my discomfort because he reassured me that he would show up to school. “We are a happy band of brothers, aren’t we ” The morning of the following Monday witnessed our success and how our joint efforts blossomed into an “A” and rapturous applause from Dr. Henderson. Tears blurring my vision, I quietly said thanks to my teammate and held his feeble hands tightly, for I not only learned team spirit but I also reaped invaluable friendship.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Faced with the mess the twins had made of the kitchen, Father felt annoyed but tried to contain himself. Jenna ran up to him, whispering “We... We just want to make breakfast for Mom as a Mother's Day gift."After he learned what it was all about, his annoyance gave way to relief and delight. Immediately, he joined them and they started all over again. Soon the French toast and chicken porridge were ready, the kitchen filled with the scent of breakfast and the sweetness of a family. Looking at the work, the three exchanged an understanding smile. After signaling them to keep it a secret, Father slipped into the bedroom, pretending to know nothing about it.
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. Still a little sleepy, Mother failed to figure out what they were up to. “Happy Mother's Day!”The twins greeted her. “We made breakfast for you as you do that for us. Mom, we love you!”Though still in her pajamas, Mother took a bite of the toast and sipped the hot porridge. Lost in the delicious breakfast and pure love from her twins, she sobbed, with delightful tears streaming down her face. The whole room was bathed in a happy Mother's Day atmosphere.

My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn’t understand my world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn’t really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass(超过)anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone(长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb’s-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, "A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household." My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

The pay day arrived at last.
I understood immediately what my parents were worried about.
When I brought my paycheck home it was $119-my dad wanted to talk to me. He told me to wait in the living room for a while. Silence reigned in the room. I sat on the sofa, eyes glued to the money I earned. I kept digging in my mind for words to argue with my dad if he announced that the money wasn't mine. Just then, the door opened and in came my dad. The moment he sat down beside me, I gripped the paycheck more firmly, ready to argue. However, he gently placed his right hand on my shoulder and said, “I know you have grownup a lot through your work...” Then there was a long pause. He withdrew his hand and slowly continued,“You deserve the money and the money is yours now.”
I was surprised that my dad allowed me to use the money as I wished. In the blink of an eye, numerous fun activities I could do presented themselves to me. I sprang to my feet and kept jumping, still wild with joy and astonishment. On that day, after calculating my budget, I went to the local store and bought many things I wanted - a new football, a baseball bat and a pair of sneakers and so on. Better yet, the idea of going back to the farm and working more popped into my mind. At exactly that moment, I realized why father let me have the money-it was his expectation for my future, his encouragement and quiet love. And that was something I might never surpass.

Pumpkin (南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage-I carried an 85-pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I’m unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork (软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight,I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.

It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer.
The video was posted the Monday before Halloween.
I was stuck for five or six minutes though it felt much longer. Then a mixture of sounds swarmed into my ears. My sister’s giggle, mom’s screaming, Jason’s spluttering explanation, all were like hissing fires around me. On the verge of madness, I found my choked voice tremulous and a whimper escaped my throat. “Stay still,” comforted mom, stroking my stuttering back gently, “we’ll cut the pumpkin.” I sensed a knife gingerly pricked into the hole and slithered along the surface, making a crack exposed. With an ear-shattering bang, the pumpkin was torn apart. Gasping for crisp air greedily with newly-freed nose, I spun around , only to see something more thrilling in store for me --- Dad had record everything!
That video was posted online the Monday before Halloween. Shares and likes surged dramatically, and soon everyone nearby was impressed by my “heroic” deed. Even I myself got amused by the stupid but childlike act. Time flew fast and the Halloween approached. As the sun dipped below the horizon and night descended, the eerie atmosphere began to curdle and haunt in the neighborhood. I was chatting merrily with Jason when someone knocked, “ Trick or treat!” I opened the door, stunned to see a kid bearing a huge delicately-carved pumpkin outside his head! I beamed and burst into chuckles. Notes:

2021 年八省联考 好心的墨西哥一家人
During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.
I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.

When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I’d had lunch.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After they left, I got into my Jeep and opened the paper bag.
When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I’d had lunch. It was then that I was aware that I didn’t have lunch. To be honest, after several hours’ hard work, my stomach was rumbling(发出持续而低沉的声音) with hunger. Somewhat embarrassed,
I replied, “no!” the girl said with a smile, “Come on! Join us. The sandwich is my mother’s specialty(特色食品).” With moved tears rolling around my eyes, I reached for the sandwich. After devouring((尤指因饥饿而狼吞虎咽地吃光) it like a wolf, I felt that it was the tastiest sandwich that I had ever had. Seeing my looks, they all burst out laughing. Then, the girl’s mother had another sandwich placed in a paper bag and handed it to me, saying gently, “Keep it and have it later! We have to go now.”
After they left, I got into my jeep and opened the paper bag. Inside the paper bag were an sandwich and the bill given by me. Grasping the paper bag, I was rooted to the spot, a warm current rising in my heart. How grateful I was to the family reaching out a helping hand to me. Indifferent as most of people I met on the road were, there were still some people like this family who were so helpful and considerate. From then on, I placed a jack and some common tools in my car. When meeting people in need on the road, I would spare no efforts to help them like the Mexican family. As the saying goes, “It is a blessing to get love from others and to care for others is also a blessing.” Notes:

When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I'd had lunch. Smiling awkwardly, I nodded and said yes. However, the sound of my stomach grumbling(咕咕叫) betrayed(背叛) me. Apparently, she read my mind. A smile of sympathy flashing across her face, she suddenly turned around and darted toward her truck. Seconds later, “Here you are. It will do you good,” said the girl, grinning(咧着嘴笑) mysteriously. I looked at the little girl, whose starry eyes glittered(闪亮;闪耀;光彩夺目) with something sly(诡诈的;狡诈的). The family were ready to leave. The father started the truck, with the mother and the girl seated in the back seats, waving goodbye to me.Waving back with a smile and wishing them a safe trip, I watched the truck disappear into the distance.
After they left,I got into my Jeep and opened the paper bag. The food’s delicious smell filled my nostrils(鼻孔), making my mouth water( 流口水 ). Not until I opened the paper bag did I spot a 20-dollar bill along with a note, reading,“Kindness is free.”Stunned and moved, I stared at the note, feeling guilty about my previous thought that all people were indifferent. Having spent a tough year littered with severe hardship(使饱含,使遍布(一般指不好的东西)), I cried my heart out in my Jeep on this deserted road for the kindness from the strangers. It was the first time I had been not sick of my car trouble but lucky for seeing a beautiful heart. From that day on, every time I meet someone in need, I always reach out to them, hoping to pass on the kindness4 that Mexican family offered me.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy — his name was Bernard — had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don’t see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money.” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us?Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John 's idea, she thought it was a good one, too. Though they were not well off, the urge to lend a hand was too strong to resist. Soon there they were, standing on the doorstep of Bernard's home and sharing the idea with him. The poor boy, who finally found a way to make money for his family, was so thankful that he was lost for words. It was not long before the kids started making popcorn, which turned out more challenging than expected. Whenever the thought of giving up emerged, however, they would always recall the man lying sick in bed. After several attempts, a sweet aroma finally filled the air and the popcorn coated in shining golden crust greeted their eyes.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his hew business. It was rather chilly outside.“Popcorn. Delicious popcorn.”
Bernard shouted, pushing his bicycle along the way. In the attempt to arrest more eyes, John and his sisters sang and danced to Bernard's shouts, A bony figure beside a bike, little faces with dazzling smiles, together with the popcorn coated in golden crust, combined to form an unspoiled beauty in such cold weather, By Bernard's optimistic voice, people's constant struggle to recover from the recession was distinctly heard. In a sense, the paper bag filled with popcorn was by nature a mixed bag, containing both laughs and tears, love and loss, tragedy and beauty.

One fall,my wife Elli and I had a single goal:to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world”-the town of Churchill in Manitoba,Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears-like all wild animals-should be photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear,I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner,a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified,Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though-he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way,but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter(相遇),I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn't last through 30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears' eyes, but doesn't hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(吼叫),the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.

A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived.
A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. With greater rage, the bear roared and tried to tear down the fence with all his might. I gathered up my courage and tried to spray him again. Unfortunately, he managed to escape and my heart froze in my chest. At this moment, Elli came up with a crazy idea and threw our garlic bread at the bear. To my great surprise, the bear stopped and bowed down to eat the bread. Seeing this, all of us let out a sigh of relief. Before long, however, the hungry bear finished eating and pushed the fence again. The fence was about to fall down!
At that very moment the helicopter arrived. Shocked by the noises, the bear stopped and turned around. Seeing the people equipped with guns, he ran away and disappeared in the woods as if he knew who they were. We finally got our breath and Elli and I embraced tightly with still racing hearts. After we calmed down, the locals told us that the bears were losing their homes and food because of human activities and climate changes. On the way back home, I checked the precious pictures in the camera, lost in thought. This experience would be remembered, forever.

2020 年 1 月 小狗 Poppy 的陪伴
“I’m going to miss you so much, Poppy,” said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions(情绪) get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it,” he said. “I’ll see you back home in a month, okay ” His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn’t seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn’t.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. “What should we do to cheer Poppy up ” asked Dad. “We’ve tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy,” smiled Mom. “Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let’s get a little dog for Poppy.
It didn’t take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging(摆动)ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

Dad opened the box and a sweet little dog appeared.
A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from university.
Dad opened the box and a sweet little dog appeared. Poppy poked his round head out of the box, and looked around out of curiosity. The sudden arrival of a new friend animated Poppy, who barked excitedly and licked the little dog in rapture. The poppy was a bit numb owing to the unexpected welcome ceremony. “Look! My dear, she loves our new member!” Mom laughed. Soon the puppy got used to his new home, beginning to chase Poppy with great pleasure, or be chased by Poppy delightedly. Parents were exceedingly happy to see poppy become cheerful again.
A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from the university. Upon arrival, he received the rapturous welcome from poppy. “Hey! It’s been a long time, isn’t it ” He chuckled at the dog as he closed the door. Unexpectedly, Poppy abruptly ran away and then dragged another puppy to him. The puppy seemed reluctant when approaching the stranger. “ Poppy was extremely depressed after you left, so we bought her a new friend,”explained Mom to the confused boy. It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. "The day starts at dawn on my farm," he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens. while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a hose ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don’t be late for supper," Uncle Paul cried, "and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!" "OK! " my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his fam house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的)blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark.
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. “What a lovely rabbit!” I shouted with eyes glittering with terrific excitement. It was quite different from those I saw in our city, thus immediately stimulating my interest. Dad was also stunned by this special rabbit, gawking at it motionlessly. “Daddy, let’s catch it as our pet!” I suggested, unexpectedly receiving his prompt agreement. Entirely forgetting what Uncle Paul had told us, we chased after that pretty rabbit, frantic with rapture. Unfortunately, so clever and swift was it that it disappeared in the forest before long. Not until then did we realize that the last ray of twilight was quickly disappearing among the numerous trees and we couldn’t find our track at all! We did get lost!
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. The bone-chilling wind howled fiercely like a wolf, making the darkness even more suffocating. “Dad, what can we do ” I threw my arms around him tightly, quivering and seized by stark horror. “All is going well!” Dad answered in a gentle voice, calm and mollified. We wandered in the scary forest and didn’t know what horrible thing would happen to us, hoping to find the way back. Suddenly, we heard the sound of water rolling down the river. We were over the moon and decided to follow the river. After a while, we heard the familiar sound of sheep and then caught sight of the farm house. The family were waiting for us in the distance. A Vacation with My Mother
I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother---loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them again Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: “You stand outside the door and play lookout(放哨) while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids ” “What ! Oh, Gosh…I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections(反对). If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.
