Ian McKenna was in third grade when he learned that many kids at his Austin school weren’t getting enough to eat at home. He wanted to help, but local volunteer organizations turned him away, saying he was too young. So he decided to find his own solution. For years, he had been gardening with his mother, and they often sent their vegetables to the neighbors. “I’m good at gardening,” says McKenna, now 16. “Why not plant a garden at school, so that kids in need could take food home ”
McKenna persuaded his school to set aside space for a garden; then he asked the community for donations of seeds and equipment. Other students donated their time. Within months, McKenna’s garden was producing lettuces, tomatoes and cucumbers for students and their families. Now,seven years later, McKenna’s Giving Garden project has expanded to five area schools in addition to his own backyard garden. For most of his gardening activities, McKenna wears the same T-shirt in different colors, with his personal motto on it: BE A GOOD HUMAN. To him, that means helping in any way you can, no matter what your age.
“Even a smile might change someone’s life,” he says. “It lets them know that they are important. It can make their day.”
When COVID-19 hit the U. S., McKenna redoubled his efforts, cooking up to 100 meals to distribute (配送) to the hungry on the weekends. When social distancing meant that volunteers couldn’t work on community garden, he started offering online classes and a gardening hotline so families could grow at home. While gardening is his core focus, McKenna says he is always looking for new ways to help the hungry.
4. What caused Ian’s decision to help the kids in his own way
A. Being rejected by volunteer groups. B. Being good at gardening.
C. His school’s support. D. His mother’s suggestions.
5. What do we know about the Giving Garden project
A. It helps students only. B. It was started with many supports.
C. It is funded by schools. D. It earns great profits every year.
6. Which of the following can best describe Ian
A. Well-educated. B. Honest. C. Boring. D. Caring.
7. What is the best title of the passage

For the majority of people around the world, our first serious encounter with literature comes from school. Reading and writing skills have been trained in all of us from an early age and this is set in motion with the start of examinations. Being able to empathise with a group of characters written on a page is an important and necessary skill from a student’s point of view. A Gulf News’ article says, “In an era of modern media, people are misled into thinking that every question or problem has its quick answer or solution. However, literature confirms the real complexity of human experience. ”

At this very moment around the world, athletes are almost naked into freezing cold chambers. Why on earth are they doing this Because it’s supposed to help them feel better.
The treatment is called whole-body cryotherapy. Basketball star LeBron James and soccer great Cristiano Ronaldo have all tried it. The therapy works like this. You take off everything but your underwear. Then you put on warm socks and gloves and step into a chamber that looks sort of like a shower, except your head pokes out the top. Once you’re locked in, air cooled to below-200 F(-129 C) fills the chamber. That’s colder than Antarctica. You stay in for two to three minutes.
Those in favor believe the frigid air helps muscles recover faster and reduces pain. After his first cryotherapy sessions, Phil Mac Kenzie, a professional rugby player, felt noticeably better. He told Scientific American, “I felt refreshed right away. My sleep was better.” Soon, he was using the chamber four times a week. Those who promote cryotherapy make all sorts of wild claims about its benefits. Supposedly, that frigid air can increase focus, improve skin tone, make you happier, burn calories, treat arthritis, slow aging, and much more.
Is there any evidence to back up these incredible claims Nope. Several small scientific studies have looked at whether the therapy can improve muscle recovery after exercise, with encouraging results. But there just isn’t enough evidence to show that the therapy works. The benefits some people experience may just be the placebo effect. That’s when a patient’s expectation that a treatment will work leads to an improvement.
The US Food & Drug Administration has actually issued a warning about whole-body cryotherapy. It cautions that the liquid nitrogen used to cool the chamber may make it difficult to breathe. Frostbite is another potential risk, which is why participants wear gloves and socks. What do you think
12. Why should participants wear socks and gloves
A. To prevent frostbite.
B. To look better.
C. To prevent shyness.
D. To ensure the effect.
13. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word in paragraph 2
A. warm B. hot C. freezing D. relaxing
14. What’s the main idea of paragraph 3
A. The process of the treatment.
B. The benefits of cryotherapy.
C. The working principles of the treatment.
D. Tips taken in account during the treatment.
15. What’s the author’s attitude toward cryotherapy
A. favorable B. positive C. unclear D. doubtful
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文,文章介绍了一种叫做“低温疗法”的治疗手段。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段 “Frostbite is another potential risk, which is why participants wear gloves and socks.(冻伤是另一个潜在风险,这就是为什么参与者要戴手套穿袜子)”可知,戴手套穿袜子是为了防止冻伤。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Those in favor believe the frigid air helps muscles recover faster and reduces pain.(支持者认为,寒冷的空气有助于肌肉更快地恢复,减少疼痛)”及“Supposedly, that frigid air can increase focus, improve skin tone, make you happier, burn calories, treat arthritis, slow aging, and much more.(据说,寒冷的空气可以提高注意力,改善肤色,让你更快乐,燃烧卡路里,治疗关节炎,延缓衰老,等等)”可知,本段主要说明支持者们声称的这种疗法的优点,例如帮助肌肉恢复,减轻疼痛等。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“The benefits some people experience may just be the placebo effect. That’s when a patient’s expectation that a treatment will work leads to an improvement.(一些人体验到的好处可能只是安慰剂效应。这是指患者对治疗有效的期望导致病情的改善)”可知,这种疗法的效果没有确切的证据可以证明,作者对其效果持怀疑态度。故选D项。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My wife called, “Will you come here and make your darling daughter eat her food " I rushed to the scene. My only daughter, Sindu, looked frightened. Her eyes were filled with tears. In front of her was a bowl filled with rice. Sindu particularly hated rice.
“Sindu, darling, why don't you take a few mouthfuls of this " Sindu softened a bit, and wiped her tears with the back of her hands.
“Ok, Dad. If I eat this, will you give me whatever I ask for ” “Oh, sure, darling.” Slowly and painfully, she finished eating the whole bowl. Sindu came to me with her eyes wide with expectation.
“Dad, I want to have my hair shaved off(剃光)this Sunday!”
“Darling, why don't you ask for something else Girls look ugly with a clean-shaven head. We will be sad seeing you with a clean-shaven head.”
“Dad, you saw how difficult it was for me to eat the rice." Sindu was in tears. "And you promised to give me whatever I ask for." My promise must be kept. With her head clean-shaven, Sindu had a round face, and her eyes looked big and beautiful.
On Monday morning, I dropped her at her school. It was a sight to watch my hairless Sindu walking towards her classroom. Just then, a boy shouted from a car, "Sindu, please wait for me!”
What struck me was the hairless head of that boy.
“That boy who is walking along with your daughter is my son Harish.”
Without introducing herself, a lady got out of the car and continued.

Paragraph 2:
That day several students of her class went to school with their heads hairless.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Harish is suffering from leukemia(白血病). He lost all his hair due to the side effects of the treatment. “Never will I have any friends, will I, mom ” he cried desperately. He refused to come back to school for fear of being laugh at. The turning point came with the story that Sindu visited him last week. But what I never imagined was that she would sacrifice her lovely hair for the sake of my son. “What a little angel!” the lady exclaimed, tears welling up her eyes.
That day several students of her class went to school with their heads hairless. Without any embarrassment or hesitation, they talked and laughed as usual, waving morning greetings to others. The cheerful scene infected everyone on the spot, which touched me and left me lost in thought. What was it that encouraged and inspired my little princess who hated rice to overcome her strong personal disgust to do her bits on the way to help others out How was it that the action of kindness went viral “Thanks, honey, my little angel! You are teaching me how selfless real love is.” I whispered to myself, gratefully.

What literature can do is more than helping readers escape from reality. It has gone beyond time and is still with us, placing an important impact on the development of society. So, what connection does literature have with modern society
For the majority of people around the world, our first serious encounter with literature comes from school. Reading and writing skills have been trained in all of us from an early age and this is set in motion with the start of examinations. Being able to empathise with a group of characters written on a page is an important and necessary skill from a student’s point of view. Additionally, the ability to sense themes and messages opens up another way of thinking. All the published books around the world are guides for readers and generate a bridge for them to learn something new.
The impact of literature on modern society is undeniable. Literature acts as a form of expression for each individual author. Some books mirror the society and allow us to better understand the world we live in. For instance, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby is a reflection of his experiences and opinions of America during the 1920s.
We are easily connected to the thoughts of authors through their stories. However, literature also allows us to raise questions and gives us a deeper understanding of issues and situations like human conflict. A Gulf News’ article says, “In an era of modern media, people are misled into thinking that every question or problem has its quick answer or solution. However, literature confirms the real complexity of human experience. ”
Literature is a reflection of human nature and a way for us to understand each other. By listening to the voice of another person we can begin to figure out how that individual thinks. Have we inspired you to learn literature a little more If yes, just do it now!
8. Which word best describe literature’s influence on education
A. Positive. B. Unclear. C. Chief. D. Negative.
9. Why is F. Scott Fitzgerald mentioned
A. To make a summary. B. To make a comparison.
C. To provide an example. D. To propose a definition.
10. What role does literature play in Para. 4
A. It helps build a bridge between people. B. It makes us know more about human nature.
C. It encourages us to voice our opinions clearly. D. It helps us to solve complex issues.
11. What’s the main purpose of this text
A. To introduce the significance of literature.
B. To arouse readers’ interest in learning literature.
C. To explain the necessity of teaching literature in school.
D. To show close relationships between literature and society.
D
A To prevent frostbite.
B. To look better.
C. To prevent shyness.
D. To ensure the effect.
13. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word in paragraph 2
A warm B. hot C. freezing D. relaxing
14. What’s the main idea of paragraph 3
A. The process of the treatment.
B. The benefits of cryotherapy.
C. The working principles of the treatment.
D. Tips taken in account during the treatment.
15. What’s the author’s attitude toward cryotherapy
A. favorable B. positive C. unclear D. doubtful
