The unpredictable nature of disasters is stressful. 1 Here’s what you should do in specific types of disasters.
Hurricane
When a hurricane is approaching, people in its direct path are often all heading in the opposite direction, which means the traffic on the way out can be extreme. 2 If you don’t have a car, make plans to go with friends or family. What’s more, it’s very important to pay attention to all government warnings before and during a hurricane.
Winter storms
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, winter storms create a higher risk of car accidents and several health conditions such as heart disease. 3 Besides, remember to dress warmly, prepare for power outages (断供期), and keep an eye out for signs of serious health conditions. If you have to risk going out, remember to stay warm. 4
Flood
5 Try to bring some water and food with you. If you live in a one-story home, put mattresses (床垫) on top of a dining room table for extra height in case water rushes inside. But be careful about going inside an attic (阁楼). You may find that you don’t have a way back out.
A.So, if you’re going to leave, leave early.
B.That’s why having an action plan in place is so important.
C.To help minimize your risk, you’re advised to stay indoors.
D.Cover as much skin as you can with hats, warm socks, gloves, etc.
E.During a flood, it’s best to go to a high floor, ideally near a window.
F.You can see if your home has a high flood risk through the flood maps.
G.It’s important to ensure that all family members “know the plan inside and out.”
(22-23高一下·江苏扬州·期中)Humans like exploring the world. Throughout history, we have gone to afar- off places to see how people in other areas leave. That urge (欲望) hasn’t disappeared, despite increasing awareness of the carbon footprint associated with travel. Nor should it—there’re great benefits from seeing the broader world. 6 Consider the following tips to reduce your influence when traveling.
● 7
Not only does it save money, but travelers will avoid lines and crowds. And the damage to the sites is less. The climate benefit is real, too. Traveling during this time means better options for direct flights, which are more fuel-efficient. Planes burn up to 25% of their fuel supply when taking off and climbing, so fewer stopovers (中途停留) mean less fuel used.
● Use public transport
Instead of hiring a private vehicle, you can consider using public means of transport. Carrying lots of people, they cut down the carbon emissions (排放) that would otherwise be given out by many private vehicles. 8
● Pack a “Capsule Travel Bag”
The heavier a plane is, the more fuel it requires to fly. Therefore, packing little is one simple way to reduce your impact. 9 Finnair, Finland’s biggest airline, has calculated that if each passenger were to cut down the weight of their luggage by 5 kilograms, the total reduction could save almost 17,000 toms of CO2 emissions.
● Bring your waste-free tools
A zero-waste routine or creating as little waste as possible is also important when you’re away. To often, though, people use as an excuse to let their waste-reduction efforts fail. 10 In order to reduce your impact on the environment, you need to carry reusable items. For instance, carry reusable shopping bags or reusable water bottles.
A.Travel during the off-season.
B.Explore the less well-known destinations.
C.In case you’re doubtful, there’re related statistics to prove it.
D.That is unfair to the locals of whatever place you are visiting.
E.The pressure on the environment could then be reduced greatly.
F.The popularity of traveling by air makes it hard to cut down the carbon footprint.
G.Fortunately, some aspects of travel can be done in ways gentler to the planet.

If there were an award for the funniest company name of 2022, then the 3D printed meat company “Steakholder” would win that award.
Israeli company Steakholder Foods Ltd. has introduced its new product, Omakase Beef Morsels, which are bioprinted with cultured meat. The bites are inspired by the world-famous Wagyu beef, famous for its fat marbling patterns (大理石花纹) in the meat, which is also very expensive.
The company was formed in 2019 and has an office in Israel and Belgium, and is now expanding its operations to the US. 11
Stakeholder uses stem cells from cattle for the production of its printed beef, and the muscle tissue and fat are printed from two separate bio-inks. 12 A bite can be made juicier, chewier, and the taste can also be altered.
13 The cells are selected from animals that will provide the best meat and yield. The next step is proliferation, in which the cells are placed into a nutrient rich reactor to multiply. When the cells reach appropriate numbers, the stem cells change into muscle cells and fat cells. 14
“This product marks a major step forward for us and for the cultured meat industry in general,” said Arik Kaufman, CEO of Steakholder Foods. “It is the result of a lot of hard work and our desire to achieve the highest level of meat possible through bioprinting and cell culture processes.”
15 Its patent for 3D-bioprinting technology is the result of intensive cooperation between its 3D printing engineers and cell biologists. “We see Omakase Beef Morsels as the combination of food, technology and fine art,” Kaufman said. “We want to inspire chefs around the world to create delicious masterpieces and unforgettable dining experiences.”
So there you have it, guilt-free meat eating may be just around the corner.
A.The company has already achieved several milestones since it was founded.
B.Its goal is to create sustainable meat products to replace meats such as beef, chicken and even fish.
C.The layers of meat and fat can be regrouped in different proportions to create different flavor experiences.
D.Additionally, producing meat without having to raise and kill cattle may work out better for ensuring animal welfare and overall health.
E.The meat product is the first of its kind and was created using a specific 3D-bioprinting technology that was recently patented by the company.
F.In the final steps, the muscle cells and fat cells are turned into meat, ready to be processed into the final product, whether it’s a burger, steak, or even a meatloaf.
G.The process works by first selecting the animals to extract (提取) the stem cells from.
(22-23高二下·江苏连云港·期中)It is impossible to have clear communication without clear thinking. How can I give you a clear idea of something if it is not first clear in my own mind However, clear ideas do not guarantee clear communication. I may have a perfectly good idea of what I’m trying to say, but can’t succeed in getting my ideas across clearly and effectively. 16
Don’t think your audience understand your meaning if not making it explicit.
The more complicated the subject matter dealt with, the more important this point is. 17 It is necessary for a correct understanding of the subject we’re speaking on, but in fact the audience may know little about this information.
Don’t treat evaluative statements as if they were statements of objective fact.
“The Pearce Building is on the corner of Main and Adams” is a statement of objective fact, and as such it is either true or false. “The Pearce Building is ugly” is an evaluative statement. 18 . Evaluative statements do not lend themselves to a simple true-or-false response. True statements of objective fact are not open to argument; evaluative statements are.
19

(21-22高二下·江苏南京·期中)American workers are quitting their jobs. A lot of them. So many, in fact, we’re still exactly in the middle of the so-called Great Resignation. In the US, the Labor Department revealed that 4.3 million Americans left their jobs in August 2021, or about 2.9% of the national workforce—the highest number on record. In the UK, the number of open jobs was more than 1 million for the first time ever in August. 26 Poor working conditions, fears of contracting COVID-19 and the sudden understanding of life are among them.
You may have heard the story that in the golden age of American labor, 20th-century workers stayed in one job for 40 years and retired with a gold watch. 27 The truth is that people in the 1960s and 70s quit their jobs more often than they have in the past 20 years. 28 Since the 1980s Americans have quit less, and many have held on to crappy (没有价值的) jobs for fear that the safety net wouldn’t support them while they looked for a new one. But Americans seem to be done with sticking it out. 29 Wages for low-income workers are rising at their fastest rate since the Great Recession. The Great Resignation is, literally, great.
30 That means one in 14 hotel clerks, restaurant servers, and bar backs quit their jobs in a single month. Thanks to several pandemic—relief checks, a rent moratorium (延期付款), and student-loan forgiveness, everybody, particularly if they are young and have a low income, has more freedom to quit jobs they hate and hop to something else.
A.That is true.
B.But that’s a total myth.
C.And the economy was better off for it.
D.And they’re being rewarded for their lack of patience.

How Arts Promote Our Economy
When most people think of the arts, they imagine the end product, the beautiful painting, a wonderful piece of music, or an award-winning performance in the theater. 31 Unfortunately, the economic impact of the arts is often overlooked and badly judged.
The arts create jobs that help develop the economy. Any given performance takes a tour bus full of artists, technical experts, musicians, or writers to create an appealing piece of art. These people can earn a living wage for their professional knowledge and skills. 32 Digital media experts, photographers and advertising agents are hired to sell tickets and promote the event. According to the Dallas Area Cultural Advocacy Coalition, arts agencies employ more than 10,000 people as full-or part-time employees or independent contractors.
33 In 2005, when the Bishop Arts Theatre was donated to our town, the location was considered a poor area of town. After investing more than $1 million in reconstructing the building, we began producing a full season of theater performances, jazz concerts, and year-round arts education programs in 2008.Besides tickets, some jazz lovers nearby will pay their transport fares to and from the events.
Arts contribute to cultural development. 34 When they gather together, they will share their experiences and renew their energy. As-a-result, cultures find the way to exchange, and economy can be advanced. It is wrong to assume arts groups cannot make a profit. If you are a student studying the arts, odds are that you have been ill-advised to have a plan B. 35
A.Another group is needed to help market the event.
B.Above analysis in mind, you needn’t worry about your career and have an alternative plan.
C.The arts boost the development of economy throughout a community despite the side effects.
D.In fact, arts groups bring broader value to our communities, especially in economy
E.A successful arts neighborhood creates a series of effects throughout a community.
F.Artists and audience are all from diverse backgrounds.
G.Culture binds together not only hearts and souls, but the entire society
(21-22高二下·江苏南京·期中)Whether you’re close to home or far away, it’s always a little worrying to drive in a big city. Driving in a sea of cars can be stressful even if you’re an experienced city driver. You probably know this all too well if you live in the state with the worst drivers in America. 36
Take Paris, France, for example. The City of Light is famous for its chaotic roads, including the Champs-Elysees, a famous avenue with no median(中央隔离带), and the “Etoile” , or “star” ,a very large traffic
circle that connects no fewer than 12 separate roads. You’d think stop signs would be a necessity. 37
Paris hasn’t always been a stop-sign-free capital city, though. 38 Just one --- a single red octagon (八角形) reading “STOP” stood at the exit of a construction facility. It was located on the Quai Saint-Exupery, a riverside road in Paris’s 16th district, on the outskirts of the city. 39 Sometime between May 2012 and September 2014, the stop sign disappeared right off the post that held it, and it hasn’t returned. Whether it was an authorized(经批准的) removal or the work of a thief, we can only guess.
There may not be stop signs, but plenty of other signs prevent the Parisian streets from becoming chaotic. 40 There are plenty of “No Left Turn” signs as well, just like the one that stood next to the stop sign. Basically, if you ever find yourself behind the wheel in Paris, make sure you’re driving very carefully.
A.However, the city doesn’t have a single one.
B.This is why road sign are different shapes.
C.But stressful city driving isn’t unique to that state --- or America.
D.According to a Paris police report, the city did have one stop sign at one point.
E.Although this sign was famous, it seemed that no one paid much attention to it.
F.Cars on the right have the right of way, at both regular crossings and in traffic circles.
G.One of the -most common is the red circle, “Do Not Enter”, indicating a-one-way street.
(21-22高二下·江苏南京·期中)I had not hugged a friend or a family member for more than two years until recently when my sister-in-law flew in for a brief visit. For everyone’s safety, we met outside. 41 It’s strange, but only now do I truly realize how much I’ve missed embracing loved ones — the warmth that remains long after our arms have unfolded.
Growing up through war in my hometown of Sarajevo, Bosnia, every moment was full of danger. On one peaceful morning, I had begged my mom to let me go outside after spending weeks wilting (蔫) indoors. She finally agreed. I was outside for only 10 minutes when I was caught in an explosion. I ran to my neighbor’s house for safety and threw my arms around her neck just as my legs collapsed underneath me. She hugged me with both arms and dragged me into her house. 42
Thankfully, I made a full physical recovery, but the emotional scars never left me. Years later there was another explosion near my house. I was safely inside, but my father had left to buy a loaf of bread. He had only just missed the explosion. 43 I was caked in tears as I held him tight.
That same night my parents managed to arrange my escape from our war-torn city. They desperately wanted at least some of my childhood to be normal. I was 16 and came to America on my own. A generous host family took me in and I began learning English and going to school. 44 Over the next several months, I secretly
struggled with feeling homesick and worried about my family back home. Despite managing quite well at school, I couldn’t express my feelings The only way I shared how I felt was by giving Oscar a big hug.
45 For many of us, even hugging a relative or a friend comes with stress and anxiety over risks and precautions (防范). Perhaps we have undervalued the impact of a simple hug. As I look back on my past, I count myself truly lucky to have been held, shielded and encouraged at some of the most key moments of my life by the almost otherworldly (超世俗的) power of a hug. I pray that in the not-so-distant future we can safely hold one another again — a friend, relative, or even a stranger.
A.They had a large dog called Oscar.
B.Thanks to her hug, I survived safe and sound.
C.They were friendly and made me feel at home.
D.I was still in her arms when the ambulance arrived.
E.When he came back inside, I gave him the biggest hug imaginable.
F.Despite the wintry weather, her hug warmed me from the inside out.
G.It is yet another sad aspect of our pandemic lives that hugging a stranger is the last thing on our minds.
(22-23高二下·江苏苏州·期中)Life is filled with regrets. Ask anyone around you what their regrets are and they usually have no difficulty coming up with many items on their “regret list.” 46 .Here are four things that Iregret most not doing in my 20s.
47
I regret not focusing more on where I wanted to go in life, what I wanted to do, who I wanted tobe and what it would take to get there. With some more designing in my twenties, I’d be further ahead in my 40s and perhaps a bit happier as well.
Seizing more experiences
I wish I had lived somewhere else before settling down. 48 .Others have said they regret not pursuing their hobbies or learning to sky dive or mountain climb. I prefer to stay on the ground, but I do regret not learning more, not trying new things that are hard to fit into the life of a fortysomething working wife and mother.

Making more friends
I regret not reaching out more, putting more effort into creating a lot of support that would carry me through
more difficult times. We socialize sure, but many of us don’t put enough importance on building deep and lasting friendships. Some do,but many don’t. 50 !

(22-23高二上·江苏南通·期中)Accompanying and supporting a friend, especially when they are in trouble, can be the difference between them moving through a difficult challenge or sinking into a state of hopelessness, social withdrawal and depression. 51 Here are some practical and genuinely helpful things you can do to support a friend through the hard times.
Reach out.
52 If you’ve noticed your friend has become withdrawn and stopped contacting you or cancelled planned activities, it’s crucial to let them know they’re not alone. Pick up the phone, send them a message on social media, or come to their place and let them know you’re available to chat and you’re concerned about them. 53 Even if it takes a few attempts, most people appreciate knowing that a friend cares about them enough to reach out.
Find a good time to talk.
Choose a time when you’re both feeling reasonably relaxed and don’t have to rush off to other commitments. 54 Avoid trying to talk to them about your concerns during an argument or if they appear upset. It’s important to allow time to bring up your concerns, and leave enough time to discuss anything important that comes up in conversation.
Be a good listener.
It might be tempting (诱人的) to offer your friend advice about how to deal with what they’re experiencing, but the most helpful thing you can do if they choose to open up to you is simply listen. 55 You can ask questions to get a better sense of what they’re feeling, but advice and well-meaning observations are often received as judgement or criticism. Focus on their strengths and coping abilities, and let them know you’re
available whenever they need you.

Everyone has a name and it is said that the name is important for the whole life of the person. 56 There are some factors that should be considered.
Other than the sex difference, the other significant difference of children’s names is between modern and traditional names. 57 It has been used for quite a long time, like George or Elizabeth. A modern name is one that is usually made-up, which seems to be creative or meaningful, like Jayden or Dallas.
58 Many parents need their kids to have traditional names. Picking a traditional name has always been a protected decision for parents, because it is more normal and acknowledged as “would be expected” names. But one of the disadvantages is that traditional names are too normal and usually used by many people. 59
Modern names are more popular now than before. Many parents are making progress towards the uniqueness they want to bring to their kids. However, some parents don’t care for the modern names because they are difficult to pronounce and surprisingly harder to spell. 60 It may take a long time to remember the modern name of a person.
Picking a name for a child is parents’ advantage and duty. Do try to pick a good name for your kid, which will influence him or her greatly.

Art is all around us. It can be found everywhere, including fancy galleries, people’s living rooms, and on the sides of buildings. So, why is art important
It promotes expression and creativity. As humans, we’re naturally drawn to art as a form of expression and communication. 61 It’s a way for them to express themselves before they’re able to speak. In fact, participation in the arts may even assist kids with language, motor skills, and visual learning development.
62 . When someone applies for a job, there are certain skills they need to have like data analysis or bookkeeping. However, many employers also understand the very important need for the skills which are hard to measure and often difficult to define. Some examples include a person’s ability to adapt to change, think creatively, or collaborate with team members.
It provides historical context. 63 . This is why people dedicate their lives to studying cave art, Shakespearean plays, and so much more. When we take the time to dive into art created in the past, we can learn about other generations and eras. We can study art to find out what those before us were facing and how they overcame it. 64 .
In therapy (疗法) settings, art also provides an opportunity for digging deeper and expressing emotions that are difficult to discuss. 65 . In one important study, children between 6 and 12 were asked to draw a house as a distraction after thinking about something upsetting. This group was able to improve their mood when compared with children who were instructed to draw the negative event or simply copy another drawing.

In modern times, most people feel stressed the majority of the time. Our stress comes from work, family, responsibilities, relationships, and the fast pace of life.
71 According to a study, reading just 6 minutes per day can lower pressure by 68%. Researchers analyzed cortisol levels(皮质醇水平) and heart rates of participants before observing how they responded to different tasks. 72
This included listening to music (61%), having a cup of tea or coffee (54%), and taking a walk (42%). They also found that playing video games lowered stress levels by 21%, but increased heart rate.
“Losing yourself in a book is the best relaxation,” Dr. David Lewis, researcher, and neuropsychologist(神经心理学家) said. “ 73 You can escape from the worries and stresses of the everyday world through reading.”
74 If you mostly read the news, you will likely feel even more stressed due to the harmful content. However, if you read about light-hearted positive topics such as how to start a garden or how the planets affect our moods, you will notice a decrease in stress.

Identify your strengths. When it comes to living a life filled with courage, it helps to begin by figuring out what you’re good at as well as where you’ve been successful. 78 Besides, knowing what you’re gifted at helps improve your confidence, which makes it more likely that you’ll take risks and be courageous.

How to be more resilient
We’ve all heard of IQ, and terms like EQ, which relates to your emotional intelligence, are commonly used. But have you heard of AQ 81 . It measures our ability to resist the shocks when life throws curveballs at us-how likely we are to crumble or thrive in these situations. 82 .
Adverse situations can take us by surprise and shock us. In the workplace, it could be in the form of layoff, the company we work for going under or being restructured, or even missing out on a promotion. Failed friendships and relationships, financial hard times and even loss of beloved ones are things that can occur outside of work. 83 . So how can we learn to be more resilient
Luckily, there are some steps you can take to help you be more resilient and adaptable in the face of adversity, according to Dr Shahram Heshmat, professor of health economics at the University of Illinois.
84 . Resilient people often have an aim and are able to concentrate more on a desired outcome, seeing negative situations as a bump in the road on the way to achieving their goal. Learning to relax and regulate your emotions is another key step-one way to help is practising breathing exercises. Likewise, dwelling on things and letting them get to you can cause you to be stressed. So See difficulties more as an opportunity to learn and grow emotionally. 85 . Being able to talk with someone about the challenges we face can help.
A.It can be used to predict our attitudes, perseverance, longevity, and the way we learn from changes in environment.
B.AQ stands for adversity quotient and measures your ability to deal with the ups and downs of life.
C.Finally, make sure you have a good social support network.
D.Being able to handle these rough times is not only important in our personal lives but in our professional lives too.
E.First, try and find a meaningful goal.
F.Things that happen in life are not always pleasant.
G.But, taking a few steps to be more resilient can make them a little easier to get through.
The biggest complaint of the modern world is not having enough time to read. 86 It’s because advance in technology has made reading less interesting.
87 But I often left many novels halfway for lack of time. I decided to take reading seriously. Here are some strategies that actually work even when I have a tight schedule.
Set A Reading Goal.
Having a dedicated reading goal can aid in developing a regular reading practice. Set a simple, attainable, and just slightly challenging goal for yourself. 88 I changed it to “read at least 30 minutes daily” in March. You can create any goal that suits your needs for the month and do your best to stick with it.
Change Your Habits.
Already existing habits are hard to break. If you already have a habit of scrolling (浏览手机) before bed, replace that habit by reading instead. Pick up a book whenever you are tempted to open your phone. Or create
a“cue”(提示)for your mind. 89
Track Your Progress.
I used to put a mark on my calendar whenever I lived up to my reading goal. Witnessing my progress helped me in keeping my morale (士气) up.
I hope this quick little list helps you in getting more quality reading done this year. However, that doesn’t mean you need to read more books. 90
A.Remember to have fun while reading.
B.But there are tremendous benefits of reading.
C.In February, I made the goal of reading at least 10 pages a day.
D.Like everyone else, I hoped to get a ton of reading done in 2021.
E.Even people who are keen readers struggle to make the time to read.
F.I always keep a book on my bedside table to ensure I pick it up before sleeping.
G.Even if you spend just 5 minutes truly enjoying a story, or a poem, you’re doing it right.
Every society has its own special ways of saying things. 91 .It means studying a subject with great effort.
In the United States, most children begin attending school when they are six years old. Public education is free and schooling in these early years is fun. The children learn to read and write. 92 . There is no reason at such an early age for them to hit the books.
93 . The subjects become more difficult. Tests become more common. Pressure is growing to hit the books, study hard and advance.
However, most students in the USA only really begin hitting the books for long hours when they reach high school.
High school students who hope to stop their education at a college or university must take a special national test called the S-A-T. The test has two parts. A high school student who gets a high score on the two parts of the test has a good opportunity to enter a top American college. 94
In China one of the great challenges for students is taking tests every month. 95 . They read all their books carefully, and then read them a second time, and very often a third time. They make sure they know all the material the teacher has offered and prepare for every possible question. They study every night. They are “hitting the books.”
All this adds up to a lot of work, studying, "hitting the books". Knowledge is a prize that is not easy to gain.
A.But they also play games and go on trips.
B.This situation changes as children become older.
C.A student must ensure they are knowledgeable about every material.
D.For this reason, many students hit the books for months to prepare for it.
E.A student hitting the books spends long hours preparing for a test.
F.One popular expression in the United States is “hitting the books”.
G.But they also hit the books when they are young.
Ways to Boost Your Energy
Are you sleepy as the afternoon wears on When low energy drags you down, don’t look to a candy bar, a cup of coffee, or an energy drink for a lift. The sugar and caffeine might give you an immediate pick-me-up, but after that quick high wears off, you’ll crash and feel even more tired. 96 Here are some ways:
Let the sunshine in.
Research suggests that just a few minutes of walking outside on a warm, clear day may enhance mood, memory, and the ability to absorb new information. Going outside can even improve your self-esteem. 97
Chew a piece of sugar-free gum.
It’s not exactly clear why, but numerous studies have shown that chewing gum increases attentiveness. Even before science confirmed it, during World War I, American soldiers were issued gum to help them focus.
98
When you’re stressed, it’s natural to breathe shallowly, which can decrease the amount of oxygen that reaches cells. To counteract that, try breathing in through your nose for four seconds, holding your breath for four seconds, and then slowly breathing out for four seconds.
Have a drink of water.
99 But you do want to drink enough water to keep your body functioning well. Try to get to the fridge or water cooler for a refill every few hours. The walk there will also help you wake up.
Belt out your favorite tune.
Singing gives you a kind of emotional high while it reduces levels of stress in your body. 100 If you’re at work and don’t want to face others’ puzzled stares, you might want to save your beautiful voice for the car.
A.Have a bite.
B.Take a few deep breaths.
C.If you absolutely can’t get out, at least open the shades.
D.So grab a hairbrush, put on your favorite song, and sing away.
E.What you need is a lasting solution to helping you feel refreshed.
F.You don’t necessarily have to follow the “eight glasses a day” rule.
G.Expose yourself to natural sunlight, especially in the early morning.

38.根据上文“Paris hasn’t always been a stop-sign-free capital city, though. (巴黎并非一直是一个没有停车标志的首都。)”可知,在巴黎曾经有一些停车标志,与D项“According to a Paris police report, the city did have one stop sign at one point. (根据巴黎警方的一份报告,该市确实有一个停车标志。)”上下文一致,符合文意,且与下文中“Just one”相呼应,故选D项。

根据前文“It was located on the Quai Saint-Exupery, a riverside road in Paris’s 16th district, on the outskirts of the city. (它位于巴黎郊区的巴黎第16区的河边道路圣埃克苏佩里码头。)”与下文“Sometime between May 2012 and September 2014, the stop sign disappeared right off the post that held it, and it hasn’t returned. Whether it was an authorized(经批准的) removal or the work of a thief, we can only guess. (在2012年5月至2014年9月之间的某个时候,停车标志从支撑它的柱子上消失了,并且再也没有回来。无论是授权(经批准的)移除还是小偷的工作,我们只能猜测。)”可知,位于圣埃克苏佩里码头的这个标志并没有人在意,与E项“Although this sign was famous, it seemed that no one paid much attention to it. (虽然这个标志很有名,但似乎没有人太在意。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选E项。
40.根据前文“There may not be stop signs, but plenty of other signs prevent the Parisian streets from becoming chaotic. (可能没有停车标志,但许多其他标志可以防止巴黎街道变得混乱。)”可知,下文将讲述一些可以防止巴黎街道变得混乱的标志,与G项“One of the -most common is the red circle, “Do Not Enter”, indicating a-one-way street. (最常见的一个是红色圆圈,“请勿进入”,表示单行道。)”上下文一致,符合文意,说明一些防止巴黎街道混乱的标志,故选G项。

41.根据上文“I had not hugged a friend or a family member for more than two years until recently when my sister-in-law flew in for a brief visit. For everyone’s safety, we met outside.(我已经有两年多没有拥抱过朋友或家人了,直到最近我的嫂子飞过来做了一次短暂的拜访。为了大家的安全,我们在外面见面)”以及后文“It’s strange, but only now do I truly realize how much I’ve missed embracing loved ones — the warmth that remains long after our arms have unfolded.(这很
42.根据上文“Growing up through war in my hometown of Sarajevo, Bosnia, every moment was full of danger. She hugged me with both arms and dragged me into her house.(我的家乡是波斯尼亚的萨拉热窝,在战乱中长大,每时每刻都充满了危险。
43.根据上文“Years later there was another explosion near my house. I was safely inside, but my father had left to buy a loaf of bread. He had only just missed the explosion.(几年后,我家附近又发生了一起爆炸。我在屋里很安全,但父亲出去买面包去了。他刚好错过了爆炸)”以及后文“I was caked in tears as I held him tight.(我紧紧地抱着他,泪流满面)”可知,作者拥抱了错过爆炸的父亲,故E选项“当他回到屋里时,我给了他一个大大的拥抱”符合语境,故选E。
44.根据上文“A generous host family took me in and I began learning English and going to school.(一个慷慨的寄宿家庭收留了我,我开始学习英语和上学)”以及后文“Over the next several months, I secretly struggled with feeling homesick and worried about my family back home. Despite managing quite well at school, I couldn’t express my feelings The only way I shared how I felt was by giving Oscar a big hug.(在接下来的几个月里,我暗暗地想家,担心我的家人。尽管我在学校表现得很好,但我无法表达我的感受,我唯一的表达方式就是给奥斯卡一个大大的拥抱)”可知,本句主要说明寄宿家庭的情况,A选项Oscar对应后文Oscar。故A选项“他们有一只大狗叫奥斯卡”符合语境,故选A。
