In another corner of the room were a gas stove and a fridge. Mrs. Jones got up and walked there. She did not watch the boy to see if he was going to run now, nor did she watch her handbag, which she left behind her on the sofa. But the boy was careful to sit on the far side of the room, away from the bag, where he thought she could easily see him out of the corner of her eye if she wanted to. He did not trust the woman to trust him. And he did not trust the woman not to trust him. And he didn’t want anyone to doubt him now.
“Do you need somebody to go to the store,” asked the boy, “maybe to get some milk or something ”
“Don’t believe I do,” said the woman, “unless you just want sweet milk yourself. I’m going to make chocolate milk.”
“That will be fine,” said the boy.
Mrs. Jones heated some cooked food she had in the fridge and set the table. She didn’t ask the boy anything about where he lived, or his parents, or anything else that would embarrass him. Instead, as they ate, she told him about her job in a hotel beauty shop that stayed open late, what the work was like, and how all kinds of women came in and out. Then she cut him half of her cake. “Eat some more, son” she said.
When they finished eating, Mrs. Jones got up and said, “Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes. And, next time, do not make the mistake of stealing my bag nor nobody else’s—because shoes got in this way will burn your feet. I’ve got to get my rest now. But, son, I hope you will behave yourself from now on.
The woman led the way down the hall to the front door and opened it. “Good night! Behave yourself, boy!” she said, looking into the street as he went down the steps.
The boy wanted to say something other than “Thank you, ma’am” to Mrs. Jones, but although his mouth moved, he couldn’t even say that, as he turned at the front of the steps and looked up at the large woman in the door. Then Mrs. Jones shut the door. And the boy never saw her again.
29. Why was the boy careful to sit on the far side of the room, away from the bag

How do plants grow in space An experiment at the Tiangong space station can provide the answer. Chinese astronauts have successfully grown rice seedlings(幼苗), which may show us how astronauts can cultivate food to support long-term space flights.
“The rice seedlings are growing very well.” Zheng Huiqiong, a scientist at the Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told China Daily. Since the rice experiment began on July 29, 2022, the seedlings of the tall shoot rice variety(高杆水稻品种)have reached a height of about 30 centimeters. Plus, the seedlings of the dwarf rice variety(矮秆水稻品种)have grown to around 5 centimeters.
While there have been other rice experiments in space, the one being conducted on Tiangong is the first of its kind. It aims to produce the complete life cycle of the plant, which begins with a seed and ends with a grown plant producing new seeds.
The astronauts will keep studying the plants. If the experiment is successful, they will collect the newly produced seeds and bring them back to Earth for further studies, Zheng added.
Since the 1980s, China has been taking the seeds of crops to space. But growing rice in orbit is a different challenge due to the hard conditions in space. Micro-gravity, no air and high-energy cosmic rays may make it hard for the plants to grow.
Rice has been the most important food for astronauts for a long time. US astronauts on the Apollo 11 mission—the first humans to land on the moon in July 1969—ate freeze-dried chicken and rice during their trip to space.
If such an experiment goes well, astronauts will be able to grow their food in orbit, reducing how much food has to be taken on space flights.
33. What does “cultivate” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. find B. grow C. waste D. cook
34. What is the purpose of describing the heights of the rice varieties in Paragraph 2
A. To tell us about the scientists’ work.
B. To make us interested in space exploration.
C. To show the rice experiment is going well.
D. To introduce different types of rice seedlings.
35. What is special about the rice experiment being done on Tiangong
A. It’s the first rice experiment in space.
B. The gravity on Earth will influence the growing of the rice.
C. It’s the first experiment to try to produce rice in a complete life cycle.
D. If it works, the newly produced rice plant will be brought back to Earth.
36. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about
A. Future space missions. B. The importance of the rice experiment.
C. The best food choices for astronauts. D. Changes in astronauts’ food through history

China plans to send one to three network backup satellites for the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) into space this year to improve the stability(稳定性)and usability of the constellation(星座), according to the 13th China Satellite Navigation Conference on Thursday, April 27, 2023.
Beidou is a positioning system developed by China. China is the third country in the world to have its own positioning system. With Beidou, China no longer has to depend on foreign systems. This is very important for national safety. Work on Beidou began in 1994. However, the first two Beidou satellites, were not sent into space until 2000. At present, it has 45 satellites in orbit, including 15 for BDS-2 and 30 for BDS-3. These satellites have formed a global network.
The complete Beidou will be more powerful than any other positioning system being used all over the world. Yang Changfeng is a designer of Beidou. He says that the system can notice the sway(摇摆)of a building in strong winds. Beidou has brought many advantages in our lives. Let’s take Shanghai as an example. Thousands of buses have been using Beidou. When we are waiting for a bus, we can know when it is about to come. Many smart phones have been using Beidou as well. Many people say, “Let me turn on my GPS.” “In fact, their phones are using Beidou.” jokes a salesperson in Beijing.
China will speed up the integration(融合)of BDS with new technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence and big data. It aims to build a more common, integrated, and intelligent national system of space and time by 2035.
The 3-day conference kicked off Wednesday in Beijing. More than 4, 000 experts and scholars from home and abroad in the satellite navigation field attended the conference online and offline.

Ten years ago, many people thought that the age of physical books was coming to an end. The objects that had been the companions of millions of readers for hundreds of years were about to disappear. Soon, we’d all be reading on little electronic screens and laughing at the memory of places called “libraries” and “bookshops”.
41 At least in the UK, as The Guardian noted, sales of e-books are falling while sales of physical books are rising. More surprisingly, it’s young people who are buying the most physical books. More than 60 percent of 16-to-24-year-olds preferred print books to e-books. The most popular reason given was “I like to hold the product.”
Books become very personal objects to lovers of reading. It often starts with the way they get them. 42 And we carry books around with us everywhere.
If there’s a mark made on the pages from coffee or food, it doesn’t matter. 43 It’s as if readers of physical books make friends with their books.
Of course, some could say that the devices on which people read e-books, like Kindles and iPads are also objects that we like. But it isn’t quite the same. A Kindle can hold as many pieces of writing as a whole library. 44
Physical books are as valuable to some readers as photographs of family members. This “friendship” people develop with books isn’t just about feelings. Research has shown that readers remember more information read from physical books than electronic ones.
However, there’s no doubt e-books are here to stay. 45 But it’s also certain that physical books, which have been in production since the fifteenth century, are here to stay, too.
A. They aren’t simply a “here today, gone tomorrow” thing.
B. These accidents make the book—our book—even more personal.
C. However, it seems not true about the idea of the death of the physical books.
D. Many buyers of books like to write down their names on the inside cover when they’ve bought one.
E. But a story we remember from our time turning its real pages in our favourite armchair remains in our memory forever.
