I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal(麦片)and eggs. When others had sugary drinks and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. But at least I wasn't alone. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.
My mother knew where we were at all times. She knew who our friends were. We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath every day. We had to be in bed by 9:00 pm and up at 7:00 am. We couldn't sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept, our mother gave us work to do. We had to wash dishes, make our beds and learn to cook. I believe she lay awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.
Through the years, things didn't improve a bit. We could not lie in bed “sick” like our friends did in order to miss school.
My mother was the meanest mother. Out of four children, a couple of us went on to higher education. None of us have ever done bad things. She pushed us to grow up into educated and honest people. Now I am trying to raise my children like this too. I will feel proud when my children call me mean mother. Because, you see, I am thankful that I had the meanest mother in the world.

British people often feel embarrassed about replying to offers with the word “no”.It feels impolite for them , especially when speaking to strangers. This can be very confusing(不解的)for people from other countries, especially if they are not fluent(流利的) English speakers.
One of the first things you learn when you start studying English is how to answer if somebody offers you something. “Yes,please”and“No,thank you”are probably the best-known phrases in the language. Yet British people often say, “I'm all right, thanks” when you offer them something. When they say this, they mean that they have already got everything that they need and don't need anything else. This is a way to say no without being impolite. However, British people often say “all right” when they want to say yes to an offer. The same word can be used in different ways to say both yes and no, and sometimes differences in pronunciation are the only clues(线索)to understanding.
Mandy is an assistant in a shop selling gifts and tours to tourists. “It's very difficult to understand what British customers want," she says. “I ask them if they want to buy something and they tell me that they are all right. Often when I ask if they want to go on a tour, they say, ‘Maybe later’, but really they don't want it and may never come back to the shop.”
“Even when they want to say yes, it's confusing,” says Mandy. “They say,‘Sure’ or‘Why not ’instead. Why can't British people just say what they mean It's so confusing!”
( )29.Why don't the British people like saying no
A. They don't like to speak to strangers.
B. Saying no is confusing for them to express their ideas.
C. They don't think it's polite to say no.
D. They are not good at English.
( )30. When British people want to accept an offer, they may probably reply__.
A. “Why not ” B. I'm all right, thanks. C. Maybe later. D. No, thanks.
( )31. What is the purpose of giving the example of Mandy
A. Because Mandy is just like a typical British woman.
B. To show how confusing it is to understand British people's ways of saying yes or no.
C. To express how important it is to be a fluent English speaker.
D. To show better communication is necessary to understand each other.

To express his thanks for saving his life,Mr King gave Bill $5,000 together with a letter. Mr King told Bill that a man like him should be fired(开除). Bill was surprised and asked, “Why I saved you!” Mr King said,“Go home and read the letter, and you will find out the reason,"
Bill went home and opened the letter in a hurry. After he read it, he became sad. In the letter, there was only one sentence. But it was enough for him to know why he was fired. “A night watchman can't sleep when working, but you did.”

Although warming weather is making trouble for cacao planting, we'll still have it in the near future. The world is trying to do what it can to save chocolate. Scientists are working to make the cacao plants strong against illnesses by using gene editing(基因编辑) to change the DNA of cacao.

This includes drinking tea with a snack around 4 pm to avoid feeling hungry between lunch and dinner. It is a tradition that is still going today but has become less popular in recent times.
In the late 1800s, the price of tea dropped a lot as more tea began to arrive on ships from India and China. It was no longer a drink just for rich people. Nowadays, teenagers have different ways for fun from the past.
In the past, teenagers used to choose games that they could play outdoors together with their friends or family. They would climb mountains or play balls with classmates on weekends. These activities were good for their health and could make them happy when they played in the nature.
However, teenagers these days like to stay alone at home most of the time. They play computer games or chat with friends on the phone. Although there are so many kinds of computer games, they still feel lonely. What's more, these activities are bad for their eyes and health.
I hope we teenagers can put down our phones and go outdoors to spend more time with our friends or family. This is really important and meaningful.
