Continuation Writing
How to make the writing coherent and more coherent
Lead-in
Talk about how to better a continuation writing. Learn the criteria of scoring a continuation writing.
Listen and Recall the Story
Students listen to a record of the story.
Students recall the key story elements.
Plan for Writing
Students answer the questions and figure out how the continued part should echo the given part in order to be coherent.
1. What will happen in the end
Tip 1: Follow the “Conflict→Solution” pattern.
2. What message does the story convey (theme)
Tip 2: Base the main theme on the root of the conflict.
3. How will I make sales promotion and overcome my shyness
Is it easy What makes the selling process so hard What makes my selling successful
How will the neighbors react first
What will make the neighbors buy the products
Tip 3: Make the writing specific and realistic.
Practice
Students observe 3 samples of writings and find out whether they are reasonable. If not, tell the reason and how to improve them.
Group Work
Students exchange their writings with group members, and give comments and improvements, using the checklist below.
Writing Checklist
□ The writing follows the “Conflict→Solution” pattern. (At the end, “I" earned enough money to buy presents and was not shy.). □ The writing bases the main theme on the root of the conflict. (The writing takes courage and determination as the theme). □ The writing is specific and realistic. (“My” selling process and the neighbors’ reaction are specific and realistic.)
