I opened my car window and called out “Ma’am! Ma’am!” The only lady in the parking lot looked around until she saw me. “I just wanted to tell how nice you look today,” I said. “The colors you have on are beautiful on you.” Her face registered surprise for a second, and then she smiled. “Thank you!” she called back. Her final steps to her car seemed lighter, and I smiled to myself.
I grew up with very few cheerleaders in my own life. When I was in the middle of fighting a battle for my life, I had been confirmed depression, along with anxiety. It has taken many years and more effort and determination than I thought I was capable of recovering from this illness. With no cheerleaders in my court, I fought this battle alone. I am proud of the progress I have made thus far. There are times when I thought, if only I had had someone to hold me and say, “Susan, I believe in you. You can do this, and I’ll be there every step of the way.” I wonder how much sooner I would have recovered. I’ll never know.
So I have made it a point in recent years to praise people, especially women and girls. Instead of just thinking that someone looks nice or did a great job, I say it out loud. It doesn’t take long, and it’s easy. So, I wonder, why don’t more people do this As women, we have learned from our role models to be quiet. We downplay our own achievements even when we do receive a rare compliment. Now, when I compliment someone and she denies, I say to her, “Just say thank you.”
Most women are relieved that they don’t have to deny the compliment; they can accept the praise without guilt.
Cheerleading doesn’t require any skills. It only takes a few seconds, although you do have to remind yourself to do it. Eventually, it becomes a habit.

27.Which of the following best describes the author
A.Caring. B.Brave. C.Outgoing. D.Honest.

Under normal circumstances, falling asleep during a paid tour is a waste of money or an offense to your guide at worst. But that’s not the case with this new experience coming out of Hong Kong. As its name suggests, the Sleeping Bus Tour is designed to help passengers catch some sleep, and rides are already selling out.
A 2022 survey by the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Center of Communication and Public Opinion notes almost 70% respondents experiences some form of sleep disorder. Hong Kongers have much stress from work and need a space for sleeping, but their living spaces are too small. Some may not live alone and have to share apartments with their family, which may not be a good environment for a proper rest.
After noticing passengers falling asleep on their buses, the Hong Kong tour company, Ulu Travel Agency, recently launched such an innovative way for adults to sleep: the Sleeping Bus Tour. The five-hour bus ride takes passengers on an 83-kilometer(about 51.5miles) journey aboard a regular double decker bus. Not only is the Sleeping Bus Tour the first of its kind, it’s also the longest bus route in Hong Kong, ensuring that tired passengers have plenty of time to enjoy some sleep.
Once passengers board the bus, they are treated with a goodie bag complete with an eye mask and earplugs to help them sleep and they are allowed to bring their own blankets and slippers. The long ride includes a few stops for scenic spots and bathroom breaks. Passengers can also get off the bus early at one of several drop-off points if they’d prefer to continue their sleep at home rather than complete the entire journey. Tickets for the Sleeping Bus Tour are divided in four categories from the “Zero-decibel(分贝) Sleeping Cabin” to the “VIP Cabin.” Prices range from about $17 USD to S115USD per person. For more information on this unique experience, head to the Ulu travel company website.

Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly connected groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to becoming farmers, and their languages became more settled and fewer in number, too. In recent centuries, trade, industrialization, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory(强制的) education, especially globalization and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.
At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution(分布) of these languages is hugely uneven(不均衡). The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 languages; the America about 1,000; Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800.The media n number(中位数)of speakers is a me re 6,000, which means that half the world’s languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages and close to disappear, with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon(eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico(150), Lipan Apache in the United States (two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia(one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.
32.What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times
A.They developed very fast. B.They were large in number.
C.They had similar patterns. D.They were closely connected.
33.Which of the following best explains “dominant” underlined in Paragraph 2
A.Difficult. B.Advanced. C.Powerful D.Modern.
34.How many languages are spoken by less than 6,000 people at present
A.About 6,800. B.About 3,400. C.About 2,400. D.About 1,200.
35.What is the main idea of the text
A.New languages will be created.
B.People’s lifestyles are reflected in languages.
C.Human development results in fewer languages.
D.Geography determines language evolution.

Jenny lived in a small village. When she was a child, what she liked to do most was watch the blue sky and enjoy birds flying freely in the sky. She always imagined that some day she could also fly in the sky like a bird.
When Jane was in the fourth grade, one day, her teacher asked them to write a report on what they wanted to be when they grew up. She poured her heart into her report and wrote that she dreamed to become an airline pilot in the future. She thought that she did a great job because she expressed her real idea successfully. However, to her surprise, her paper came back with an “F” on it. The teacher told her it was nothing but a “fairy tale”, which could never become true. Jenny felt completely disappointed and sad. In her heart, she didn’t want to accept that a girl couldn’t become a pilot. But as the years went by, Jenny was beaten down by the discouragement again and again from people around her. “Girls can’t become airline pilots; never have, never will. You’re crazy.” Finally, Jenny gave up her dream.
However, when Jenny studied in her senior year of high school, she met an English teacher called Marsha, who was a strict teacher with high standards but very kind. She often inspired her students to do something meaningful in the future. One day, Mrs. Marsha asked all the students to think about the question: “What will you do in the future ” At that time, Jenny hesitated for a while She was worried that she would be laughed at again.
