Physical and Mental Health
It’s very important for us to keep healthy physically and mentally because we can’t do anything without health. Firstly, I recommend that we have a balanced diet which can give us more energy to study. Secondly, take regular exercise and take part in extracurricular activities suitable for us, which can help us keep fit and release stress. Thirdly, be positive about whatever happens. If so, we will find more friends to share joys and sorrows with. With proper food, regular exercise and a positive attitude, I’m sure we will become happier and more relaxed.
读后续写:
The next day witnessed Jack getting down to work. With a heavy heart, he wrote an article about the terrible condition of the park and the unfortunate incident involving Robin. Pouring his heart into the words, he appealed to the community to help restore the old park. Never before had he felt that words could be so powerful. Later that day, Jack handed the article to Mrs. Ford, who appreciated his deep concern for the park and managed to put the article on local news.
As the article spread, offers of help poured in. People went out of their way to donate materials and help fix the broken facilities. Jack’s classmates were impressed by the changes taking place in the park, astonished that his effort could make such a significant difference. Once labeled a “nerd”, Jack was now admired as a source of inspiration. Seeing the old park transformed into an inviting place, Jack was glad he hadn’t quit writing. It turned out that writing could be put to practical use.

W: I support it. The part they are building now looks good, but it will cost far too much.
M: I read somewhere that China might be asked to build the second part.
W: That is a great idea. Look at the wonderful railways they have.
M: The Chinese say they could build the line at a much lower price.
W: I’m sure they could. I bet they would do it quicker as well.
M: I agree. Did you see the story about the hospital they built in a short time That was amazing!
W: Projects in Britain always take so long. Planning takes years, and building takes years. People just want to be able to use it.
M: I know. We could learn a lot from the Chinese. It wouldn’t worry me if they took over the railway job.
W: The only problem is the distance. China is a long way away.
M: They do projects all over the world. Look at the Belt and Road. That won’t be a problem.
W: Let’s hope they do it then.
Text 10
Today, I’m going to talk about what one community is doing to save energy at present. The people of Davis, California have succeeded in cutting their energy consumption by one-third since 1973. All new houses in Davis must make sure that the heat will not escape unnecessarily during the winter. New houses must also face north or south so that they will not be overheated by the sun in summer. The laws have had a definite effect. Since 1976, there has been a 50% decrease in the amount of natural gas and electricity used for heating and air-conditioning. There are other energy-saving features about Davis, too. Public buses transport university students throughout the area. There are 24 miles of bicycle paths. And today, there are twice as many bicycles as cars in the city. By reducing the number of available parking spaces, the City Council has succeeded in reducing the number of cars in the city every day. Another benefit of the reduced parking is the greater number of small cars. With the intention of saving gas, people are choosing not to drive or driving economical cars instead. Davis has become an energy-saving model for other cities. Well, time is up for today. Next week, we’ll return to our regular topic of national energy alternatives.2024届黑龙江省牡丹江市普通高中协同发展共同体高三下学期第一次模拟

I used to believe that only words could catch the essence of the human soul. The literary works contained such distinct stories that they shaped the way we saw the world. Words were what composed the questions we sought to uncover and the answers to those questions themselves. Words were everything.
That belief changed.
In an ordinary math class, my teacher posed a simple question: What's 0. 99 rounded to the nearest whole number Easy. When rounded to the nearest whole number, 0. 99 =1. Somehow, I thought even though 0. 99 is only 0. 01 away from 1, there's still a 0. 01 difference. That means even if two things are only a little different, they are still different, so doesn't that make them completely different
My teacher answered my question by presenting another equation (等式): 1= 0. 9, which could also be expressed as 1=0. 99999… repeating itself without ever ending.
There was something mysterious but fascinating about the equation. The left side was unchangeable, objective: it contained a number that ended. On the right was something endless, number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, somehow, these two opposed things were connected by an equal sign.
Lying in bed, I thought about how much the equation paralleled our existence. The left side of the equation represents that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so clear. The concrete, whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you would die. But then there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full of limitless possibilities, and endless opportunities into the open future.
So that's what life is. Objective but imaginative. Unchangeable but limitless. Life is an equation with two sides that balances itself out. Still, we can't ever truly seem to put the perfect words to it. So possibly numbers can express ideas as equally well as words can. For now, let's leave it at that: 1= 0. 99999. . . and live a life like it.
24. What does the author emphasize about words in paragraph 1
A. Their wide variety. B. Their literary origins.
C. Their expressive power. D. Their distinct sounds.
25. What made the author find the equation fascinating
A. The repetition of a number. B. The difference between the two numbers.
C. The question the teacher raised. D. The way two different numbers are equal.
26. Which of the following can replace the underlined word "paralleled" in paragraph 6
A. Measured. B. Composed. C. Mirrored. D. Influenced.
27. What does the author think of “1= 0. 9”
A. They reveal the meaning of life. B. They are reliable in expressing ideas.
C. They are useful in learning maths. D. They give limited possibilities.
C
Digital mindfulness(正念) is the application of mindfulness practices in your digital life. According to Jon Kabat Zinn, a professor at the University of Massachusetts Medicine School, mindfulness is “a means of paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and non judgmentally”. Here two main key points are emphasized when it comes to mindfulness as a practice in your digital life.
The first point is that you must learn to do things on purpose. For instance, you use your phone as a habitual escape from boredom or stress, which is thought by many as a quick solution to all those negative feelings. But what if you get only negative responses from your phone—the news or posts are negative Instead of finding peace, you find more boredom and more stress. The solution that mindfulness provides is a purposeful and intentional choice. Therefore, you are empowered to choose how to respond to the stimulus(刺激) behind such feelings as boredom, loneliness, and stress and not just treat the symptoms.
The other key is going through the experience non judgmentally. When you feel sad or angry because of a post on social media, all you ever do is to go through the experience and let it flow. At its core, mindfulness involves the acceptance of your memories, feelings, and thoughts and minuses any judgment on yourself or others because of those things. These feelings, memories, and experiences come and go. After they have passed, you are still you and in control. You will become more aware of your inner world. It's this internal monologue(独白) that pushes you to grab your digital technology (phone, Alexa speaker, TV, etc.).
Digital mindfulness is not about avoiding the negative things in life. Through mindfulness practice, you regain the power to learn from these experiences and healthily deal with the negative. Mindfulness will also teach you to be aware of all your emotions, so you learn to deal with the things that you used to avoid. Finally, digital mindfulness brings you peace of mind in an ever changing and increasingly connected world.
Now, I would rather prefer to think of it as one of many tools that we can use in our daily life.
28. What does the author suggest readers do when they feel stressed in their digital life
A. Find something interesting to do. B. Use the phone as a habitual escape.
C. Keep away from the negative responses. D. Deal with the root cause of the problem.
29. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. Negative feelings should be avoided or controlled.
B. Mindfulness involves both acceptance and judgment.
C. Mindfulness helps us fully experience life as it happens.
D. Digital technology is the key to understanding our inner world.
30. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. How Can You Avoid Negative Feelings B. The Definition of Digital Mindfulness.
C. How Can Digital Mindfulness Benefit You D. Digital Mindfulness: One of Tools Used in Our Daily Life.
31. What will probably be discussed in the next paragraph
A. Applications of mindfulness in communication. B. Ways of practising mindfulness in the digital age.
C. Development of mindfulness in medical field. D. Benefits of practising digital mindfulness in daily life.
D
Geothermal (地热的) power generation is one of our most stable renewable energy resources. Heat generated below the Earth’s surface can provide an almost unlimited supply to power and heat homes. And while geothermal electricity only accounts for around one percent of global generation, that is set to at least triple by 2050.
The Geysers in California is the world’s largest geothermal electricity complex. It produces enough electricity from its 18 power plants for 725,000 homes, totaling 20 percent of the state’s renewable energy. Superheated “dry steam” is channeled from a large sandstone reservoir heated by a large magma chamber (岩浆房) more than four miles beneath the surface.
Heat is captured from its passage through the rock and the heated water converts into electricity. Cooled water is then recycled and pumped back to gather more heat. EGS (enhanced geothermal systems) technologies will open up many more sites for geothermal energy. “You can effectively put a power plant anywhere,” said Will Pettit, director of the Geothermal Resources Council. “All you have to do is drill deep enough and you will find hot rock.”
Most geothermal plants actually use a flash steam technique, where hot water (at 360F or 180C) is drawn up, passed into lower pressure tanks and flashed into steam to power a turbine (涡轮机). Binary cycle (双元循环) plants are the growth technology because they can operate at lower water temperatures and more diverse geographical locations. They use moderately hot water to heat a secondary fluid with a lower boiling point—as low as 135F—to drive turbines.
Geothermal plants already emit 11 times less carbon dioxide per unit of electricity than the average US coal power plant. They can also operate 24 hours a day to provide a solid base load for homes and businesses.
There are drawbacks too. Seismic activity around drilling wells is a factor. High investment costs are another. But the US government is backing the sector with multi-million dollar funds to push forward advanced EGS research. Geothermal energy is set to play a big part in the low-carbon electricity future.
32. What is the significance of EGS (enhanced geothermal systems) technologies
A. They have made geothermal energy less sustainable.
B. They have greatly reduced the need for drilling in geothermal sites.
C. They allow for more efficient use of geothermal resources.
D. They have opened up new methods of generating electricity from water.
33. What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A. Power plants are not affected by water. B. Hot water is used to power a turbine directly.
C. Binary cycle plants are less restricted to sites. D. A flash steam technique is a must in geothermal plants.
34. What does the author think of geothermal power
A. Perfect. B. limited . C. impractical. D. promising.
35. What is the main idea of the article
A. Businesses have been competing to gain an advantage in geothermal power.
B. Geothermal power is likely to be a great chance to sustainable power.
C. Traditional power has been replaced by geothermal power in America.
D. EGS technologies have come into widespread application around the world.

Five nutrition myths and what health experts want you to know instead
MYTH 1: Fresh fruits and vegetables are always healthier than canned, frozen or dried varieties.
Research has found that frozen, canned and dried fruits and vegetables can be just as nutritious as their fresh counterparts. 36 However, some canned, frozen and dried varieties contain added sugars, saturated fats and sodium, so be sure to read nutrition labels, especially on prepared foods.
MYTH 2: 37
By the 1980s, doctors, government health experts, the food industry and the media were reporting that a low-fat diet could benefit everyone. As a result, many people replaced calories from fat with calories from refined carbohydrates such as white flour and added sugar. In reality, healthy fats help reduce your risk. Examples of those include monounsaturated fats (found in olive oil, avocados and certain nuts and seeds) and polyunsaturated fats (found in sunflower oil, walnuts, fish and flaxseed).
MYTH 3: “Calories in, calories out” is the most important factor for maintaining weight.
It’s true that if you burn more calories than you consume, you will probably lose weight. 38 Rather, it’s the types of foods we eat that may be the long-term drivers of those conditions. Ultra-processed foods can lead to weight gain.
MYTH 4: Plant beverages are healthier than dairy milk.
While the nutrition of plant-based beverages can vary, many have more added ingredients which can contribute to poor health than cow’s milk. 39 Almond (杏仁) beverage on the other hand, typically has one or two grams in the same amount.
MYTH 5: Potatoes are bad for you.
Potatoes have often been vilified in the nutrition community because of their high glycemic index, which can spike your blood sugar. However, potatoes are rich in vitamin C, potassium, fibre and other nutrients, especially when consumed with the skin on. 40
A. All fat is bad.
B. All fat is not beneficial.
C. The reason for this is that they are rapidly digested.
D. They are also inexpensive and available year-round in grocery stores.
E. Typically, cow’s milk has about eight grams of protein per 250 millilitres.
F. They can be an easy way to make sure there are always fruits and vegetables available at home.
G. But research does not suggest that eating more will result in becoming overweight or obese.

Jack found himself at a crossroads. Although Mrs. Ford, his head teacher, appreciated his stories, the label of “nerd” (呆子) from his classmates cast a shadow over his passion for writing. Discouraged and feeling that his writing served no purpose in the eyes of others, he thought about giving it up.
One day, during recess (课间), as Jack was absentmindedly taking down some random events of the day, he heard an anxious voice calling out for help. He put down his pen, glanced out the window, and saw a gathering of people near the playground fence. With concern, he walked over and joined the crowd.
In the centre of the crowd was Robin, a sporty boy in the class, who was injured on the knee and bleeding heavily. Robin was playing kickball when the ball unexpectedly shot over the playground fence, landing in the old park next to the school. As he ran to get the ball, he tripped over the overgrown weeds, his left knee crashing into a broken bench. Robin’s face paled, perhaps from both pain of the bleeding knee and his panic. Concerned classmates surrounded him, and Mrs. Ford hurried to the scene, providing some initial care before sending him to see the doctor.
Amidst the lively discussion of the crowd, Jack absorbed the information that the park had been abandoned for ages. Turning his attention to the park, he was astonished at its awful state. Overrun with weeds, broken benches, rusty sports facilities, and scattered rubbish, the park was practically a dangerous place for students.
