I knew it was going to be a bad fireworks season this year when I saw so many different tents selling them to the public. I was right. The bangs and booms (噼啪声) started before the first of January and lasted way past the fourth. I have never been a big fan of fireworks since I was a boy. It was then that a local fair set off a huge show near our house and I saw how the noise terrified our dogs. I sat on the floor with them during the whole show, holding their shaking bodies.
I know a lot of people enjoy the colorful light shows the fireworks can put on at times. They can be bright and beautiful. Still, I find that I prefer the gentler lights of summer to these noisy ones. I love seeing the moon rising above the hills in the evening. Its gentle, smiling face always reminds me that someone loves me and is watching over me from above.
The shinning stars also always look so heavenly and wonderful when you take the time to look up into the skies and watch them shine. I also love the beautiful, blinking (眨眼的) lights of the fireflies this time of the year. Seeing their lovely, little lights as they fly around always fills my heart with light and delight as well. It warms my soul and reminds me of what a perfect world we live in.
I think we all might do better to grow the gentler lights within ourselves. Our society seems to praise
and admire those who come off as booming and brash
24.Why does the author mention his childhood’s experience
A.To share an old story.
B.To explain his tiredness of fireworks.
C.To stress a joyful atmosphere with fireworks.
D.To remind us of the danger of fireworks.
25.Why does the author prefer lights like the moonlight
A.Because they are bright, and beautiful.
B.Because they give him pleasant feelings.
C.Because they don’t scare his dogs any more.
D.Because they keep him free from being monitored.
26.How does the author feel when seeing the fireflies
A.Grateful. B.Joyful. C.Determined. D.Beloved.
27.What would the author write about in the following paragraph
A.Why gentler lights are better than noisy ones.
B.What gentler lights will really bring to our life.
C.How we can make the world a gentler place.
D.When we can stop great noises such as fireworks.

More than 80 percent of global heat is absorbed by the ocean, which has a massive capacity to store and give off heat. High sea-surface temperatures are causing long-term damage to coral reefs (珊瑚礁). Corals are dying. The IPCC (政府间气候变化专门委员会) projects that up to 90 percent of coral reefs could disappear if global warming reaches 1.5℃. Another reason corals are in trouble is because of ocean acidification. Higher carbon dioxide levels have shift ed the chemistry of the ocean, making it more acidic, and corals and sea creatures have trouble growing in acidic conditions.
When ocean water warms, it expands in volume. This is a major cause of the rise in sea levels, along with the water added to the ocean by the melting of land-based glaciers (冰川). The sea level has risen by an average of 20 centimeters since the late 19th century, and the research by scientists studying the last 25
years of satellite data found that the ocean water is rising faster and faster. If it continues at its current rate, the rise in sea level by 2100 will be more than double the current estimates. Sea level rise leads to the destruction of coastal wetlands, flooding and damage to water ecosystems.
Temperature and precipitation (沉淀) are key elements of climate. A warmer climate means that more water rises from both the land and ocean, and a warmer atmosphere holds more of that water. Scientists have noticed that there are more heavy rainfall events. Additionally, higher water temperature in streams, lakes, and rivers lead to lower levels of dissolved oxygen in the water, which impacts the survival and populations of fish and other sea life.
Especially troubling are the extreme weather events that are happening more often around the world. Hurricanes are ramping up in intensity, particularly in North Atlantic. The year 2017 was a busy one for Atlantic hurricanes. Meanwhile, in the western United States, the state of California has had record-setting drought conditions, which began in 2012.
28.What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 1
A.Global warming has little damage to the land.
B.Ocean acidification affects the sea temperature.
C.Coral reefs are in danger of disappearing.
D.Corals and sea creatures need critical surroundings.
29.What can be known from Paragraph 2
A.Sea level rise has positive effect on sea animals.
B.By 2100 the sea level will rise 20 centimeters.
C.Global heating is the direct cause of wetlands destruction.
D.The rise of sea level is beyond our imagination.
30.What does the underlined part “ramping up” in last paragraph mean
A.Increasing. B.Failing. C.Appearing. D.Changing.
31.Which is the suitable title for the text
A.High Sea-surface Temperatures to Creatures B.Global Warming, What Damages It Causes
C.Ways to Stop High Sea-surface Temperatures D.Extreme Weather Events and Global Warming

About ten years ago, logging into Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram would mostly show posts from friends and family in the order they were posted. Today, these platforms present a mix of content, tailored by algorithms (算法) to match users’ interests, whether it’s plants, sports, cats, or politics.
Kyle Chayka, a writer for The New Yorker, discusses this topic in his book, Filterworld. He explains that algorithms analyze user data to predict and influence what they will likely engage with. This means that instead of a simple, chronological feed, users encounter a dynamic stream, constantly adapting to their preferences. Chayka examines how these algorithmic recommendations control what we consume, from music and movies to food and travel destinations. He argues that this machine-driven selection process has turned us into passive consumers, making our preferences and tastes more similar.
Chayka points out that algorithms make us passive by always showing us content that we’re unlikely to click away from but won’t find too unexpected or challenging. This constant stream of recommendations reduces our exposure to diverse or challenging content, subtly shaping our preferences and behaviors.
Moreover, Chayka points out that algorithms also pressure content creators, like musicians and artists, to tailor their work to fit these digital platforms. For instance, musicians on Spotify or TikTok might focus on creating catchy hooks at the beginning of their songs to grab the listener’s attention.
Despite the strong presence of these algorithms, Chayka believes that regulation could reduce their influence. He suggests that if Meta, the parent company of Facebook, were required to separate its various services, like Instagram or WhatsApp, and make them compete with each other, it could give users more control and choice over their digital consumption.
In summary, the change from simple, time-ordered social. media posts to algorithm-driven content has a big impact on both the viewers and the creators, influencing what we see, hear, and even think. Chayka’s insights highlight the need for greater awareness and potentially more regulation in our increasingly digital world.
32.According to the text, how have social media platforms changed in the past ten years
A.They show posts in a time-based order.
B.They prioritize posts from friends and family.
C.They make adjustments to satisfy users’ needs.
D.They provide more content to meet different needs.
33.What does Kyle Chayka think of algorithmic recommendations
A.They make users more active consumers.
B.They shape users’ preferences and behaviors.
C.They reduce the influence of content creators.
D.They expose users to diverse and challenging content.
34.How do algorithms influence musicians’ work on digital platforms
A.By encouraging musicians to create longer songs.
B.By discouraging musicians from using catchy hooks.
C.By giving musicians more control and choice over their music.
D.By requiring musicians to create their work to fit the platforms.
35.What can be concluded from the text
A.Tech companies should have more departments.
B.Social media algorithms give content creators less opportunities.
C.Social media algorithms flatten our culture by making decisions for us.
D.Network platforms have increased the common recommendations for 10 years.

Ask anyone how they’re feeling these days and chances are that they’ll reply with some version of “exhausted”. We’re tired of operating amid uncertainty. We’re tired of balancing childcare with work. 36 They direct our focus to the most readily available information to help us make decisions quickly without properly considering all the variables.
The result is that we are wired to move toward things that make us feel good and away from things that make us feel uncomfortable. 37 They default (默认) to what feels “normal”. Those networks are so deep in our thinking that when we’re traveling a new and challenging path, our wheels default back to the worn-in grooves (凹槽). So, how do we do hard things when our brains are constantly telling us to avoid effort
38 A 2016 study found that when people are upset, they’re less likely to try to do hard
things. When they’re feeling upbeat, however, they’re more likely to take on the hard-but-essential tasks that ultimately make life better. One way we can get ourselves in the right mindset is to do what’s called “reappraisal”, in which we create a shift in our brains of how we perceive a task.
Moreover, we must give our brains the right amount of autonomy. When we have a choice, our brains often want to programme something easy. 39 Put it into a work context: Do I want to experiment with a new project management tool that might make things easier for my team next week, or do I want to stick with the same sheet that a former employee established that none of us feel great about anyway
40 But by understanding what’s going on in your brain, you can work toward accomplishing hard things and manage your fears better.
A.Tackle them when we’re in a good mood.
B.Doing things like hard work can seem abnormal.
C.Our brains label effort as bad because it’s hard work.
D.We should be creative and open-minded when doing tasks.
E.This is called mindset fault, the tendency to do right things.
F.When we feel like this, our brains want to save mental energy.
G.But we can reduce the response by challenging ourselves to be innovative.

A lesson from my sister
My elder sister was different. She was socially awkward. She could not look at people in the eye. She would mumble (嘟哝) to herself and repeat the words she had just said. The child psychologist had termed it as “Asperger Syndrome”.
She, however, was academically capable. Therefore, we attended the same primary school. Despite this, I never, ever admitted in public that she was my sister. There was one incident, however, that changed how I viewed my sister. It was the incident that changed me.
Being in primary six, about to graduate, the school had made it a must for everyone to perform. Due to my sister’s inability to work together with others, she had to do it individually.
“I’ll sing,” my sister told my parents confidently. Hearing that, I was completely shocked. How could my sister, who was socially awkward, sing in front of the school I knew so well that if this happened, she would surely embarrass me.
Silently I prayed I would not have to watch my sister disgrace herself. It is fine. No one knows she is your sister. I remember telling myself these exact lines as I sat in the hall, waiting for the performances to start.
The lights dimmed and the curtains parted to reveal the only solo — my sister. It took about a whole minute for her to speak out her name and class and by that time, whispers were heard in the audience. “Why is she taking so long ” People around me asked. I sat nervously in my seat, wishing I were somewhere else.

W: Any other details about the job
M: No, just the paid trips to Paris on top of the salary.
W: Well, let’s tell Lisa. She’ll be back tomorrow I expect.

【答案】17.A 18.B 19.C 20.B
A Study done in the United States found that the average child receives $ 3. 70 per tooth. often the story goes something like this: children put their lost teeth under a pillow and receive money in exchange. Today we will discuss some different aspects of the Tooth Fairy. In early European traditions a child’s lost tooth was buried. Families believed that this could save their child from a hard life in their next life. Vikings used to take their children’s lost teeth in battle for good luck and some people buried their teeth out of fear of witches. These were some earlier ideas that connected teeth with good luck. The current tale of a Tooth Fairy usually involves an animal. There are many different versions depending on culture and time. The most common theme is associated with a mouse or a rabbit, but others include cats , dogs , and even squirrels. The reasons for the different animals vary. For example, a mouse has been connected to the Tooth Fairy tale because its teeth continue to grow for the entire life. Regardless of the background of the Tooth Fairy, it provides great education for children to take care of their teeth. It also helps people pay attention to tooth care in a positive and fun way.

Its gentle, smiling face always reminds me that someone
loves me and is watching over me from above.
Our society seems to praise and admire those who come off as booming and brash

The sea level has risen by an average of 20 centimeters since the late 19th century, and the research by scientists studying the last 25 years of satellite data found that the ocean water is rising faster and faster.
Scientists
have noticed that there are more heavy rainfall events.

Chayka examines how these algorithmic recommendations control what we consume, from
music and movies to food and travel destinations.

38 A 2016 study found that when people are upset, they’re less likely to try to do hard things.
【答案】36.F 37.C 38.A 39.G 40.B
36.根据上文“Ask anyone how they’re feeling these days and chances are that they’ll reply with some version of “exhausted”. We’re tired of operating amid uncertainty. We’re tired of balancing childcare with work.(问任何人最近感觉如何,他们很可能会回答某种形式的“筋疲力尽”。我们厌倦了在不确定的情况下运作。我们厌倦了平衡照顾孩子和工作)”以及后文“They direct our focus to the most readily available information to help us make decisions quickly without properly considering all the variables.(它们将我们的注意力引导到最容易获得的信息上,以帮助我们快速做出决定,而无需适当地考虑所有变量)”可知,上文提到大脑有厌倦感,可推知本句承接上文,解释为什么会有这种感觉。
37.根据后文“They default (默认) to what feels “normal”. Those networks are so deep in our thinking that when we’re traveling a new and challenging path, our wheels default back to the worn-in grooves (凹槽). So, how do we do hard things when our brains are constantly telling us to avoid effort (他们默认感觉“正常”。这些网络在我们的思维中如此之深,以至于当我们走在一条新的、充满挑战的道路上时,我们的车轮默认回到了磨损的凹槽。那么,当我们的大脑不断告诉我们要避免努力时,我们如何去做困难的事情呢?)”可知,后文提到大脑会告知我们避免努力,本句说明原因。故C选项“我们的大脑认为努力是不好的,因为它是辛苦的工作”符合语境,故选C。
38.根据后文“A 2016 study found that when people are upset, they’re less likely to try to do hard things. When they’re feeling upbeat, however, they’re more likely to take on the hard-but-essential tasks that ultimately make life better. One way we can get ourselves in the right mindset is to do what’s called “reappraisal”, in which we create a shift in our brains of how we perceive a task.(2016年的一项研究发现,当人们感到沮丧时,他们不太可能尝试去做困难的事情。然而,当他们感到乐观时,他们更有可能
承担那些艰难但重要的任务,最终使生活变得更好。让自己进入正确心态的一种方法是做所谓的“重新评估”,在这个过程中,我们在大脑中创造一个我们如何看待任务的转变)”可知,后文的研究表明,在乐观的心态下更有可能承担那些艰难但重要的任务,最终使生活变得更好,说明要在积极的心态下去处理困难的任务。故A选项“当我们心情好的时候处理它们”符合语境,故选A。
39.根据上文“Moreover, we must give our brains the right amount of autonomy. When we have a choice, our brains often want to programme something easy.(此外,我们必须给我们的大脑适当的自主权。当我们有选择的时候,我们的大脑通常会选择一些简单的东西)”以及后文“Put it into a work context: Do I want to experiment with a new project management tool that might make things easier for my team next week, or do I want to stick with the same sheet that a former employee established that none of us feel great about anyway (把它放在工作环境中:我是想尝试一个新的项目管理工具,这可能会让我的团队下周的工作变得更容易,还是想坚持使用一个前员工建立的、我们都不太喜欢的表格?)”
40.根据后文“But by understanding what’s going on in your brain, you can work toward accomplishing hard things and manage your fears better.(但是通过了解你的大脑中发生了什么,你可以努力完成困难的事情,更好地管理你的恐惧)”可知,后文提到了解大脑可以让我们完成困难的事情,可知后文与本句为转折关系,推测本句是在说明完成困难的工作在大脑看来不太寻常。

in an effort to do sth意为“试图做某事”,故填to create。
分析句子结构可知,此处为谓语动词,由“in the second century B.C.”
根据语意,前后两个分句“Fireworks are wildly popular”与“they have been linked to air pollution increases”之间是转折关系,使用并列连词but或yet,故填but或yet。
分析句子结构可知,此处为非限制性定语从句,用关系代词which指代前文整个句子“Many of the chemicals in fireworks are also persistent in the environment”,故填which。

Paragraph 2
Guilt (内疚) and shame filled my heart as I listened to my sister’s wonderful singing.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1
Finally my sister started to sing. I was prepared for the worst. She opened her mouth, and I was shocked — she sang effortlessly and melodiously. Her voice rang naturally through the hall, beautiful in its power. I listened ever so carefully to the lyrics that she had composed all by herself and wondered — how did I not know that my sister could sing like an angel
Paragraph 2
Guilt (内疚) and shame filled my heart as I listened to my sister’s wonderful singing. I realized that I had been so wrong. She was socially awkward yet so gifted. How could I have doubted my sister’s abilities She taught me a lesson that I should not judge a person from just one perspective. Although she knew that I was embarrassed by her and was unwilling to attend her concert, she had never taken it to heart. It was then that I was determined to love her unconditionally and tell everybody that she was my sister.
